ADAM HOLLIOAKE, who has made such a selfless and valuable contribution to the success that Surrey have enjoyed over the past eight years, made his final appearance for the county under the floodlights at Old Trafford last night.

It was never going to be the most joyous of occasions because the Lions’ fate was already sealed and they will play in the second division next year. Hollioake was denied the satisfaction even of a winning farewell, Lancashire Lightning’s victory ensuring them the runners-up position and prize-money of £27,000.

Hollioake will remember the ovations that he was given by the Lancashire followers, but, that apart, it was not a match he will remember with any great pride. His three overs cost 27 runs and his batting ended on a faintly embarrassing note when he gave the left-arm spin of Gary Keedy the charge, was beaten through the air and off the pitch and was stumped for 12.
