Steve McClaren, the England manager, admits he has been "given a problem" by David Beckham's return to form.
The 31-year-old former England captain has forced his way back into Real Madrid's first team and has produced a string of fine performances. Beckham set up two goals as Real won a thrilling Champions League last sixteen first-leg clash against Bayern Munich last night.
"It gives me a problem, one of the problems you welcome," McClaren said. "He's being professional and performing well for his club - obviously that's a problem I would rather have than not have. It's interesting."
Beckham appeared set for months on the sidelines after Fabio Capello, the coach, claimed he would never play for the club again following his decision to join the Los Angeles Galaxy this summer. But McClaren added: "The reaction from every adversity he's ever gone through in his career, he's always bounced back and been professional and got on with his job.
"It's pleasing to see that a month ago he would never play for Real Madrid again and there he is starring in a game against Bayern Munich and being man of the match."
Beckham's upturn in form has led to a clamour for his recall to the national side, which he captained until their exit from last summer's World Cup, and the midfielder still hopes to represent his country again.
"My ambition has never changed since the age of 13, even younger," Beckham said. "I always wanted to play for my country and I will always be available whether I'm in Spain for the next four months, or whether I'm in LA," Beckham, who has 94 caps, said.
McClaren insisted he had no plans to speak to Beckham ahead of the Euro 2008 qualifiers in Israel and Andorra, but the England coach has said in the past that he would never close the door on any player.

Is Beckham's career coming to a close? If you ask him he would probably say otherwise...but i ain't sure. It seems england is loosing intrest of having him on the team...is he over?we gotta wait and see....
john, buf., .
Yeah i think that Becks must be recalled to the England squad again..Because he is now in his top performance..i seems this to his form in 1999 when he was in MANU..We will wait and see that what can England do in the groups without Becks..But i hope that he can be number 7 again in England...

Don't understand why the great British public give the Beckhams such a hard time. He's done more for Britain than the Beatles and why are people so unkind to Victoria, what has she ever done to hurt anyone? We seem to have become a nation of jealous, snide sheep - please, think for yourselves...yes, Victoria hasn't churned out the best songs but quite frankly nor have Elton John or Westlife and we seem to tolerate them. If she has an eating disorder like much of the gutter press alude to then shouldn't she have our sympathy? and if David did ever sleep with...Oh was this supposed to be about football? in that case yes, he should be on the England squad, should never have been taken off, the performance in work cup was parlous but he is not alone in responsiblity for that, I cringed every time Lampard got near the ball and somehow David Beckham seems to bring about a sense of calm and confidence in the team, plus he is drop dead gorgeous thus increasing viewing figures among the ladies
Julia, Hertfordshire,
beckham while in form should be straight back into the england squad. it sends out a message that is needed in the squad that in form players are chosen before reputation.
whilst young players do need to be bled into the national team to gain experience for tournements, qualification must be achieved first.
Beckham has made past tournements possible, and should be a short term solution. Steve McClaren has to embrace the next four months of his stay in Madrid, it is in both thier interests, although McClaren's interest is maybe more poinient, as he could become the next graham Taylor.
David, Manchester, UK
he are supposed to go back to england and represent his country if he loves it
lee, lc, china
