These aren't the best goals ever scored. Far from it. Our list contains a good sprinkling of toe-pokes, deflections and clownish mis-kicks. One of them was scored by a third division goalkeeper.
But despite their respective artistic merits, they all command a place in the annals of the game. They might have decided World Cup finals, settled championships or saved sides from relegation. Some of the goals stand out as statistical milestones. Others have entered the game's mythology to become shared treasures, revered by fans of every club. Others set records that will never be broken.
Whether they are sitters or scorchers, the fifty selections share one quality in common: each made a big impact on the history of football.
If you think we've missed any out, please let us know.
50 Iain Dunn - HUDDERSFIELD TOWN 3 Lincoln City 2, Auto Windscreens Shield, 1994. Even the keenest Terriers fan might be hard-pushed to recall Dunn's strike, but it claims an important niche in history as the first golden goal to settle a British cup game. Dunn was handed a gold (coloured) football to mark the occasion.
49 Peter Osgood - CHELSEA 2 Leeds 1, FA Cup Final replay, 1970. Ossie makes the list for two reasons. His opening goal helped win the Cup for Chelsea in one of the nastiest sporting duels of recent times. And it made him the most recent player to score in every round.
48 Ruud van Nistelrooy - Newcastle 1 MANCHESTER UNITED 2, Premiership, 2003. The Old Trafford outcast made it into the record books by scoring in his eleventh consecutive league match.
47 Bobby Charlton - Colombia 0 ENGLAND 4, friendly international, 1970. It was the comb-over king's 49th and last goal for England, setting a mark that has yet to be equalled.
46 Oliver Bierhoff - Czech Republic 1 GERMANY 2, Euro 96 final. The man with a name like a German off-licence scored the first golden goal to settle a major international final.
45 - Joe Payne's tenth. LUTON TOWN 12 Bristol Rovers 0, third division (south), 1936. Set the record for most goals in a league match.
44 Gary Lineker - Argentina 2 ENGLAND 1, World Cup quarter-final, 1986. England still went out, but Lineker's sixth in the tournament made him the first and only Englishman to win the World Cup Golden Boot.
43 Pele - SANTOS v Vasco Da Gama, 1969. The match in the Maracana was so obscure no one knows the score, but it witnessed the 1,000th goal of Pele's career. He went on to total 1,282, but admittedly that includes strikes in dubious exhibition games, and early goals scored for the 9th Sao Paolo cubs.
42 David Simmons - COLCHESTER UNITED 3 Leeds 2, FA Cup fifth round, 1971. Scored the crucial goal that sealed one of the greatest Cup shocks of all time.
41 Peter Withe - ASTON VILLA 1 Bayern Munich 0, European Cup final, 1982. The bearded Scouser's scrappy shinner won the big one for Villa in Rotterdam.
40 Eric Bryant - YEOVIL TOWN 2 Sunderland 1, FA Cup fourth round, 1949. Yeovil were in the Southern League, Sunderland the so-called Bank of England club. But the famous Huish slope, the Magic of the CupTM, and Bryant's extra-time winner were enough to create a seismic upset.
39 Alan Sunderland - ARSENAL 3 Manchester United 2, FA Cup final, 1979. The frizzy forward notched the most dramatic winner the Cup Final has seen, after United had pulled two goals back in the last few minutes.
38 Sammy Reid - BERWICK RANGERS 1 Rangers 0, Scottish FA Cup 1967. Reid scored the winner for the second division amateurs that still triggers disbelief around Ibrox.
37 Angelo Schiavio - ITALY 2 Czechoslovakia 1, World Cup final, 1934. Italy became the first European winners of the World Cup in the regrettable presence of Il Duce, thanks to the cramp-riddled veteran Schiavio's extra-time decider.
36 David Trezeguet - FRANCE 2 Italy 1, Euro 2000 final. The Juventus striker rounded off the best international tournament of recent years with a golden goal to sink plucky Italy.
35 Paolo Rossi - Brazil 2 ITALY 3, World Cup group match, 1982. Hat-tricks are a scarce commodity, and it needed Rossi's treble to beat one of the best teams never to have won the World Cup, in one of the best games in the tournament's 76 years.
34 Marquitos - Reims 3 REAL MADRID 4, European Cup final, 1956. It's easy to imagine that Real Madrid were unchallenged in the early years of this competition, but Marquitos scored the winner in the tense inaugural final against the team from Reims to set the pattern for several years to follow.
