Fabio Quagliarella is waiting for Manchester United to make their move for him. The Sampdoria striker has been targeted by Sir Alex Ferguson in a £10 million deal. No formal offer has been made as of yet, but Inter Milan and Juventus are also interested.
Meanwhile Preston North End have confirmed they have given two clubs permission to speak to striker David Nugent. Sunderland believe they are close to signing him in a £7m deal. West Ham United or Everton are thought to be the other team in talks with the England under-21 forward.
Portsmouth's hopes of signing Lyon's Alou Diarra have suffered a setback. It is now being reported that the midfielder is considering a switch to French side Bordeaux instead of heading to the Premiership.
Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Fredi Kanoute could be on his way back to England. Newcastle United, Portsmouth and Bolton Wanderers are all keen on signing him following a successful term with Seville.
Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez is ready to increase his offer for West Ham midfielder Yossi Benayoun. The Israel international will not be offered a new five-year contract at Upton Park as expected, and Liverpool will try to sign him for £4.5m.
The Reds interest in Atletico Madrid striker Fernando Torres is expected to be dropped however, as the Spanish side are demanding a fee of £27m. Liverpool goalkeeper Scott Carson is being targeted by Aston Villa, who are considering a £3.5m bid.
Newcastle are in pole position to sign Manchester United forward Alan Smith. Smith has not been offered a new deal to extend his stay at Old Trafford and Sam Allardyce hopes to land him in a deal worth £3.5m. Allardyce has also been targeting Paris St Germain defender David Rozehnal, and the Czech Republic international has warned Newcastle they have one week left to complete a deal.
Middlesbrough completed the signing of Tuncay Sanli on Friday afternoon, with the Turkey international midfielder, 25, completing a free transfer move from Fenerbahce by signing a four-year deal, subject to gaining a work permit.
“I am very happy to be here and to sign for Middlesbrough, he said. "I have heard a lot about the club and have seen the team many times on television.
“Ever since I was a young boy, I have wanted to play in the English Premier League and I know that Middlesbrough are one of the most influential teams in the top division, so I am excited about this chance."
Newcastle are still keen on Charlton Athletic's Luke Young. Bolton and Aston Villa are also keeping an eye on the £3m rated defender, though.
Bolton are reportedly ready to step up their interest in Djibril Cisse. The Marseille forward is being monitored by Sammy Lee, and it is believed Bolton will make a £6m offer.
Rumours over Darren Bent's future continue to circulate. Tottenham are preparing a new bid of £16m for the Charlton striker.
West Ham's Carlos Tevez could be on his way to Spain. Real Madrid believe they are in the driving seat to capture his signature.
Fulham are believed to be on the verge of signing Reading midfielder Seol Ki-Hyeon for £1m. They are also trying to tie up deals with Mido from Tottenham and Diomansy Kamara from West Bromwich Albion.

rafa is a clever negotiator and shrewd spender. that is important for a great manager. that won't change with rich owners. benayoun is standby if garcia becomes part of the torres deal. rafa's tactic to get the price down is for the player to publicly admit he wants to go to lfc. if anyone can rafa can. keep the faith.
manoj, london ,
Patience is a virtue people, plenty of time before the season starts and we only need to make slight adjustments to get them up to the level of Chelski and the other team. Would be happy with Torres and a left winger who can cross. Have faith, is this not the time of year for a bit of optimism?
Dave, Carlisle, England
I dont understand why we (Liverpool) can't afford Torres at £27m, sell Bellamy (£10m), Cisse (£6m) and we are already half way there.
Then if u add the proceeds from gonzalez (sp?) and offer garcia in switch (or even sell) then we shud easily be there!
Even if we didnt, dnt tell me that the Americans (Nicks/Gillet) cant afford £11m!
Kunal, London,
What the hell is Benitez doing. We dont need another midfilder. A winger at most. We need a #1 stricker that puts fear in the defenders he's about to take on. A LB would be nice so Risse can play LM so atleast we have an offensive force on the left side.

what is all the fuss about. The spanish season finished last week so your Etoos, Torres, Villa's, Silva's etc are all on hols. Liverpool squad is a good squad lacking just a few of the RIGHT players. Yes these players are probably the big names that are we all know but these type of players dont come cheap and often negotiations are lengthy so just give it some time. Although I am unsure of Benayoun as a Liverpool player...
PS: Remember our owners are quoted as multimillionaires not billionaires
Stefan Morris, Wton, UK
The annual Liverpool to win the league hype started early this year with empty promises from Benitez regarding additions to the playing staff. Liverpool fans must realise that the huge debt incurred with the acquisition of the club will lead to a minimum of £21 million being paid to the new owners every year just to service this. That means low level buys again (Benayoun anyone). Would you honestly let Benitez spend real money anyway with his track record of profligacy in the transfer market. Good news for Arsenal though as you and they battle it out for 3rd place again.
Sean , Newcastle,
i think that liverpool should invest way more money into the transfer market with a fee round about 55million going towards new aquireissions to help strenghthen the teams fight for premiership sucess
james jemson, Poulton Le Fylde, United Kingdom
Rafa will walk away if this keeps up,the americans are all talk and no trousers so far.Very like the valencia situation that brought him to anfield.Angry red
killian, Kildare,
I was under the impression that Liverpool brought in new owners so we could challenge for the Premiership and to do that we need to challenge at the top end of the transfer market. The lack of activity following Rafa's comments earlier in the summer should worry all Liverpool fans. I don't believe we can catch the likes of Man Ure and Chelski without a significant £50m investment in the team. For me that's three top class players for the first team. Is Torres the right man, I don't know, but I would trust Rafa's judgement or risk losing him. Which would mean the start of yet another five year plan with, in all likelyhood, an inferier manager leading us. Why go through the pain of losing a GREAT Chairman only to seemingly be in the same situation in the transfer market !
Glenn, Brighton, England
I can't imagine Liverpool having both Benayoun and Garcia in their squad - they surely have a deal lined up for Luis Garcia also if they are really going for the Israeli.
Patrick Treacy, Cork, Ireland
Liverpool will only sign Benayoun it seems.