of course! so far mclaren has proved to be little more than an infintely less successful version of sven goran ericsson. Can't anyone motivate this talented group of individuals and get them to perform together as a cohsive unit? And back them up with the technical strategy and game plan that each opponent merits. I wonder!!!
David Borg, St Julian`s, MALTA
Beckham should never be in this spot. Why would anyone in their right mind think he was past his prime or not good enough anymore? He's still the best free kick taker and can make everyone on the team better. Letting him go in the first place was a huge error.
Alex, London, UK
I would give Beckham a recall simply because he plays with pride and he is as good if not better than the rubbish that Mclaren is selecting.
alan canning, St.Helens, Merseyside
i agree with everything you say bill with one exception (i'll come to that)..beckham has been an outstanding example to his country, his team and a whole generation. as for maclaren he is a second rate 2-bit manager who tried to sensationalise by dropping beckham and now shows his complete lack of leadership by failing to choose between gerrard and lampard (steve, ever wondered why england got nowhere with shilton and clements popping up like glove puppets every other match?...make yer mind up and settle your squad)..oh yes bill, the exception? CROUCH..is he called called CROUCH cos that's what he does when, perish the thought, there's a defender actually between him and the goal?..in the absence of owen to work with rooney i'd rather have dolly the sheep up front to collect from becks...and she's dead
thomas, london, UK
Beckham has conducted himself as a true professional at Real and Capello has been the main beneficiary. England has no right side without Pennant, and even with Pennant, has no efficiency in crosses, corners or free kicks. With all the criticism of the world cup team, it was Beckham that single handedly defeated Ecuador. I think McClaren could do a lot worse than with Beckham as an option for the right side (and he has done a lot worse!).
Eduardo Pierce, Atlanta, USA
Would to see Becks return to the England squad. C'mon, McClaren...make it happen!
jonathan g. beasley, boston, united states/massachusetts
I regret Beckham's joining LA Galaxy. In my opinion he is one of the best players that have joined Real Madrid in the former years. I like his behaviour in the field and out of the field. He deserves England Team.
JUAN JOSE BLANCO, Madrid, Spain
I feel sorry for Beckham. He's the victim of McLarens' need to break from the Ericksson era. McLaren got the job because of a rush decision b4 the World Cup. Why was it necessary to choose a coach b4 the World Cup finished? The media frenzy around that issue and Rooney cost England, it was not Beckham's fault they didn't make the grade. He deserves on his form to be in the squad, no one can take a free kick like him on the England team.
Vijay Maharaj, London, U.K.
Lampard and Gerrard in central midfield do not work; Using Beckham with one of them could, especially for away matches. He could keep the game ticking over while his range of passing could be useful if England want to play counter-attacking football. The unfortunate thing is what other choices do we have in central midfield? I think Beckham could do a short-term job and help us qualify for Euro 2008; lets hope by them we've solved our long-term central midfield problem.
MartinT, London,
Yes why not?? Why people are so narrow minded or better to say so jealous of his success???
He is worthy of every credit he receives every penny he earns. What is wrong with earning more money? He plays well. He helps other less fortunate people. He is proud of being British and proud of being chosen to play for his country. Still is not enough for some narrow-minded people??
What is wrong with us?? I am a normal citizen. Living in this country for 23 years. I am working hard to have a fairly comfortable retirements life. Why not him or any one else??
The only reason that David or any one else should not play for the British football team must be based on their abilities or lack of abilities and nothing else.