33 Alcides Ghiggia - Brazil 1 URUGUAY 2, World Cup final match, 1950. The hosts were runaway favourites to win the World Cup for the first time, in front of at least 199,000 in the Maracana, but outside-right Ghiggia scored the key goal ten minutes from time and Brazil had another eight-year wait to claim their destiny.
32 Bobby Stokes - Manchester United 0 SOUTHAMPTON 1, FA Cup Final, 1976. Scored one of the goals that made the FA Cup's reputation as the most compelling sporting competition ever devised, as unfancied second division Saints put it over Tommy Doc's division one glory boys.
31 Helmut Rahn - Hungary 2 WEST GERMANY 3, World Cup final, 1954. Rahn's late strike did more than win a World Cup. It raised the pall of gloom that haunted post-War Germany, and set the nation back on the road to peace and prosperity. Not a bad result from a close-range toe-ender.
30 Stephen Pearson - DERBY COUNTY 1 West Brom 0, Championship play-offs final, 2007. Depending on which paper you read, this goal guaranteed Derby anything between either £20 million and £27 million for a ride on the Premier League gravy train. Whatever the figure, the Scot's goal is probably the most valuable scored in any match.
29 Pele - Sweden 2 BRAZIL 5, World Cup final, 1958. This was the first World Cup final watched by a large audience on TV, and Pele's show did much to entrench football as the planet's top sport. For Brazil's third, he controlled the ball on his thigh, popped it over a Swede's head, and volleyed the ball home.
28 David Platt - Belgium 0 ENGLAND 1, World Cup second round match, 1990. Italia 90 re-ignited the nation's interest in football, beginning with this fist-pumping, heart-stopping moment – Gazza's late free-kick, Platt's athletic swivel and volley, and the celebrations that followed.
27 Morton Peto Betts - Wanderers 1 Royal Engineers 0, FA Cup Final, 1872. Won the first FA Cup Final with what contemporary press reports described as 'a well-directed kick under the tape'.
26 Ronald Koeman - HOLLAND 2 England 0, World Cup qualifier, 1993. But for Koeman's crucial goal, England might have gone on to qualify for the 1994 World Cup, won the final, and Sir Graham Taylor would still be England manager.
25 Carlos Alberto - BRAZIL 4 Italy 1, World Cup final, 1970. The full-back's fulminating shot to round off a perfect flowing move gave us the alpha and the omega of what football is all about.
24 Gary Lineker's third - ENGLAND v Poland, World Cup group F, 1986. Lineker was out of sorts and under pressure for his place from Kerry Dixon and Mark Hateley before getting his skates on against the Poles. His hat-trick revived England's fortunes and set him on the way to being the best striker in England history.
23 Ray Houghton - Italy 0 IRELAND 1, World Cup group E, 1994. The Glaswegian's effort at Giants Stadium set up Ireland's finest World Cup win.
22 Gerd Muller's second - England 2 WEST GERMANY 3, World Cup quarter-final, 1970. Der Bomber's extra-time shocker put the skids under Alf Ramsey's England reign.
21 Gerry Armstrong - Spain 0 NORTHERN IRELAND 1, World Cup group 5, 1982. Armstrong's strike in Valencia set the seal on Northern Ireland's proudest night.
20 Jan Domarski - England 1 POLAND 1, World Cup qualifier, 1973. One Pole goal put England out and laid waste to a generation of talent. The nation endured 12 World Cup-less years thereafter.
19 Don Masson - Wales 0 SCOTLAND 2, World Cup qualifier, 1977. Masson's penalty kick went a long way towards sending the Scots to the finals. But was the hand-ball by Joe Jordan? Of course it was by Joe Jordan.
18 David Beckham - ENGLAND 2 Greece 2, World Cup qualifier, 2001. The draw saved England's place in the finals, and Beckham's last-minute free-kick preserved his status as the team's most important player for a few more years.
17 Pele - BRAZIL 1 Wales 0, World Cup quarter-final, 1958. The 17-year-old scored late in the second half, but if Wales had grabbed the goal they deserved history may have panned out very differently.
16 Nandor Hidegkuti - England 3 HUNGARY 6, friendly international, 1953. It took less than a minute for the Magyars to blow apart the myth of English superiority with the first goal in a performance which changed the landscape of world football.
15 Hector Castro - URUGUAY 4 Argentina 2, World Cup final, 1930. The centre-forward scored in the last minute in Montevideo to confirm the hosts as the first-ever world champions.
