With low bounce at one end and sharp lift at the other, batting was a precarious business. As Michael Vaughan, the England Test captain and Paul Collingwood, the one-day captain, have opted not to play in the Friends Provident Trophy semi-finals on Friday and Saturday, the second innings here offers the last chance of a decent bat before the Test series that starts on Thursday week.
Collingwood, having been banned from playing for England on Saturday took three wickets in six balls on a rain-affected day to hasten the end of Yorkshire's innings. But his grim week came to a miserable end when, three overs before the close, he perished to an uncharacteristically rash stroke at Adil Rashid, the leg-spinner. Having played himself in carefully for 41 minutes, Collingwood failed to get to the pitch and skied a catch to Matthew Hoggard. He will await the announcement of the Test squad on Thursday with some anxiety.
Vaughan seems to find run-scoring harder in county cricket. He took 18 balls over his duck, nicking a fine ball from Callum Thorp that bounced and left him before departing with an accusing glare at the pitch.
Liam Plunkett bowled erratically in his first championship game of the season, but swung the ball enough to take three wickets, while Stephen Harmison, exploiting the steep bounce, threatened sporadically.
Quick to exact revenge, Hoggard had Michael Di Venuto leg-before with his second ball and Yorkshire have little time to waste today if they are to stay in this game.
