CHELSEA won the first FA Cup final at the new Wembley yesterday, denying Manchester United the classic league and cup Double in a dramatic extra-time finish. Didier Drogba settled it with his 33rd goal of the season after 116 minutes. Just as it seemed a poor match was going to go to penalties, Drogba exchanged passes with Frank Lampard and lifted the ball over Edwin van der Sar to set the new stadium reverberating to the strains of Blue is the Colour.
After an extended build-up that went on for four hours, the final was a major disappointment in terms of the quality of its football. The best two teams in the country they may be, but neither played up to their potential and as a spectacle it was one of the poorest finals in recent memory, rivalling Arsenal’s tedious smash and grab at United’s expense two years ago.
Chelsea celebrated with more style than they played, although Drogba had to charge off the pitch at the end in pursuit of Jose Mourinho who, bizarrely, raced down the tunnel at the final whistle. When he was persuaded to reappear, he climbed the 107 steps to the new Royal Box signalling six with his fingers to the blue-clad fans. This was a typically extravagant reference to the half-dozen trophies he has won in his three years at Stamford Bridge.
Roman Abramovich, the employer with whom the manager has had a strained relationship this season, saluted this latest achievement along with the rest of Chelsea’s capering following, but it remains to be seen whether he is satisfied with an FA and Carling Cup double. His preference, and Mourinho’s, would have been the Premiership and European Cup. United are left with “only” the league title, but Sir Alex Ferguson has declared himself happy enough with that - for now.
Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech admitted the ball had crossed his goalline when he was challenged by Ryan Giggs during the first period of extra time. Giggs forced him over when he had the ball in his grasp, but referee Steve Bennett waved play on. “It was behind the line,” Cech said, “but it would have been a foul anyway.”
Cech also felt winning the cup was some consolation after the disappointment in Europe and the Premiership title race. “I’ve heard a lot about the FA Cup and this feeling is amazing,” he said. “We lost a semi-final [Champions League] on penalties and we lost the Premiership at the last moment so this cup is a real achievement.”
Mourinho - who said he ran down the tunnel to phone his children, who could not be at Wembley - said his players deserved the cup and added: “The victory is for them and for the supporters.”
Ferguson felt fatigue was a key factor in his side’s defeat. “There was nothing between the two teams - neither deserved to lose or win and it is disappointing we have lost,” he said.

It was a terrible game that will be remembered for the non event as apose to the result. Lots of comments around the players but the worst participant was the referee. He was in the way, grandstanding and was guilty of missing so much. Granted he is a man and it was a big day but could he have got more in the way, at one point he was so close to the players that he changed the tempo of the game, he was as useful as a PM on a multiplex project. 120 minuetes saw one bit of class which resulted in a Chelsea win. I am red and it was a shambles from the minuete they walked out.

So Amir thinks that bundling a goalkeeper over the line when he has both hands on the ball is legitimate? More sour grapes! I thought most Man Un fans were from the west country - well I suppose SF is west of Manchester!

Wonder what will happen when Putin or his successor tells Abramovitch to send the cash back to Russia.

So what if the neutrals and media did not think it was a good game. The game should be for the supporters of the teams involved who couldnt care less as long as their team one won and lifted the cup. If the hangers on dont like it give their tickets to the fans who missed out in future. I was there I spent money on expensive pies and drink I was lucky the result was good for myself and my mates. I feel sorry for Man utd fans but there could be only one winner. As for the other 40000 who should not have been there anyway and the football family who the FA pretend to represent, who is bothered?
Phil F, Fleet, UK
I don't understand why the press are not outraged that Man Utd actually won the FA Cup but were not awarded a goal. Yes the ball crossed the line, everyone saw it but nothiing is being done about it.
Surely we must have video replays in football like in Rugby to stop these attrocities happening again and making a farce out of a great game.
Seems the referee had it against Man Utd from the start.

more run of the mill stuff from the best-hyped and over priced league in the world. Not a patch on the contest between the two Spanish clubs in midweek, that not many English viewers woud have bothered to watch.Roll on the Scottish final on Saturday.

This FA final football is at its highest tactical managerial vision set by the great Mourinho, if you want entertainment please head to the west end theatre and leave football alone.

Not "beautiful" by Man U. and Arsenal standards perhaps, but a work of sublime genius by Mourinho and his team. They kept Ronaldo where he is the least dangerous; out on the wing and under pressure. In those conditions, he could only manage the occasional hurried cross. Even if he had dived (which, to his credit, he didn't) the resultant free kick would have bee from a relatively harmless location. Without Ronaldo, United are a much easier team to deal with. Chelsea's strategy kept them in firm control of most of the game, and it was played the way they wanted to play it. As for Gigg's "goal", even in the laissez-faire days of the forties or fifties, when you could bundle the goalie over the line with a shoulder charge, that goal would have been disallowed. I know; I was there!

