SURREY gained a useful lead on a slow, low turning pitch thanks to Nayan Doshi, who claimed his first five-wicket haul for his county. He did not spin the ball as much as Gary Keedy, but he varied his flight and angle of attack much more than his Lancashire counterpart.

Doshi removed Iain Sutcliffe with his second ball, lured Stuart Law into a loose drive, and beat Carl Hooper in the flight. But for a sixth-wicket stand of 114 in 24 overs between Chris Schofield and Glen Chapple, Lancashire would have had no chance of gaining the victory they need to avoid relegation. The partnership helped them to two valuable batting points.
