It was perhaps inevitable that Adam Hollioake would play a decisive role against Surrey, his former county, who lost their first Twenty20 Cup match this season. Hollioake, who came in at No 7 during the fourteenth over with 51 needed, hit his first ball for four and turned the match with an innings of 21 off 12 balls.
Hollioake and James Foster, who played superbly for his 34-ball fifty, effectively settled the outcome with a sixth-wicket stand of 32 in three overs. Hollioake was severe on Nayan Doshi, clubbing him for a six as well as two leg-side fours in an over that cost 19. Surrey will wonder what might have been had Alistair Brown not dropped James Middlebrook at 159 for seven in the eighteenth over.
The Brown Caps were on course for a much bigger total when Mark Ramprakash and James Benning were thrashing the ball to all parts in a second-wicket stand of 103 in 12 overs. Each faced 48 balls and each hit three sixes as well as sharing 15 fours. Ramprakash, who finished with 74 not out, was in consummate form, driving Martin Saggers on two occasions back over his head for six.
Michael Powell, the Glamorgan batsman, is in intensive care after an operation to remove a rib. The 30-year-old had surgery to relieve pressure on an artery that had caused a blood clot. Glamorgan hope that he will be moved on to a ward today at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital despite requiring a further three operations because of complications.
