WHEN he last played against Glamorgan, Rana Naved-ul-Hasan, with some assistance from Mushtaq Ahmed, bowled them out for 96. His one genuinely quick spell yesterday was still more telling. In 26 balls he took five wickets for five runs, a portent, perhaps, of what to expect when Pakistan arrive later this summer.
Naved’s wickets were those of Mark Cosgrove, who top-edged a rising ball, Alex Wharf and Nicky Peng leg-before, Michael Powell caught behind aiming to drive, and Mark Wallace, who left the ball in the expectation that it would bounce over the stumps. In fact it hit the top of middle. England, watch out.
Glamorgan were 78 for seven at one point and, although they recovered to some extent, with Richard Grant striking 36 and the tailenders chipping in, they were still well beaten. There had been no obvious reason for putting Sussex in on a pitch adjacent to one earmarked for the inaugural Test match here in 2009, although initially the tactic seemed sound.
The Sussex innings was notable for Michael Yardy reaching a half-century with a six, no fours and 21 successive singles. He finished with 88 off 120 balls with only two fours, putting on 127 with Carl Hopkinson. Murray Goodwin also made runs, 44 in all, which was a necessity given that Matt Prior went for a duck and Sussex had lost their first three wickets for 43.
Naved struck a straight six in the last over of the innings, took off his pads and then determined the outcome. He finished with five for 30 as Sussex gained their third victory in three matches.
