England
Andrew Strauss 9/10
Set up the England innings with a captain’s hundred and the decision not to
enforce the follow-on ensured that his side batted in favourable conditions
and left an impossible target
Alastair Cook 7
Came through a few nervous moments early on but helped Strauss to dominate Mitchell
Johnson on the first morning. Still needs to convert more fifties into
hundreds
Ravi Bopara 4
Slow tempo to his second innings showed his concerns. He may be better
suited to a lower position in the order, but remains in credit after West
Indies hundreds
Kevin Pietersen 5
Australia exploited a chink in the first innings with a full-length ball.
Only Pietersen will know the extent of his Achilles problem, which looks a
concern from afar
Paul Collingwood 7
An annoyed Strauss named him as the only England batsman to give his wicket
away in the first innings, though Collingwood injected momentum on Saturday
afternoon
Matthew Prior 6
Perfect man to come in second time around with quick runs needed, but was
bowled through the gate for the second time in the series in the first
innings. Keeping remains inconsistent
Andrew Flintoff 9
May have received a bit of help from umpires, but set the tone for England’s
bowling efforts on Sunday morning and then again today. A man on a mission
Stuart Broad 6
More useful in a lesser role as first-change bowler, allowing Flintoff to take
the new ball. Kept things tight for the most part to maintain pressure on
Australia
Graeme Swann 7
Gives Strauss an attacking spin option rather that the containing job of
Ashley Giles four years ago. Again turned the ball with a bit of guile in
variations of pace and flight
James Anderson 8
Australia never recovered after he took four top six wickets on Friday, though
surprisingly he was not the same force in the second innings
Graham Onions 5
Chipped in with three first-innings wickets, but was handicapped by an elbow
injury later in the game and may be vulnerable with Stephen Harmison
challenging for his place
Australia
Simon Katich 5
His dismissal in the first innings hooking when pretty well set was the
turning point in the game, setting Australia’s collapse in match-losing motion
Phil Hughes 3
The boy wonder again looked anything but as England again exploited
difficulties against the short ball. More important, Hughes knows that England
know his weakness
Ricky Ponting 4
Things could probably have gone worse for the Australia captain, but it is
hard to imagine how. England, the umpires and the crowd - everyone was
against him
Mike Hussey 5
Found a bit of form in the first innings before a dreadful misjudgment and
suffered a poor decision on Sunday that he accepted with commendable good
grace
Michael Clarke 9
Gave Australia a sniff of a chance with a light-footed innings of rare style
and timing; his cover driving will not be bettered all series
Marcus North 3
Followed his hundred at Cardiff with a pair of failures and his biggest
contribution was to fill in for a few overs of spin when Hauritz was off
receiving treatment
Brad Haddin 7
Spirited rearguard alongside Clarke on Sunday afternoon but culpable in the
first innings and kept wicket nervously on his first Test appearance at
Lord’s
Mitchell Johnson 3
As his left arm got lower so did his prospects of seeing out the series.
England have targeted him in the same way they looked to take on Jason
Gillespie in 2005
Nathan Hauritz 6
Responded bravely after dislocating a finger on the first day - it was
sustained dropping Strauss on 52, mind - and turned the ball in England’s
second innings
Peter Siddle 5
Bustling and wholehearted again, and deserved the bits and bobs that came his
way without looking as though he will run through the England batting during
the series
Ben Hilfenhaus 7
Again Australia’s best bowler, he kept things relatively tight on the first
morning and then exploited conditions when they were more favourable
