AC Milan have beaten Liverpool 2-1 in the Champions League final to avenge their defeat to Rafael Benitez's side at the same stage of the competition two years ago.
Liverpool outplayed their opponents in the first half but fell behind on 45 minutes when Andrea Pirlo's free-kick from 25 yards ricocheted against the back of Filippo Inzaghe and beyond Jose Reina in the Liverpool goal.
Steven Gerrard, the Liverpool captain, was positive in defeat, insisting that his side would return again to the showpiece of European club football's premier competition.
He said: "Let's not forget we were playing a top side with top players. We dominated things in the first half, but never really did so in the second.

"We have to get this out of our system. We need to bring in some quality and we'll go again next year. We'll play in this final again, I'm very confident of that. We're going places. You only have to look at our support to realise that."
Liverpool repeatedly stretched the Milan defence In the opening period, creating half a dozen good opportunities to their opponents' none.
Rafael Benitez's tactics, it seemed, had paid impressive dividend. Playing between a five-man midfield and Dirk Kuyt in attack, Steven Gerrard had thrived in a role supposedly better suited to the more subtle skills of his opposite number, Kaka.
Twice in the opening 25 minutes, Jermaine Pennant found the Liverpool captain in space on the edge of the Milan penalty area. On the first occasion, the winger's overhit pass evaded Gerrard; on the second, the midfielder hit his shot high into the sky.
Shepherded well by Javier Mascherano, Kaka showed only glimpses of his skill, beating John-Arne Riise with a double drag-back on 24 minutes and connecting sweetly with a driven shot from 25 yards that Reina saved comfortably.
Those moments provided the highlights for Milan, who had started to rely a little too frequently on the seasoned defensive skills of Alessandro Nesta and Paolo Maldini at centre half.
Liverpool's superiority appeared to frustrate Gennaro Gattuso, who was booked after two sycthing challenges, first on Boudewijn Zenden and then Xabi Alonso.

It looks like another merry go round at Anfield, a few in a few out shake it all about. Is it rotation or indecisiveness that shape Benitez's team selection ? judging by his transfer dealings I would suggest the latter, what was the Robbie Fowler transfer about ? a palyer past his prime at Leeds never mind M.City ?? And now Bellamy is being hawked around alongside another dozen or so.
Does Benitez flatter to deceive ? The jury is out here, 4th place wont be enough next season, certainly not with the same point gap.

not too long ago this would have been a EUFA final as neither team are Champions.
2-0 down and Benitez swaps one sub fo another and doesnt bring on a second striker unttil its too late.
I still think that Liverpool are the most vulnerable of the top 4 teams in the Premiership.

A mediocre match that proved just how silly the "champions" league has become. Between a Liverpool team that has never even remotely looked like being champions in the last 10 years, and a Milan team fighting for third place in Italian league without Juventus.
Both have been erratic and it was the poor version that turned up last night. Liverpool were played true to thier real form - well organised and disciplined, but utterly lacking a cutting edge. Milan had some inspired moments but were nothing like the side that played against Manchester United, and seem to treat the ball like a hot potato they had to get rid of as soon as possible.
Time to put this competition on a diet...
Nick, France,
Silvio Berlusconi calims twice before the games aginst Man United and Liverpool that "La victoria e sigura" and football has to stand by that. We have heard of "Red Communists" before, however, if football is indeed a game of ball/s shouldn't it be immpossible to predict? No wonder he's a media tycoon. Soon those green fields might become sand fields.

Very striking from these comments what a charmless, graceless bunch the Chelsea supporters are. Why are they slagging off Liverpool? No other English team's supporters have. I know some Chelsea supporters and they don't behave like this. I understand it's not necessarily a majority view, but these comments really don't do your club many favours.
Bickering aside, I thought Liverpool put in as much effort as they could last night but Rafa got the tactics wrong. Why put on two wingers (three if you count Kewell) and have nobody in the middle? Playing Gerrard as a quasi striker is not his best role he needs the ball in front of him not behind him. He gets over-anxious when he's expected to score and doesn't link as well with strikers as another striker would.
Rafa has shown himself to be a great tactician before, but this time I think he got it wrong. AC's first goal was a bit lucky but because they are so skilful they could control the game from then on. That goal won the game.

I am a FIORENTINA supporter, and I must say Liverpool is a Great Team, and I respect the way they play, the players and the Coach.
But yesterday, Milan deserved the Victory, keeping in mind all they had to go thru in the past year.
My best wishes to Liverpool for the year to come, BUT:
FORZA MILAN

Poor old Ozzie Steve. He's a bit confused. The £450 million is what the new owners will be paying for Liverpool FC but that does, of course, include a new stadium at £250 million. Doh!
Mike, Manama, Bahrain
liverpool never had a chance with milan's expierience.the final in 2005 was won by luck and both coach and players lied to the fans when they told them that they had a chance.milan is milan .if we want to win we have to have a good team with good football players as gerrard said in his comments.

Celtic gave Milan a harder fight than any of the two sides from the vastly over-rated and hyped up EPL.

