ANDREW STRAUSS 9
There was an enormous amount of responsibility on Strauss’s shoulders during
this series, but he bore the load like Atlas. Leading run-scorer on either
side and the natural leader of this England team.
ALASTAIR COOK 3
He is still only 24, but unfortunately his batting average matched his age in this series. Tucked into some wayward bowling at Lord’s, but otherwise endured a miserable five games, his weakness around off stump ruthlessly exploited.
IAN BELL 5
His first innings of 72 at the Oval was worth its weight in gold and will probably earn him another extended run at No3. Is he ready for the responsibility this time?
PAUL COLLINGWOOD 5
Averaged only 27, but his flinty presence alongside gentler souls extends his worth to the side beyond mere numbers. That gutsy match-saving innings at Cardiff could serve as a fitting epitaph to his Test career.
JONATHAN TROTT 9
It takes a special temperament to make such an impact he did on his Test debut at the Oval. Hats off to the selectors for placing their faith in him. How he follows that should be fascinating to watch.
MATT PRIOR 6
Some sparky contributions with the bat, he was England’s second-highest run-scorer, but some longer innings are required if he is to remain in the top six. An admirably consistent series with the gloves.