14 Steve Chalmers - CELTIC 2 Inter Milan 1, European Cup final, 1967. Celtic's second goal in Lisbon was a victory for attacking football against the negative, anti-football of the Milanese. They became the first British team to win the trophy, and also clinched an immortal Quadruple.
13 Michael Thomas - Liverpool 0 ARSENAL 2, First Division championship decider, 1989. "It's up for grabs now!" gasped Brian Moore in the commentary box as Thomas strode through in the last minute at Anfield to score the goal that gave Arsenal the title in the most dramatic climax to a season in memory.
12 John Robertson - Hamburg 0 NOTTINGHAM FOREST 1, European Cup final, 1980. The Scot's shot was good enough to win the Cup for Forest for a second year in a row. Will a club of that size ever win the Champions League? Unlikely. And retain it? Never.
11 Ian Porterfield - Leeds United 0 SUNDERLAND 1, FA Cup Final, 1973. Most neutrals' idea of the best FA Cup Final upset ever: plucky Division Two underdogs, Jim Montgomery's double save, Bob Stokoe's porkpie hat – and Porterfield's iconic rocket shot into the roof of the net.
10 Xabi Alonso - AC Milan 3 LIVERPOOL 3, European Cup final, 2005. It was a scuffed rebound from a penalty, but it capped the greatest comeback European football has ever seen.
9 Ray Kennedy - Tottenham 0 ARSENAL 1, Division One, 1971. Kennedy's goal two minutes from time in their last League match of the season gave them the title – and the chance to win their first Double five days later at Wembley.
8 Alan Kennedy - LIVERPOOL 1 Real Madrid 0, European Cup final, 1981. The full-back they called Barney Rubble reduced Real Madrid's defence to tiny fragments with a bravura run and crashing shot. Click here to see the goal.
7 Jimmy Glass - CARLISLE 2 Plymouth Argyle 1, Division Three, 1999. Last day of the season, and with seconds left Carlisle are drawing 1-1 and doomed to drop into the Conference. Their on-loan goalkeeper chugs up the field and blasts the winner which saves the Cumbrians. Scarborough go down instead. Click here to see the goal.
6 Tommy Smith - Borussia Moenchengladbach 1 LIVERPOOL 3, European Cup final, 1977. "What a delighted scorer! It's Tommy Smith!" burbled the TV commentator as the doughty defender's howitzer header rippled the back of the net to win Liverpool's first European Cup.
5 George Best - MANCHESTER UNITED 4 Benfica 1, European Cup final, 1968. Extra-time on a torrid night at Wembley, and no-one had an ounce of energy left to give – except the thoroughbred Best. With the score tied at 1-1 he waltzed through the Portuguese defence and scored to fire Busby's men with fresh hope. Click here to see the goal.
4 Stan Mortensen's third - BLACKPOOL 4 Bolton Wanderers 3, FA Cup Final, 1953. Mortensen became the last player to score a FA Cup Final hat-trick, and also put the tin lid on what is hailed as the best match Wembley has ever seen.
3 Dixie Dean's third - EVERTON 3 Arsenal 3, Division One, 1928. Dean needed a hat-trick in the last match to set a record of 60 goals in a season. He scored two early on, and in the last few minutes Dean leapt above the Arsenal defence and headed No 60. Will his record ever be broken? No.
2 Teddy Sheringham - Bayern Munich 1 MANCHESTER UNITED 2, European Cup Final, 1999. Teddy's timely mis-kick saved United from defeat and set them on the way to the Treble – the greatest feat in the history of English football. Click here to see the goal.
1 Geoff Hurst's second - ENGLAND 4 West Germany 2, World Cup final, 1966. England had beaten West Germany once in normal time only to suffer a late equaliser. Now they had to beat them again in extra-time. In the 100th minute Nobby Stiles prods a pass to the indomitable Ball on the right. He skins Karl-Heinz Schnellinger and cracks over a cross into the penalty area. Hurst finds enough energy to steal a yard on his marker, and thumps the ball against the underside of the bar. Russian Linesman Tofik Bachramov says the rebound is over the line, and England are 3-2 up! They think it's all over! It isn't now, but it will be in about ten minutes. Click here to see the goal.
Is 1970 when Osgood scored (49th goal) Really recent times???? it was 38 years ago for crying out loud.
David Hunter, stockholm, sweden
You've forgotten Steven Gerrrard's scrorcher for Liverpool in the 90th minute of the '06 FA cup final against West Ham.
