Dead certs
Darren Bent had a medical at Tottenham Hotspur last night as they
finalised a deal to sign the forward from Charlton Athletic on a
five-year contract. Tottenham raised their offer by £1 million to about £17
million. Charlton will use £3 million of the money to prise Robert Earnshaw,
the forward, from Norwich City.
Sheffield United claim to have agreed to sign Billy Sharp, the forward they released two years ago, but Scunthorpe United have denied that they have accepted an offer of about £2 million.
Decent bets
Chelsea are close to a deal to sign Patrick van Aanholt, a 16-year-old
central defender from PSV Eindhoven. Real Madrid are lining up
a fresh bid for Arjen Robben, the Chelsea winger who has two years left on
his contract.
Steven Davis is hopeful of completing a move to Fulham from Aston Villa. The midfield player, 22, has two years left on his contract. Nottingham Forest have made a £200,000 bid for Kelvin Wilson, the Preston North End defender.
Colchester United have offered about £200,000 for Clive Platt, the Milton Keynes Dons striker.
Long shots
Middlesbrough remain interested in Phil Jagielka, the Sheffield
United defender. He is also wanted by Everton and Bolton
Wanderers. Gretar Steinsson, the AZ Alkmaar right back, has again
been linked with Middlesbrough.
Ipswich Town will turn their attention to Malcolm Christie if they are unable to sign Francis Jeffers from Blackburn Rovers. The former Middlesbrough forward is in talks with Nottingham Forest.
Hull City claim that they will hold talks with Juninho Paulista. The former Brazil midfield player is a free agent after leaving Flamengo.

Bent in Mido out. The most exciting front line in the PL. True we need centre defence cover & left sided midfielder but transfer window only opens on Sunday!
This is our chance to make step change & challenge the top 4. If we make CL Berba will stay, simple as.
Answer is in our own hands.
Come on Spurs fans, lets give it a chance & dream of happy days to come eh.
Jeremy, Farnham,
17m way too much . It means Defoe has to go for about 10m .
Berbatov will go next year but Bent is not a replacement for him . More likely a longer term replacement for Keane . Anyways , I am not convinced this is good business . I prefer Defoe .
lostinthesixties, Farnham,
Plainly Mr Jol and his advisors have some sort of inside knowledge that the wider world is lacking in relation to the skills of Darren Bent. Just when you beleive Spurs are getting the idea, they confound with transfer decisions like this one. Explain yourself.
Pete, Melbourne, Australia
great signing for the mighty spurs. sure there may be so called better players but they dont always cut it in the prem do they? shevchenko and morientes to name two. if we are to brake into the top four then we need to spend big and in bent we have a proven prem goal scorer. goals win games not reputations!
jon, dudley,
dont get carried away, berbatov aint good enough for neither barca or real, but he will fit right in in United, the worst club ever
Peter Pikk, Hole, Norway
£17m for Darren Bent. Has the world gone completely mad?
He might be good but surely he's not that good.
Will Duffay, London,
Why aren't Spurs spending 17million on a midfielder, surely that money would buy a player of greater calibre than Darren Bent.
Is Bent just an early replacement when Berbatov is lured away next season by United, Barca or Madrid et al?
Steve, Sydney, Australia
