SCARBOROUGH
(Day one of four, Yorkshire won toss)
Somerset 160-3 (A Suppiah 58 not out, J Hildreth 29 not out; A Rashid 2-21)
Lunch
On an overcast day and damp ground, Yorkshire were presumably hoping that their seam attack would make inroads, but in fact Adil Rashid’s leg-spin has given them the better of the first session, boosting their battle against relegation.
Matthew Hoggard took a solitary wicket for the seamers when he had Marcus Trescothick caught behind from the first ball of the day, but Justin Langer then cruised comfortably to reach his half-century from 71 balls.
Shortly afterwards, however, he attemped to hit Rashid out of the ground and succeeded only in skying a catch to point. Zander de Bruyn followed in Rashid’s next over, leg-before sweeping, and Yorkshire went to lunch with a spring in their step.
Tea
In a session that was twice interrupted by bad light, Yorkshire missed opportunities to take a grip on the game. James Hildreth has been reprieved three times on his way to 29. Twice in three balls, on nine and 13, he was missed by Richard Pyrah at slip off Deon Kruis, neither of them straightforward, but both catchable. When he had reached 26, he was stranded yards down the pitch against Adil Rashid, only for Gerard Brophy to squander the stumping chance.
At the other end, Arul Suppiah has moved calmly to his half-century from 112 balls, setting Somerset on the road to recovery before the players took an early tea.
