Tottenham Hotspur are expected to reach an agreement with Charlton Athletic to sign Darren Bent in the next day. They are believed to have agreed to pay about £13 million rising to a possible £16.5m for the England forward. The fee will break Tottenham's transfer record of £11m, which they paid to Dynamo Kiev for Sergei Rebrov, the forward, seven years ago.
Bent has scored 31 goals in 68 league appearances for Charlton after joining from Ipswich Town for £2.5m. He will become Tottenham’s second significant signing of the summer, after Gareth Bale, the left back, joined from Southampton for £6m rising to £10m last month. Bent is believed to be willing to accept a weekly salary considerably less than the £75,000 he was offered by West Ham United. The 23-year-old turned down a five-year contract at Upton Park after West Ham had agreed a fee of £16m plus Hayden Mullins, the midfield player.
Tottenham are trying to sell Mido, the forward, among several other players. They include Anthony Gardner, Lee Young Pyo, Hossam Ghaly, Danny Murphy, Wayne Routledge and Teemu Tainio. Reto Ziegler, the winger, is close to joining Sampdoria for £1.4m.
