2 for 1 at Pizza Express
SURREY owed victory to three of their younger players, who combined to inflict Durham’s first league defeat of the season. From a sickly 26 for four in the seventh over, the home team recovered to post a challenging 219 from 38 overs after a record stand for the county against Durham in this competition, 129 in 22 overs, between James Benning (66 off 84 balls) and Rikki Clarke (54 off 67).
Durham’s pursuit of their target was undermined by an outstanding opening spell from Tim Murtagh, who took three wickets in his first three overs without conceding a run. Nathan Astle and Paul Collingwood paid the penalty for playing across the line. Earlier, Murtagh had crashed an unbeaten 31 off 21 balls, his best score in one-day cricket.
Nicky Peng, with 63 off 70 balls, and Dale Benkenstein, with 44 off 61, threatened to take Durham close with a fourth-wicket partnership of 95. Both then fell to Ian Salisbury, whose skilful variation brought him three wickets in 15 balls and settled the outcome.
