EDGBASTON
(Day two of four: Glamorgan won toss)
Warwickshire 315 (TR Ambrose 86, N Carter 63, JO Troughton 54, AJ Shantry 5 for 77) and 55 for 3 (T Frost 29 not out); Glamorgan 193 (JWM Dalrymple 92, RDB Croft 33, CR Woakes 6 for 68).
Lunch
It took Warwickshire only 80 minutes to pick up the two points they needed to claim the second division title amid a flurry of runs from Neil Carter, the hard-hitting left-hander, and wickets from Chris Woakes, the 18-year-old seamer who has made such a big impression in his first championship season.
Carter struck the first four balls of Jason Gillespie’s first over to the boundary to move from 47 to 63 off 59 balls with a six and 12 fours and then edged the fifth ball tamely to slip. Tim Ambrose was caught behind off Adam Shantry without adding to his overnight 86 but Woakes and Boyd Rankin secured a third batting point before Shantry bowled Woakes to complete his first five-wicket haul in the championship.
Woakes then made sure that the first bowling point was not long in coming. He took three for six in 16 balls, having Gareth Rees caught at point and Michael Powell at first slip and bowling Tom Maynard in between.
The title was theirs but Warwickshire wanted to celebrate with their first home win in the championship since April last year.and they were well on the way when Glamorgan lost three more wickets before lunch.
Tea
Glamorgan’s batting had been so inept that they were facing the prospect of defeat inside two days when they resumed needing 113 to avoid the follow-on with only four wickets left but Jamie Dalrymple and Robert Croft had other ideas.
Dalrymple went past 50 off 66 balls with nine fours and Croft joined him in a partnership of 106 in 26 overs, a record for Glamorgan’s seventh wicket against Warwickshire at Edgbaston..
Croft, who was reprieved on 11 when he was given out lbw to Carter but then recalled by the umpire, had reached 33 when he dragged a ball from Jonathan Trott into his stumps. Jason Gillespie got out to a poor shot in Trott’s next over but David Harrison gave Dalrymple the support he needed to save the follow-on.
Harrison then hooked Woakes to long leg and Dalrymple, eight runs away from a deserved century, drove him to long off to give the teenager career-best figures of six for 68.
Close
Warwickshire had a lead of 122 when they went in again but they had not added to it when Jason Gillespie had Darren Maddy caught at second slip for a duck off his second ball.
Gillespie, the former Australia fast bowler who is almost certainly playing his last game in county cricket at the age of 33, rolled back the years in an impressive opening spell but it was Adam Shantry and David Harrison who struck two further blows.
Shantry removed Navdeep Poonia and Harrison claimed Jonathan Trott, both lbw, but Tony Frost was still there when bad light ended play with Warwickshire 177 ahead with seven wickets in hand.