Ian, Perth, Australia
What about the goal by the late Antonio Puerta in extra time in the semi-final of the 2006 UEFA Cup against Schalke in the Sanchez Pizjuan?
It sent Sevilla to the final, which they eventually won, their first trophy in years and the catalyst for Sevilla´s recent revival and, perhaps, ´golden era´.
José, London,
What about Alfonso´s goal in injury time for Spain against Yugoslavia that saved Spain in Euro 2000?
Antonio Puerta against Schalke?
Kluivert in Euro 96 against England that sent Scotland out?
Vialli in the FA Cup comeback v Liverpool in 97... if not for that we wouldn´t be the club we are now.
José, London,
"Hewit's waiting in the middle..." What about John Hewitt's diving header to beat Real Madrid in Extra Time of the 1983 ECWC final in Gothenburg? Not a mention. Disgrace. But perhaps as important as this was the equaliser that Alex McLeish scored for Aberdeen in the quarterfinal of the same tournament against Bayern Munich. It was a header from a free kick routine which Man Utd players attempted to repeat a few seasons ago in the Premiership. Originally, McMaster and Strachan pretend to foul up a free kick by both running past the ball at the free kick. As they argue, Strachan quickly turns and chips the ball in McLeish rises like a salmon and powers the ball home. As Jock Brown said "A carefully rehearsed piece of tomfoolery to deceive the German defence". Fergie obviously still remembers the good old days. An important goal as no lesser side than Man Utd attempts to recreate it from time to time.
Stewart, London,
Well done on a very accurate list! probably a few too many non british goals as we all know british football is the original and best...so all you whinging aussie's crying because australia's 31st goal against samoa or someone isn't included, THATS BECAUSE NO ONE APRT FROM YOU LOSER'S ARE INTRESTED IN CONCAF.....that's why british football is most watched of all.... i thank you
JENKINS, BRISTOL, ENGLAND
wheres oles goal against munich in the 1999 final
andy pasco, rotorua, newzealand
Of course it will have an English bias, being an English newspaper. But let's drop the whole ' UK V. Argentina conflict issue thinly disguised as a football debate' thing and move on.
Maradona's second goal against England was incredible and should be right up there, whether you like him or not.
So try and get over the first one.It was handball , but it counted. And it was over 20 years ago.And it will make up for Geoff Hurst's 'goal' that you got away with forty odd years ago.And Archie Gemmill's goal against Holland should have been in there too. Not that i'm bitter.
Kenny, Corby,
Cantona's against Liverpool FA Cup 1996? The Double double? and why isnt ole's in there?
Drew, Manchester,
what about carlos alberto's goal in mexico 1970? what a team effort.Beats that maradona goal for me anyday of the week.Poetry in motion!!!!!!!!!
daimo, royston, england
GROSSO? SOLSKJAER both with Bayern and Liverpool? Giggs against Arsenal?
Francesco, Florence,
GERRARD????????????
2 last minute goals vs olympiakos and west ham from 30 yards out!
jack, perth, australia
Sanchez for Wimbledon against Liverpool, FA Cup final.
Never say die!!!!!!
That match, (and Arsenal beating them at Anfield for title,) destroyed Liverpools hold on English football, and they have only recently got back to what they used to be.
Russ, London, Surrey
94th minute of the 1999 division 2 play-off final?
Paul Dickov, great finish and one of the most important goals in Manchester City's history.
Gaz, Kent, UK
What a terrible mistake! you have forgotten Grosso's goal in 2006 World Cup match Germany-Italy!And I do not talk about Materazzi who scored in the final...
Cecco, Varese, Italy
well most important can be the most ugly goals and not worth seeing again, you cant say that about any of matt le tissiers goals!! thats quality !!!!
paule gallie, norwich, england
WHAT ABOUT OLE GUNNER SOLSKJAER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Natasha , Eau Claire, USA/ Wisconsin
you should call it ( 50 most important goals in british football )
its clear that all goals in favour of english teams or thier national team ...!!!
Hussain, Kuwait city, Kuwait
This list is so short sighted ! There are many many more important goals than those mentioned here... how about Sevilla goal keeper Palop's injury-time equaliser goal against Shakhtar Donetsk in 2007 UEFA sup? Sevilla was spared and went on to win UEFA cup! How unlikely and important that goal was? This is just an example.. I think we should no attempt such a calssification because generally all goles are important in a win. A classification based on how spectacular it was is more justifiable.
Peelu, Bangalore, India
Ray Houghton, Stuttgart 1988,
Ireland 1-0 England
Gav, Dublin, Ireland
I saw a beautiful goal at the 1986 World Cup ....
