Attend an evening with Andre Agassi

Explosive hitting by the Surrey top order, with James Benning again the initial aggressor, provided much-needed vibrancy on a grey, cheerless day and also proved decisive - leaving Essex still requiring one point for Friends Provident Trophy quarter-final qualification. Benning scored 38 from 22 balls, adding 58 with Scott Newman who went on to complete a 41-ball fifty after losing his opening partner in the seventh over.
There were no sixes in the Essex innings, following a late start, though Varun Chopra did stroke nine sumptuous boundaries before holing out for 79. Benning, however, had muscled three sixes inside six overs, while Newman also swept James Middlebrook's off spin out of the ground over mid-wicket to bring up Surrey's 100 in the 14th over.
Graham Napier's second ball of the Surrey innings, following an opening wide, disappeared over the wide long-on boundary and Benning then hit the next ball for four. Napier was pulled for a second six in his next over and Benning took Surrey racing past 50 when he swung Middlebrook for six to long on in the sixth over.
When Benning was bowled, aiming another violent blow, Mark Butcher also began brightly - lofting David Masters straight for four - while Newman accelerated to complete his half-century as the second-wicket stand realised 52 in nine overs.
Essex captain Mark Pettini used six different bowlers during the first 15 overs, as he tried in vain to stem the run flow, but Usman Afzaal joined Butcher to ease Surrey to victory with 22 balls to spare. They added an unbroken 109 for the third wicket and both left-handers passed fifty.
Afzaal has 328 runs in the competition at an average of 65.60, while Butcher has an aggregate of 281 at 56.20. With Benning and Newman also well past the 200-run tally, it is surprising that Surrey's chances of a quarter-final spot remain merely mathematical.
With Pedro Collins rested, the three selected senior seamers all bowled well during an Essex innings featuring too many loose strokes. Matthew Spriegel, the 21-year-old Loughborough UCCE captain, marked his debut in the competition with eight tidy overs of off breaks.
So gloomy was it after the morning rain, however, that the Chelmsford floodlights remained on all day and only a few hundred hardy spectators made the effort to attend.
