James Taylor and Sam Cliff, part of a new Leicestershire generation, marked their third one-day appearance by helping the Foxes to their first NatWest Pro40 second divison win in six attempts this season. The Phantoms were all out for 177 in response to 183 for eight, despite Chris Rogers scoring 61, with seven fours from 85 balls and Tom New, on loan from Leicestershire, making 36 not out off 40 balls.
A damp pitch turned batting into a challenging occupation but Taylor, 18, struck a resourceful 43 not out, with two fours and two sixes, off 42 balls, in his first innings in the competition. He swiftly justified the Foxes' decision to recruit him from Worcestershire during a year in which he was a member of the England Under-19 World Cup squad.
Cliff, 20, also Nottingham-born, shared the opening attack with Dillon du Preez and took three for three with his first 23 balls before John Sadler and Rogers, former Leicestershire batsmen, uplifted the Phantoms with a fourth-wicket partnership of 68 in 13 overs.
Cliff added the wicket of Graham Wagg with the first ball of his second spell. Joel Pope, 19, standing up to the wicket dismissed him with a reflex catch as the Phantoms crucially lost three wickets for five runs in two overs.
Oddly, Derbyshire not only chose to use seven bowlers but opted to employ the languid medium pace of Wavell Hinds at the end of the innings, the last five overs yielding 48 runs and the final two producing 23 with Taylor in full flow. He was among six England qualified players aged 23 or less in the Foxes' team with an average age of 24. Pope, deputising for Paul Nixon, who has a calf muscle injury, previously played for Middlesex, signed for the Foxes at the end of last season and pulled off the slick stumping of Dan Redfern, who was aiming to sweep.
Other batsmen suffered sundry misadventures, including Rikki Clarke, who was bowled off bat and pad first ball by Cliff. Clarke had earlier run out Claude Henderson with a direct hit from long on and been deprived of a wicket when du Preez was dropped second ball by Rogers at first slip. Du Preez went on to add 52 in 11 overs with Taylor but Rogers, himself, went on to become the only half-century maker in the match before being the second of Pope's three victims.