..... maybe you just can't remeber it .....
...... one little guy called Maradona crossed half field controlling the ball and dribbling every english on his way to score with a soft touch with his foot .....
......... obviously, you don't want to remeber it !!!!
Argentina rules !!!
Johnny B Goode, Avellaneda, Argentina
Here here James Griffin! Couldnt have put it better myself.
Chris W, Lewisham, London
Ryan Giggs, Arsenal 1 - Man United 2. Fa cup semi final replay. Giggs casually and empjatically rounded half a dozen very good arsenal defenders to score in the second period of extra time when united only had 10 men. this goal was superb and was the key totheir treble success. think that deserves mentioning.
Alex Guilford, Cheltenham, UK
To all the Agries.
Maradonna will never make it on a list of great goals that is compiled by a British newspaper. He is a cheat and a fraud. And i dont just mean the first goal in Mexico, he was sent home from the USA in disgrace and was in court so many times in Italy he had his own seat.
However he is a national hero in your country....says it sall really.
Geoff Hurst deserves to be at number one!
James Griffin, London, UK
I think the Penalty taken by John Aloisi for Australia to Qualify for the 2006 World Cup in Germany is very significant. I would have rated that in the top fifty, of course I am biased as I am an Australian.
That goal was actually voted in a poll in Oz as the most significant sporting event ever in our sporting history. Not to bad for a country that ranks "soccer" lowly in comparison to others sports.
Barry, Brisbane, Australia
Eusebio Portugal 5- North Korea 3
miranda, porto, portugal
maradona
Juan , la plata, argentina
Certainly, Pelè's goals should be numbers 1-10 in the list
Moysés, Gurupi, Brazil
what about ernie hunts volley for coventry
martin davies, hereford, herefordshire
Paul Dickov, for Man City in the play off final against Gilligham, 1999?
94th minute equaliser - without which the club would probably still be in division 3.
Reg, london,
Surely Michael Thomas should be number one. To score in the last minute of the whole season against your rivals to win the league! You can't get any more dramatic than that. Liverpool even bought him to make sure he couldn't do it again. John Barnes was already celebrating when Thomas scored to wipe the smile of his face.
Rivaldo's overhead kick against Valencia in the last minute should also be there. Again, the last minute of the season to put an underachieving Barca into the champions league. Unlike most important goals it was a beauty, and part of a hat trick in a 3-2 win!
Chris W, Lewisham, London
hi
maradona?
do you remember mexico?
do you remember that shorty guy?
bye
ferni, bs as, argentina
Puskas's 'drag back'
England v Hungary (25th November 1953)
One flash of skill that no one in this country had seen before.
Sent Thousands of children in to their back garden to try it and English football home to re-think the game.
colin, Glasgow,
David Rocastle (R.I.P.), Arsenal v Spurs league Cup Semi final replay, 1987. Scored the winner in injury time, Arsenal had lost the first leg, been two-nil down on aggregate in the second leg and had been losing with 4 minutes left of the replay. Classic...
Hugh Jarse, Philadelphia,
Really this is a list of the most important British goals with a handful 'Johnny Foreigner' scored to make it look a bit more objective. Any list such as this is going to be biased towards whoever compiled it. I don't think many Uruguayans will muse too much over the significance of Iain Dunn's strike to World football but, then again, not many Brits would consider Waldemar Victorino's 1980 winner against Nottingham Forest for Club Nacional de Futball in the World Club Cup (first to be held in Japan duntchyaknow). Depends which ones are more important as far as the individual is concerned. It's just horses for courses.
Personally I would have said Solskjaer's goal should be in there rather than Sheringham's for the '99 Champions League final ... with it being an iconic injury time winner in the biggest annual club game in the World and the last EC final of the 20th Century 'n' all that ... it's just a matter of opinion.
Peeps, Wales,
Trevor Brooking's Cup Final goal from 1980 should be there. Not only because it was a rare header from the great man but also because it won the game for West Ham, the last club to win the FA Cup from outside the top flight. Difficult to see that happening again anytime soon...
Andy, Uckfield, Sussex
50 most important goals without Marco Van Basten Goal in European Cup Final agaisnt Russia, also without Maradona ??? we know you hate him for <<LA MAIN THE DIEU>> but a bit of honesty won`t kill,,,,,,,,,
william, LONDON,
How did The Times compile this list. Survey of 10 random shoppers in Milton Keynes or panel of experts that included Bobby Charlton, Ray Wilkins and Andy Gray?
