RAFAEL BENITEZ, the Liverpool manager, has stepped up his bid to throw down a marker in the Premiership by signing Atletico Madrid forward Fernando Torres after further discussions today between the two clubs.
Benitez has challenged new owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks to flex their financial muscles by paying the £27m release clause to sign Torres.
The 23-year-old is understood to be Benitez’s top target this summer as he attempts to finally transform Liverpool into title contenders and talks are at an advanced stage.
A bid has still not been forthcoming but, crucially, Torres - who is currently on holiday - is keen to work with Benitez and could be set to make his way to the Premiership, after being linked with moves to the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea for the past 18 months.
The only complication is that Torres is entitled to 10% of the fee, which Liverpool want knocked off the asking price.
Fulham have signed Aston Villa midfielder Aaron Hughes for £1 million. The 27-year-old Northern Ireland skipper is reunited with former boss Lawrie Sanchez and has signed a three year deal
No manager in the top flight appears to be busier than Roy Keane at Sunderland and Aberdeen captain Russell Andersen has completed a £1m move to the Stadium of Light.
Andersen has agreed to end an 11-year spell at Aberdeen after holding talks with Keane earlier today. Keane, however, can expect a negative response from West Bromwich Albion chairman Jeremy Peace over his ambitious bid to sign defenders Paul McShane and Paul Robinson.
North East rivals Newcastle are closing in on Chelsea defender Geremi, who is available on a free transfer.
Aston Villa expect to finally announce the signing of England under-21 international Nigel Reo-Coker for around £8m in the next 48 hours after holding further talks today. Villa face competition from Portsmouth for another of their targets, West Ham forward Marlon Harewood.
Andy Van der Meyde looks destined for the Goodison Park exit at Everton after admitting in a television interview that he is ready to move on over a lack of first team opportunities.
Carlos Tevez looks set to finally leave West Ham after being quoted as saying that he wants a move to Inter Milan.
Tevez has been courted by the Premiership’s top four this summer but favours to a move to Inter as there are eight of his fellow Argentines in the squad.
Birmingham City should finally complete the protracted £2.75m transfer of Lokomotiv Moscow forward Garry O’Connor later today.
O’Connor was due to undergo a medical at Birmingham’s training ground on Wednesday morning and should become Steve Bruce’s third signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Fabrice Muamba and Stuart Parnaby.
Bruce is also hopeful of signing Juventus midfielder Olivier Kapo on a season-long loan, while Arsenal defenders Mathieu Flamini and Johan Djourou are also both targets. Celta Vigo winger Daniel De Ridder could also move in a £2.5m deal.
Wigan have finally secured the £300,000 capture of Carlo Nash, the Preston North End goalkeeper, heading off late interest from Derby County.

Torres is the missing piece of the jigsaw for liverpools goal drought. He is young, fast, good in the air, and a good finisher. He wants to move to Liverpool because we are a attractive club to foreigners because of two champions league final in 3 years and every1 is basically spanish so he would fit in perfectly.
Gus w., barnes,
I believe that more than any thing Liverpool needs acreative midfielder (not merely an enthusiastic and hard working one). One who can turn the game round with one stroke of brilliance. This will help Torres and Crouch get in the goals. That midfielder is Youssi Benayoun or Mikel Arteta; they will come cheap. The coach also needs to show more faith in Crouch, he can get 20 league goals with more playing time. Sambrosa is also a must buy. Pennant sees too much of the ball but his passing is not precise. Liverpool needs a better option on the right of midfield.

there is no doubt torres is the kind of "world class" striker that liverpool need, but i think we could be putting all our eggs in one basket with this one,if it was to go pear shaped would we have any money left to replace him?we have been burnt over strikers who have been successful elsewhere but come up short when they donned the famous red shirt.....diouf,cisse and morientes all spring to mind.i would much rather play safe and go for a proven premiership striker like berbatov or anelka or for the right price maybe even owen!! the last two would probably cost 9-12 million which would leave about 10million in case they didnt succeed.

Manutd have been chasing Torres for the past several months. But now it seems Liverpool are receiving the jackpot. The unwitting problem underlying is that there will too much competition for place in the Liverpool squad. They are fraught with talented players but only 11 can be in Benitez's game plan at a time. Liverpool shoudn't be meticulous in landing the explosive striker at Anfield as Torres is undoubtedly one among the world-class strikers, with plentiful pace and flamboyant movement. He has a beanpole physique and is undisputabe in pace and finishing.
With Henry gone, Arsenal might be a bit quivery this year and there is a staunch chance for Liverpool to be a doughty contender and a serious title-challenger. They musn't squander the opportunity they possess now.
Chelsea will be dying hard to regain back their title to Stanford Bridge. So do Arsenal. Manchester united will be showing the same fervent passion again as ever.

i think i speak for all when i say, LIVERPOOL NEED TORRES, his abilities up front seem to be what liverpools style of play is desperate for, and it would be a great shame indeed to let this opportunity pass as its something the fans have been waiting for for a long time, benitez should take control here and force what he and the rest of liverpool want
Akeeb, manchester, uk
even if the cost is that he will be the last of benitez's summer signings?
good one pat.

as a lifelong Liverpool fan, this is the boldest move for a clinical striker since owens dept. All the big 4 have a hitman striker.Chelsea -drogba.........Manu Rooney/saha>Arsena had henry >Liverpool>>>>>Torres? definitely.a guarantee of 20+ goals and a consistent rate above 60 is what we need to take it to the other backline.TORRES'dribbling, passing ,scoring and with the KING Gerrard roving plus the supporting cast -mean PREMIER LEAGUE CHAMPIONS 2007/2008 finally....we will never walk alone.....

Is Torres "a well proven striker with a fabulous track record?"
If you take away the penalties,he's a 1 in 3 or 4 striker and I predict that he'll score less than 10 league goals for Liverpool next season.
Fergus Sira-Lexon, England,
Liverpool should concentrate on this one. I think this is one of the most important step in liverpool polished history to turn itself into a serious title contender as reviewed above. We hope Gillet & Hicks will open the door for the move and help the Kop raised its standard against the top two clubs last season.
Well Torres is a well proven striker with a fabulous track record to his name. I doubt he'll have problems in suiting to premiership pace.
We hoped with a good blend of talents within the team as Englishmen, spaniards and the south americans will launch a serious bid next season.

As a lifelong Liverpool fan I'd love to see us sign Torres. His goalscoring record over the past two years is not as impressive as that od David Villa. However, unlike Villa Torres has the strength and directness that Villa lacks and I believe he will be a huge success in the Premiership. He could link well with Dirk Kuyt and the number od Spanish players at Anfield should help him settle. When Spain played England recently he was the best player on the pitch from either side and had the England back four in knots!