A great football game took place last night in Athens! Both of the teams were magnificent... However, Milan prooved to be a little bit better and finally won!!! Congratulations also to the greek organisators for this beautiful night! Everything worked good! Greetings from Patras, Greece

I warned you:
I said you'd come back... walking alone...
well, there you have it!!
Defeated within the 90 minutes - no penalty chances this time: that's the difference between a great team and THE Great Team.
7 kisses for all Reds' chicks..

apart from players, i think that this time ancelotti had been smarter than benitez. milan got bad luck in istanbul, this time luck gave them back what they fully deserved in 2005.
filippo, ceccano,
Kaka is the best, but Paolo Maldini is the greatest! In his 8th CL-final he played a fantastic match, leaving no space to Liverpool´s strikers, and led all the defensive line to the deserved triumph. In his career he has won 5 CL titles. He is the more successful player in the past 20 years... GRAZIE PAOLO! Two "old men" - Paolo and Pippo - have beaten a young team from Liverpool, that was simply not enough good tonight. It can be said, Milan is the gravedigger of english teams... However from all, Liverpool is on the best way to win the CL in the next future.

Viva AC Milan, the world salute Milan for their superior football skills, especially the times they performed their "Milan trademark" of passing the ball in the air, with panache, amongst themselves. Whilst Gerrard struggled on the pitch, why Couch wasn't there from the beginning? I think Liverpool fans (including this Arsenal fan) want some serious explanation from Benitez.
Costanzia, La la land,
Chelsea would have done much better.Liverpoool were are a disgrace.
OGUTU, Geneva, SWITZERLAND
Adding the final of Istanbul and Athens, Milan and Liverpool played for 210 minutes of football. Never Liverpool was ahead of Milan. Either behind in score or, at the most, equalizing.
But, hats off, Liverpool would have won any other team in the Champions League.
They shouldn't be in any competition where Champions are mentioned?
Two titans clubs, adding 12 Champions League titles among them (not to mention the titles), were exactly where they deserved to be: at the top of the world football !!!
Serafino, Tokyo, Japan
So Parry reckons 500-million to win a League Cup (actually Two Premierships, two League Cups and an FA Cup) is pretty expensive?
How about 450-million to win nothing more than a penalty shoot-out?
But wait: we'd better add Benitez transfer activity to that plus the 40-million Benitez is going to spend this summer...Hmnnnn ....strike me down with a father duster! Liverpool has been spending substantially more than Abramovic in an endeavour to, er, buy the League.....without actually getting any closer to completing the purchase.
Oh, the annoyance of arithmetic - or may be they don't teach maths in Lancashire primary schools?

A good game overall - Liverpool didn't seem as hungry as Milan for European glory, and this was ultimately reflected in the final score...
Adam, Southampton,
A typical Milan performance in Europe. They never had to get out of second gear and when they had the opportunities they took them.
Liverpool took the game to them in the first half, and crdeit to them, holding the midfield and possesion, but created little. You almost knew what was coming.
By time an hour had gone, and Liverpool had faded there was only going to be one winner.
An ordinary final with a poor Milan side compared to their past and a team who have been distant fourth in the EPL and really should not be in any competition where the word Champion is mentioned.
D.Gray, Bournemouth,
Thanks Milan! Liverpool speaks, Milan wins!
Dani, Florence, Italy
Let's mention to the whole world that you'd be changing half your squad before the big game - is this what a man manager and motivator would do? This is one thing Benitez needs to learn from Mourinho
Derek, Hong Kong,

Milan were a little lucky with the 1st goal and overall, Liverpool took the match to the Italians. Luck tends to even out over a long period. Just as Milan were unlikely to lose the CL in 2005 after leading 3-0, they were a bit luckier this time to win 2-1.
Rafa inexplicably put Crouch out too late, when he would have troubled the Italians with his aerial power. In any case, I always felt Milan had it in them to win, whether with or without luck.
English football has a long way to go, in terms of basic techniques like ball control, dribbling, short passes and shooting. Just like Man U, who lacked a world class striker, Liverpool's Dirk Kyut was not good enough. The difference between the two this morning was Super Pippo!
Jeffrey Ong, Singapore, Singapore
Congrats to milan. However if that's the great Italian football i have been having shoved own my throat all week, you can keep it

aj, london,
Sell Harry Kewell.
How he managed to make no appreciable improvement on Zenden´s poor first half is beyond me.
How can someone who hasn´t had too many chances due to injury waste such a good opportunity to at least show he has a little hunger for the game.
Maybe he´s a Libra like Viduka.
Bad luck to Liverpool though.
P R Cottage, Barcelona,
I like to think of myself as quite intelligent but what the heck is Dr MIBarton on about!? I think it is clear where the clever drug use is!
Come on the Reds.

I'm a Chelsea supporter but right behind Milan today. C'mon Milan - thrash the Red Scousers!

I was in Milan in 2005 and I watched one of the best matches ever. But this time is going to be different and, as an Italian who lives in London, I have to say FORZA MILAN....ALLA GRANDE!
Valentina, London,
Dear Dr MIBarton, Oxford, UK . I can' t understand a word you've said. If you are a doctor i hope to god (whichever one) you' re not on the NHS.
In any case have ourselves a team of humble beginnings playing nothing less than their seventh european cup final. It takes some beating considering they've never had the might of many others moneywise. Good luck to them tonight!

jason, gifu,
Going to love it if I see the kitten touching old big ears on the way out tonight - he didn't respect it last time. Milan are hell bent on revenge and I fancy Crouch to come off the bench and score for a 1-0 after a cagey 80 mins....

Laura, New york,
Liverpool so Budhist it is polytheist monastic so the EU giving enhancement withclever drug use.
Decay of Protestants is so obvious it is acrime against all sense. Liverpool have been a bias against Great Creator and good human mind and not as good as European soccer says.
