DAVID BECKHAM marked his return to the England squad with a man-of-the-match performance in Real Madrid’s 3-1 home victory over Deportivo la Coruña last night.
The midfielder had a hand in two goals as his side retained their position at the top of La Liga. After 29 minutes his left-footed cross was met by Ruud van Nistelrooy whose header was saved but knocked in by Sergio Ramos. In the second half Beckham’s cross was headed in by Raul to give Madrid a decisive lead. Beckham was believed to have left the Bernabeu quickly last night in order to fly by private jet to London.
Madrid’s title rivals Barcelona, who are level on points but trail by virtue of the clubs’ head-to-head record, won 1-0 at home to Getafe, but their Brazilian forward Ronaldinho was sent off and will be suspended for the final two games of the season.
Van Nistelrooy reported afterwards that Beckham had been overjoyed at his recall by Steve McClaren, the England coach. “He’s delighted, so happy with the news,” said the Dutch striker.
“We’d been talking about it every day leading up to the squad announcement, saying ‘Hey, Becks, two more days’ then ‘One more day’.
“David has been through everything in the game and he was still so happy to be called up for his country. Only the greats have an attitude like that.”
Earlier McClaren admitted that he had not attended any of Beckham’s recent games before selecting him for the squad for the friendly against Brazil at Wembley on Friday and the Euro 2008 qualifier against Estonia in 10 days’ time. “I had planned to go to see him but circumstances prevailed against it. I know what he can do. I’ve watched every game he has played, on tape and on television.”
He denied that there was any measure of panic in his squad selection.
England must win in Tallinn after defeat by Croatia and draws against Israel and Macedonia left them fourth in Group E. “It is certainly not a panic measure,” said McClaren. “I always like to plan long term, but there is a pressing short-term need to win in Estonia, and David can help us to do that.” The coach also said that he stood by his initial decision to dump Beckham. “I wouldn’t go back on that decision,” he said. “But as I told you at the time, you should never close the door on anybody.”
For his part, Beckham suggested that his game might improve after his move to Los Angeles Galaxy in the summer. “The US season is shorter– we only play 30 games a year – so we get more time off. I’ll be a lot fitter,” he said in an interview with Radio 5 Live. McClaren’s gamble, pages 14-15

Should Beckham play? Yes. He's hardly disrupting a winning streak.

Against Portugal in the last World Cup, England looked balanced going forward and solid at the back with Beckham at right-back and Lennon on the right wing, after Neville left the field injured. I think this is the best way to use Beckham for England in the final phase of his career. A player of his talent can see the whole game from this position, Lennon needs a mentor on the pitch at this level and revelled in his partnership with Beckham down the right against Portugal. England don't have a Beckham problem, we have a Lampard problem; an extended loss of form for Frank should be dealt with now, we should drop him and and give him the shake up he needs. Some players, turning up knowing they are picked for England, do not respond in the required manner and I think Lampard may be one of those who can slip into complacency. There is plenty of young midfield talent capable of dealing with the stern challenge Estonia may represent, like Bentley. So put Becks at right back, Steve!

Why not, it's not as if we seem able to take a game to opponents, so the back up of a dead ball specialist is worthwhile.
gerry, scarborough,
Beckham is a quality player who has proven his ability time and time again. Everyone who has watched any football over the past 10 years knows Becks is never more dangerous than when he's got a mission. After France '98 he was hated and almost forced to retire but he didn't. Instead he played some of the most effective and impressive football I've ever seen. Capello basically made his life hell this season but yet again Beckham has risen to the considerable challenge and now Madrid clearly wish he was staying. Say what you want about him... he can't dribble, he can't head etc. So what? Cristiano Ronaldo is an incredible dribbler of the ball but can he produce from dead ball situations like Becks can? Doubtful, certainly not as consistently. Aaron Lennon is supposed to be Becks' replacement. But can he whip crosses in first time with Beckham accuracy? No, not yet anyway. Beckham's form for Madrid deserves a recall, and a starting place in the team.

David Beckham is an exceptional player. He's been absolutely great for both England and world football. I reckon his experience, determination, motivation and full committment will be extremely vital to the important Euro 2008 game versus Estonia. England needs that wealth of experience at the moment and the team lacks that sort of drive and determination at the moment. Beckham will, and has always, been able to provide that. I'm sure he'll be able to stir up the team for motivation and a will to win so that England can secure a safe and successful passage towards the Euro 2008 cup.
Ismail Shah, Wembley, England
David Beckham is set to play infinitely better and more consistently for England second time around, scoring goals from open play as well as from free kicks. This is not a matter of opinion. It is dictated by the ' macro ' circumstances of Beckham's return to the England team.
In psychological terms, Beckham has nothing to lose and everything to gain. He knows he has one last chance which, if he seizes it, will mean his inclusion in all of the forthcoming Euro 2008 qualifyers and, possibly, the European Championship Finals themselves.
Beckham is not the England captain anymore and can therefore concentrate on his own performance. His fewer games for Real Madrid this season mean that he is fit and fresh, mentally as well as physically.
Christiano Ronaldo faced a similar moment of truth at the start of the EPL season just ended. So did Didier Drogba with Shevchenko's arrival. Both focused their efforts as never before in game after game. So will David Beckham.

What is the point in bringing Beckham back??
We have seen the best of him and life will continue without Beckham!!He is not the be all and end all of the England side now and we have to do without him.Yes i know McClaren has put him in the side for his big match experience, but we need all round players and not just a bunch of individuals. The Brazil match will be a nice way for him to say a proper goodbye to the England fans and that will be all.
Mr D G Roberts, Derby,
i think he has to be given a chance seeing his rcent performances for Real
also he could provide the stability that the England team badly needs at this moment
so yes no problem lets see how he clicks..

ever since david beckham left old trafford in 2003 for real madrid he has undoubtedly been their most consistent performer, along with Iker Casillas. His talent, commitment and heart can never be questioned and having seen practically every game he has played for club and country throughout his career I think its ridiculous that anyone is questioning his return to the squad. Granted, he didnt have the best of world cups but neither did most of the England team...should they all be dropped?? People who have never even seen a La Liga match are probably the ones getting on Beck's back, I think the doubters should lay off him for once and enjoy their egg-less faces while they can!
Jai Amin, London, England
What a suprise! i thought he booted (excuse the pun) beckham out to move the team forward & start a new chapter in englands football history, clearly his plan isnt working & he cant even stick to his guns - i could understand it if beckham was something other than a marketing brand now but he isnt, still a good player yes but there are better around, if we cant function without him its about time to give up. Then again if we dont qualify his time maybe up anyways.
Martin, Blackpool,
If it was any other English player being called up to the squad for upcoming international matches as a short term solution to strenghten a temporarily weakened right hand side, nobody would bat an eyelid. All Beckham has done to warrant attention in this supposed "controversial" decision is have a handful of bad games in an England shirt. The fact that the same can be said about all the other England midfielders doesn't help me to understand what the big fuss is about. He's a good player. He played poorly before, he was dropped. He has played good for his club. The England squad need another right midfielder. He has been recalled. GET OVER IT.
David, Glasgow, Scotland
The media have done a complete u-turn on Beckham. Remember the headlines after the World Cup?
So it seems a bit unfair to accuse McLaren of panicking. Whatever his faults as a manager, recalling Beckham is a brave decision that shows he doesn't let pride get in the way of his job.
