Kevin O’Brien smashed a huge six to seal Ireland’s first win in the Friend’s Provident Trophy, and their first one-day win at home for four years, at Stormont last night.

Warwickshire’s total of 211 for seven off their 50 overs looked inadequate after Reinhardt Strydom’s opening assault and William Porterfield’s more measured approach to anchor the innings.

But after Strydom fell leg-before to Maddy, having scored 35 out of an opening partnership of 49, Ireland lost impetus. Porterfield remained assured but wickets fell steadily at the other end. Porterfield was the last wicket to fall after a patient 69, and in the end, O’Brien’s cameo of 23, including two sixes, saw Ireland home with 20 balls to spare.

Warwickshire’s innings began slowly and fell apart at 96 for five after 28 overs, but Frost and Powell guided them to respectability.