If England manager does not select him is our lose not David Beckham

Steve MacLaren has already shown himself to be a rather limited journeyman. Sadly he has the most important job in English football. Everyone could see that his decision to drop Beckham from the squad entirely was simply pandering to a fickle press pack- he was trying to win them over by following their opinion.
Beckham didn't have a great World Cup, but he was our only potent goal threat. He played some part in our few goals. He's still matchless with a dead ball. He's lost some pace, can't really beat people one-on-one and doesn't track back enough for me. However, his passing can be sublime. Would we have fared worse against Spain if he had been playing? I don't think so. I would play either Gerrard or Lampard, and have Beckham in the middle. Lennon or Wright-Phillips should be on the wing. Beckham could feed Crouch inch-perfect passes all day...
Bill, Bedford,
Bring him back, England's results and performances have been below ordinary since he left, worse than those at the World Cup. He's definately shown his maturity with his current situation and maybe his experience is something that is needed in the England team at the moment. Lennon and Wright-Phillips are for the future, ideal at the moment for the last twenty minutes if called upon. Get Becks back and we may even see Posh gracing the stands of Old Trafford again or maybe even Wembley!!
Geoff, Melbourne, Australia
england will never win anything whilst beckam wears an england shirt I said this ten years ago
paul corrigan, bsm, france
It was a travesty that Beckham was dropped from the national team in the first place - he has always been able to set up other players, and has proven that he can put the ball into the net as well as anyone. Its only pathetic politics that have prevented him fom being chosen and those responsible should be ashamed of themselves.
Samuel, Sheffield, UK
Steve McClaren should learn from Capello and get Beckham back immediately.
Let's do the math. He has been the only player in England who has scored in every World Cup so far. His depth and breadth of football games are unrivalled among all the England players, and imagine the fact that McClaren declared, " I have no plan for Beckham in England squad "
Every player from England should learn from his immense patience and perseverance (especially Wayne Rooney) eventhough he has been under heavy criticism from his coach Fabio Capello.... He has never felt frustrated and upset when he had the recall from Capello and inspired Real to victory! Bravo!
Chong Beng Lim, Kedah, Malaysia
No, David Beckham has already shown that money and image are more important to him than playing real football by signing up for a mickey mouse club in a league that is essentially a retirement home for footballers. If he was serious about football and playing for England again he would have returned to play in the premiership. England must now look to the future not the past.
J W Randall, Edinburgh,
Of course he should. Steve McClaren should use every decent player at his disposal for victory in the game.
Margaret, Tallow, Ireland
even though i live in l.a. and can't wait to see beckham play here. i would love to see him play for england again,
verna cornelius, los angeles, california
Of course he should we have missed him, come on David, show Steve what he is missing.
Parker, Hereford, UK
Not a chance. He's well past his prime.
Merrrill Overturf, Vienna, Austria
David Beckham has great character and he has proven it time and again. he achieves what he does by hard work and perseverance. These are just the qualities we need in the England side. These are the qualities that will inspire younger players in the team. These are the qualities we want to see in every England player. An on form Beckham allied to Lennon and Hargreaves in mid-field would provide a powerful hub around which to build a successful team.
Peter Hellyer, Horsham, England
the decision to remove beckham was ill advised from the starts. leaving england a team searching for someone to fill a gap, something none of the men supposed to make england a world beating team as they have billed themselves. gerrrard, lampard, rooney..? to drop beckham from the team as a result of the world cup was bizarre, the contribution of the other 'class' midfeilders, gerrard and lampard was minimal if even positive.
Ewan Ross, St Andrews, Scotland
Beckham is more deserving than mcClaren for an england post.. He is a good rather than great player but gives 100% and is better than most in the a very ordinary side. In our division rating terms the England side vis-a vis world would be mid Championship. But then that also applies to most of our clubs who do not travel well. Take Man u who with three injuries would find it hard to be a big threat to any prem. side. Equally Arsenal never travel. Wake up every one and smell the Bacon!
kemp, bromley, u.k.
Get him back for any position except goalkeeper.
Kat, Chichester, UK
Being a rugby player I don't care for football and especially non of the razzmatazz that goes with it - on or off the fields.
But I do like David Beckham. He really is a star; and when you read about so called "celebrities" behaving quite disgracefully, going into rehab clinics on a swing door basis, Beckham becomes even more surprisingly refreshing - the Jonny Wilkenson of football, and that's quite a compliment!
PS. He should be back in the England squad. I may watch it.
Robbie Rohan, Great Chart, Kent, UK
No. A couple of good but meaningless freak results means nothing. Beckham is yesterday's news and it is better that younger players who are more interested in how they play than how they look should be swiftly moved up the ranks.
Mikko Takala, Drumnadrochit, Inverness-shire
He's better than the inconsistent Frank Lampard. He plays in centre midfield for Real Madrid and isn't wasted in the inside right position that Eriksson put him in.
Dan Bonera, London,
ya we want that hero back and let england be into euro 2oo8
tesfalem amanuel, norway,
Yes.
R Lancaster, London, UK
It goes without question that David Beckham has the finest right foot in the country. Beckham may not have the pace of Wright Phillips, but he has the experience and leadership to change the result of any game. We have seen that recently at Madrid. Scoring, setting up goals, and taking free kicks. He could of easily given up and turned the other cheek, instead, he put his head down and got on with the job at hand, that alone is creditworthy and shows his true colours. Beckham is a play maker, much like Gerrard, and would slot into any team very easily. He may be a superstar in the world, but on the field he is a very different person. I was very surprised initially when he was not chosen for his country, and I am not surprised that he is being considered once again. Teddy Sheringham was told he was past it when he went to Portsmouth, but he averaged 12 goals a season and still does the job. Give Beckham the chance, he has earnt it.
Keith James Gallier, Newtown, Powys Mid Wales
McClaren needs to pick his best side for every game and currently that would have to include David Beckham.
Brian Riddell, Chalfont St Peter, Bucks

J W Randall, Edinburgh,
Yes even if as a bench player, why get rid of someone before they are ready for it if they are playing well enough to be in the national side.?Beckam is only 31 so certainly could play for 2 more years and if he is performing then bring him in! How old was Zidane in the last world cup for France? The coach must pick on form and not reputation so if a player with a reputation is in from does that mean not pick him! With his expereince he would be a great squad player and add experience when needed. Even from the states he could do a job for England as he certainly will be fresh!
