Dead certs
Lee McCulloch is expected to complete a move to Rangers from Wigan Athletic for £2.5 million. The midfield player had a move lined up to the Clydesdale Bank Premier League club in January, when he put in a transfer request. Sunderland have signed Russell Anderson from Aberdeen for £1 million. The centre back, who was wanted by Fulham, has agreed a three-year deal.
Decent bets
Tottenham Hotspur are close to securing a deal to sell Reto Ziegler to Sampdoria for about £1.4 million. The winger was on loan at the Serie A club last season. Ziegler made his debut for Tottenham three years ago, but fell out of favour at the club, who had earmarked him as a potential left back. He had loan spells at SV Hamburg and Wigan Athletic two seasons ago and made only four appearances for Tottenham last season.
Newcastle United are interested in Gérémi, the midfield player who is out of contract at Chelsea. He can play at right back and in midfield, which is attractive to Sam Allardyce, the manager. Middlesbrough, Gérémi’s former club, are not interested in him. Allardyce’s next target is to complete a deal for Habib Beye, the Marseilles defender and captain. Sporting Lisbon have expressed an interest in Celestine Babayaro, who is surplus to requirements at Newcastle.
West Ham United have made an approach for Morgan De Sanctis, the 30-year-old Udinese goalkeeper. The East London club need a reserve for Robert Green after they released Roy Carroll at the end of the season and because Jimmy Walker is expected to leave Upton Park.
Long shots
Fenerbahçe have made an approach to sign John Carew, the Norway forward, who moved to Aston Villa from Lyons as recently as January.
Derby County and Birmingham City are interested in Heidar Helguson, the Fulham forward. Watford remain favourites to resign their former player.
Reports in France claim that Chelsea have made an offer of £12 million for Florent Malouda, the left winger. Wigan Athletic have rejected a bid from Sunderland for Leighton Baines, the left back. West Bromwich Albion have turned down a transfer request from Diomansy Kamara. Fulham have made an offer for the striker, who signed a three-year contract last summer, and a further option of a year in the club’s favour. He scored 23 goals last season.
Nicky Shorey, the Reading left back claims to be “flattered” by interest from West Ham United and Newcastle United.
