Alistair Brown, one of the most devastating strokemakers the game has known, is to be released by Surrey at the end of the season. He has played only seven first-class matches this season and has not appeared in the county championship since Surrey played Kent at the Brit Oval in June.

Brown, 38, who is attracting at least two other counties, has scored 14,957 first-class runs at 43.35 with 44 centuries but he is more renowned for his exploits in the one-day game.

He has scored 10,833 runs at 31.76 in List A matches with 19 hundreds and 49 fifties and hit a world record one-day score of 268 in a C&G Trophy match against Glamorgan at the Brit Oval in 2002.

Surrey were put in to bat when this match finally got under way 15 minutes late on the second day but Scott Newman and Chris Murtagh had to survive only 13 balls in 10 minutes before the rain set in again.