Rezwan. Get your facts right. Don't kid yourself. It was never a legitimate goal. As was blatantly obvious from the replays, Giggs momentum pushed Cech over the line. The referee knew this and played advantage to Chelsea instead of signalling a foul against Giggs.
Cech admitted that it went over the line, but he also said that Giggs fouled him, thus a goal should not be awarded.
Giggs was ranting and raving, claiming a goal in order to deflect attention away from the fact that he muffed a point blank opportunity in front of goal.

"I am 45 and cannot remember a more forgetful FA Cup Final. Scrappy would be an appropriate description."
Khalid, you cannot have seen many cup finals in your 45 years...............
I thought it was a great game from a tactical perspective, not unlike a game of chess between two evenly matched opponents who know each others strenghts and weaknesses? Or am I being too cerebral? Maybe I should join the masses and pine for 20 headless chickens running around for 90 minutes.
sonny, london,
Thank you, Jose!!!! Thank you guys!!!! Its great to have a blue heart today.
As for the future, Roman Abramovich - thank you for making it all financially possible. And, please, have fewer layers of hangers on between the manager and yourself. That will solve the few real and the many imaginary problems.
Let Jose work. Communicate!!!
Peter Scott, Budapest, Hungary
BTW it is an oxy moron to discuss whether it was an all time forgetable cup final....

Chelsea won deservedly because of their resilience and team work and because, once, their "big players" showed a moment of class. United's "big" players, with the possible exception of Rooney, didn't show up. Scholes was anonymous apart from the now mandatory lunge, Giggs was poor to the extent that he had to mask the miss of the match by claiming as a legitimate goal taking the goalkeeper over the line by (accidentally) putting his knee in his face and his studs in his vitals. And then there was Ronaldo - better than Best, better even than Pele. What "theatre of dreams" garbage! Anonymous in the extreme yesterday and yet to have a good game against anything other than average opposition. And 50000 genuine fans paid through the nose for their tickets, their burgers, their drinks and their programmes. No new age dawned yesterday, just another inglorious episode in the exploitation of football fans by an FA which should respect and protect them.

Ferguson outwitted by Mourinho.
You'd have thought that United would play their normal game, but despite his great success, Ferguson has never been a great tactician. I couldn't believe it when he picked a team to nullify Chelsea.
It looked like Man U were playing for pens here & that's a disappointment.
Simon Porch, London, UK
What a poor game. I can't agree with the "dramatic" finish - I'd lost interest way before Drogba scored. Neither side deserved to win. Fatigue was certainly a factor but I think the major issue was a feeling felt by both teams that the FA Cup is far poorer relation these days to the Premership and Champions League. Let's just hope we can have two non-"big four" teams in the final next year to give the cup the excitement it deserves.
Tim Jones, Wimbledon, UK
Congratulations to Chelsea. It was a very even game and we always knew that the team which got the breaks would win. Unfortunately for us, Bennett decided that he did not wan to give us a legitimate goal. I just want to say how much I appreciate Cech's honesty in admitting that the ball had crossed the line. We might have lost the cup but in football there are wins and losses but Cech's honesty is something which you don't see often.
Rezwan, Manchester,
I saw the game last night. It was not a fantastic game. But it has a special meaning to the both teams. In fact, Man United did a good job during the whole game except for a second mistake. I really doubt with the sustitutions in the extra-time which was decided by the Red's coach. The Red controlled the situations entirely,we can see Rooney run all around, even Giggs, who is almost in his retired age. Another player,Schols, really played well. He played as the soul of the Red's, which I really admired him as my favorite hero Zidane. But unfortunately,Man lost the game due to the dramatic happening. In my opinion, the most unsuccessful action for Red is the coach's wrong substitution. Anyway, I hope the Man United will be more and more successful in the next season.
John, Shanghai, China
Once again Sir Alex showed his inability to change the tactics when the opponents stop United playing at their normal high tempo. Rooney is sacrificed to play up front with his back to goal and yet when on the few occasions he was able to face the goal we saw him dribble pass Chelsea defenders. He was the only player to create. When will he be given a free role instead of Ronaldo who flatters to decieve at the highest level.
Chelsea played it perfectly if not very entertaining.
Arthur Brocklebank, Liverpool, England
The Carling cup, FA cup, second in the top league and semi-finalists in the Champions league.
Hard to criticise for a Villa fan.
David Postle, London,
It is good for the Chelsea players not to finish a season, with high hopes and expectations, empty handed as they have worked ever so hard. with Essien, Kalou, and Mikel they have young and etremely talented and hard working stars, showing a bright future ahead. But in the light of the unpredented level of investment FA cup is not any consolation at all by any measure. So JM should stop being a little bit childish and perhaps disourteous towards the owner by showing six fingures symbolising six cups. The more you look at this man the more one feels that he has an attitude. Why does he not learn from Sir Alex, Wenger, Benitez some hmulity? The owner will be justified to sack him still and there are managers who can do better with Chelsea's resources.
