EDGBASTON
(Day three of four: Glamorgan won toss)
Warwickshire 315 (TR Ambrose 86, N Carter 63, JO Troughton 54, AJ Shantry 5 for 77) and 280 (R Clarke 81, T Frost 62, Carter 51, Shantry 5 for 52); Glamorgan 193 (JWM Dalrymple 92, RDB Croft 33, CR Woakes 6 for 68) and 122 for 1 (GP Rees 54 not out, DLHemp 44) .
Lunch
Tony Frost, the wicketkeeper-batsman who retired at the end of the 2006 season to take a job on the Edgbaston groundstaff but was persuaded to play again this year when Tim Ambrose was called up by England, passed 1,000 runs for the first time in 11 seasons of county cricket as Warwickshire struggled to live up to their status as second division champions..
Frost, now playing as a specialist batsman, needed to add 30 to his overnight 29 to reach the milestone when play resumed half an hour late because of morning mist and he had just got there when he became the third of three victims in successive overs for Adam Shantry.
Shantry had both Jim Troughton and Tim Ambrose caught behind and then trapped Frost lbw after he had made 62 off 112 balls with seven fours to leave Warwickshire only 227 runs ahead with four wickets in hand before Neil Carter and Rikki Clarke began to reassert their authority.
Tea
Glamorgan’s hopes of embarrassing the champions with a fourth victory of the season were all but extinguished as Clarke and Carter took their seventh wicket partnership to 112 in 36 overs.
Clarke, who scored 81 against Warwickshire when he was captaining Derbyshire earlier in the season, reached only his second championship fifty of the summer off 109 balls with seven fours.
Carter had made 51 off 106 balls with a six and six fours when he pulled Ryan Watkins into the hands of Gareth Rees at deep square leg but Clarke was still there on 70 at tea when Warwickshire were 368 ahead with three wickets in hand.
Close
Clarke had matched the 81 he made for Derbyshire against Warwickshire when he was caught behind off David Harrison, who went on to take his 200th first-class wicket when Chris Woakes was caught at point.
Ian Salisbury was then caught on the cover boundary to give Shantry his second five-wicket haul and career-best match figures of 10 for 129, leaving Glamorgan needing an improbable 403 to win.
David Hemp, probably playing his last match, put a brave face on it by scoring a brisk 44 before he was caught behind off Boyd Rankin and Gareth Rees finished unbeaten on 54 as Glamorgan reached 122 for one.
