We gave you our world’s top 50 players and hundreds of you have responded. So many have done so, in fact, that we have picked out the best. Here are our top 20 replies, in no particular order:
Mr Todd, London, UK: Terrific analysis by Mr. Marcotti. But (ironically) as usual with football experts they massively under value the importance of goalkeepers.
Only 3 in the top fifty.
The omitting of Germans No.1 Jens Lehmann (in this top 50)is quite staggering. And to think Iker Casillas is ranked in 26th.
May I remind you the temperamental but masssively influential Lehmann is holder of many records.
The Champions League record for aggregate minutes not conceding a goal. The Champions League consecutive clean sheet records. First goalkeeper to save a penalty shoot out in an FA Cup final. He played every game in Arsenals FC 'invincible unbeaten season'
Aside from this- He was ranked 10th best player by fifa last year. He was also ranked 4th in The Times recent Fink Tank.
Ollie, Kent: To have Frank Lampard at 16 is an absolute joke, he shouldn't be near the top 50 players in the world. You can look at the stats, admittedly they are impressive (goals, assists) but his overall contribution to the team and ability is questionable, constantly shooting when there are better options on, his (quite terrible) misses go un-noticed, yet he has a reputation for his long range goals - Give most midfielders the same sort of role as he has for Chelsea and i'm 100% sure they'd get the same sort of stats. Just doesn't have a world class football brain in my opinion, unlike someone like Paul Scholes - who is ridiculously placed at number 38, quite simply a football genius.
I would also argue Ronaldinho shouldn't be second, and Eto'o shouldn't be fourth - Ronaldo and Essien should both be ahead of them. I also question whether Shevchenko and Ballack are worthy of being so high in the list.
Fernando Torres is incredibly over-rated, Farfan - poor standard of league, Seedorf ahead IMO.
Pablo, London, England: Surely you mean "European Leagues" top 50 footballers !!!!!!!!!!
John, London, England: This list clearly has a Serie A bias look...Italy is the least competitive of the Big 3 leagues...Inter sailed to the the title last year and they are not a great team by any stretch of the imagination! Henry should make it in the top 5, Giggs should be in the top 20 at least and Carragher shouldnt be on the list at all! And the point Marcotti made about Scholes? Just ask Keegan or Hoddle what can he can do away from his "mentor", as they will testify that he saved both their England managerial careers many a time!!
