After a day of brilliant sunshine, gloom descended on Yorkshire. Opting to bowl first, they ended up batting in poor light and were all but dismissed for 90. Earlier, news had emerged that Matthew Hoggard, the former England seam bowler, and Ajmal Shahzad, the off spinner, are likely to leave the county, having been targeted by Worcestershire.

Jacques Rudolph, acting captain after Anthony McGrath suffered whiplash in a car accident at the weekend, made the decision to insert, which for some time looked a reasonable one. Only his opening bowlers' six wides and a no-ball in the initial overs briefly threatened his plan, as did David Warner.

Durham's new signing from New South Wales gave a first sight of his talents to the home crowd, having made a rapid fifty at Derby the previous night.

Warner's three boundaries in his 19 may have been a modest number, but they were more than anyone else achieved. The left-hander, a small man, resembled an agile bantamweight boxer as he manoeuvred the ball with a punchy dexterity before lifting a ball to mid-wicket.

Thereafter, all of Durham struggled to the apparently inadequate total of 131. But Yorkshire began their reply disastrously, two early run-outs leaving them four for three. Only Michael Vaughan promised some runs.

The former England captain played some handsome drives until, on 16, inexplicably half-driving a ball to mid-off. He looked disbelieving as he departed with the scoreboard showing 30 for six. There was no recovery, Adil Rashid's undefeated 28 being entertaining but essentially bluster.
