UNLIKE his predecessor Michael Vaughan, England captain Andrew Strauss has no qualms about having Jonathan Trott in his team as they prepare to face South Africa.
Trott is one of four South African-born players in the squad — the others are Kevin Pietersen, Matt Prior and Strauss.
Vaughan’s criticism of Trott last week has put added pressure on the shoulders of the 28-year-old, who scored a century on his Test debut in the Ashes decider at The Oval this summer. The former England captain revealed in his autobiography that Trott, who was born in Cape Town, was spotted celebrating with South African players after they had beaten England at Edgbaston in 2008.
But Strauss dismisses any concerns over Trott’s loyalty. “I’m 100% happy with Trott’s commitment to England and have no concern over it whatsoever,” he said. “He said himself he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. He has a clear conscience on the matter.
“To uproot your life and start all over again in another country is a big decision and I’m sure he’ll make the most of the opportunity of playing for England.”
Strauss admitted that the England players expect a hostile reception but insists they will not be intimidated by it. He was speaking as his team prepared to fly out for a tour consisting of four Tests and five one-day internationals. Pietersen was abused upon his return to South Africa as an England player five years ago, and Trott faces a similar reaction this time.
Strauss has responded to critics of England’s selection policy by stating that his players’ birthplace is not important. “The selectors sit down and pick the best 15 England-qualified players,” he said. “The fact some of them have been born out of these shores is of no consequence. To make it to Test level you must show determination, desire and hunger. Kevin and Jonathan have that.
“They deserve to play for England. I’m happy that the 15 players I’ve got are 100% committed to England.”
The captain believes beating South Africa this winter presents a greater challenge than winning the Ashes this summer. “Playing South Africa, who are the number one team in the world, is the hardest assignment there is,” he said.
