Geraint Jones made his highest score in limited-overs cricket, 86 off 88 balls, and Kent's seam bowlers skittled Surrey as the visiting team eased to their second Bank Holiday weekend win.
At 52 for four, Kent were in trouble on a Brit Oval pitch offering a little extra pace, but their lower-order batting and superior bowling allowed them to prosper.
Both sides struggled against the new ball, but after stumbling, Kent consolidated, then flew, with Jones and Azhar Mahmood thumping 84 off the last six overs. Justin Kemp followed his match-winning, unbeaten 68 on Sunday by steadying the ship. He drove with typical muscularity and put on 92 in 20 overs with Jones. But the first time he unleashed, he holed out to long-on off Chris Schofield.
Jones began cautiously, working singles and playing the angles but increasingly looked like the batsman so admired by Duncan Fletcher, the former England head coach. He moved to his first one-day fifty for Kent since May 2005, off 62 balls and gradually cut loose before he was caught behind off an inside edge when Pedro Collins returned in the 47th over to unsettle him with a mixture of pace and high full tosses. His stand of 93 in ten overs with Azhar turned the game.
Azhar, who joined Kent this season after spending the previous six at Surrey, enjoyed himself against his former county. He drove Jade Dernbach straight over his head for the first six of the innings and he cut a six over point off Matt Nicholson to bring up a 38-ball fifty. Azhar showed his all-round worth when he backed up the pacy Yasir Arafat by rushing Mark Ramprakash, who played on to to his leg stump. Arafat had removed both openers and Alistair Brown was hurried into a back-foot drive and went to a good catch one-handed in front of slip from Jones.
Ryan McLaren, Kent's South African Kolpak player, provided no let-up for Surrey and his pace and bounce reduced them to 84 for six in the 21st over. Jonathan Batty gave Surrey the faintest hope, but that was almost gone by the time he edged McLaren to deep gully in the 40th over.