Steve Patterson, Fleetwood, Lancashire
"Of course its British-centric. Its an article in a British newspaper, written by a Briton, to by read by many thousands of Brits who have followed British football since they were born."
Who wrote this? Henry the Eigth....? Have you ever heard of globalization? Readers from Croatia, Vietnam, Spain, Norway, Colombia, Canada, Australia, Italy, SouthAfrica, Argentina...read this site, this site is global, wake up!! we are in a common world!
This list shoudl specify the 50 best British goals.
Nayim´s goal always the best!
Jose, Zaragoza, Spain
Strange that the majority of people moaning about the english biast then bleat on about goals for their own country. I dont see any Argentinians crying for the inclusion of Pele's goals
Please read the title- MOST IMPORTANT! Maradonnas 1st goal in the QUARTER final against England should probably be there but his second, as good as it was, should not.
And obviously it is going to have English biast as it is an English newspaper, sold in England so will cover the english domestic league. If it was a spanish paper I expect it would cover the copa del rey and primera liga.
I wouldnt expect to go on to an Argentinian or Spanish web site and see FA cup goals and I certainly wouldnt complain about it!
And talking about holding on to pride- the Falklands war is over as well now, let it go.....
Dan, Kent, England
Steven Gerrard 2006 F.A. Cup final. Gerrard scores from 35yards in the last minute of injury time to take the game into extra time. Liverpool go on to win the cup.
Chris Healy, Guildford, Surrey UK
whislt englished biased, it still does not hold water, how about a worldwide selection in catagories:
1. Header
2. Shot
3. Sigifgance
4. Spectacular
etc etc etc
alan, keighley,
alright i'm norwegian, but how could you include teddy's goal against bayern at second place, and then leave solskjær's winning goal out of the top 50????
gubben, bergen , norway
Somebody tell me why Dixie Deans hat-trick goal is 3rd ever? OK, he needed 3 to break George Camsells record. Great. I bet they're still dancing in the streets of Rio over that one. I'm not knocking the achievement, just it's importance. You could find 50 goals like these in every country. Specify England next time, if that's what you really mean.
Huw, Cardiff, UK
Having read the list, seen many of the 'important' goals in question, I have to concur with many of the posters' comments. What makes most of the goals important? Surely v. Nistelrooy scoring 11 goals from 2yards, a milestone? yes, important? erm, I don't know.! Koemans free kick, England already demoralised, England already losing..!! So important goals, which one of the two did you miss, the one that GOD scored with his hand, that anyone else trying it immediately gets booked, gets more references, column inches, penned the phrase 'HAND OF GOD'.? OR, the one that says players with real ability will ghost past 6 players in a World Cup game, score and inspire generations to play (Messi, do the maths,people)...? HOWEVER much we despise him, DIEGO ARMANDO MARADONA cannot be forgotten, we ALL remember BOTH goals, BUT are too afraid to admit for fear of feeling we may be unpatriotic in some small way. To Argentinians that game was the 1st confrontation since the Falklands, need I say more.
ozzimandius, MANCHESTER, ENGLAND
the most important goal to my team {Celtic} was indeed Chalmers but I think the most important goal is the one scored by Michael Thomas for Arsenal v Liverpool to clinch the title 88-89 A great way to win the league !!
Rick, Glasgow,
Some of the comments left by people are ridiculous. This list is compiled with reference to Britain. I don't agree with the list but I do agree that Geoff Hurst's goal is the most important goal as far as England's concerned. And I also agree that Jimmy Glass' goal deserves its place on the list - In world football it's an obscure goal, but in English football it was an important goal that had had huge ramifications for those involved.
If you ask anyone in England what the best goal of all time is, no doubt they will say Marradona's against England. I personally think that Marradona is the best player ever. And so do many more people in the England.
We're not bitter or arrogant. It seems that everyone thinks we are. You should visit the UK to see for yourselves.
Enjoy the list to see what goals are/were important to us.
adam, new york ,
Of course its British-centric. Its an article in a British newspaper, written by a Briton, to by read by many thousands of Brits who have followed British football since they were born.
I can accept the lack of at least 1 of Maradona's goals is probably wrong, but can anyone name the teams who took part in the first Copa del Rey final in Spain? More importantly, would the majority of the readership care who took part? No. They want to see that the first FA Cup final is in the 50 most important goals.
Stop whinging.
Andy, London,
As some goals from Pele and Paolo Rossi are included then this is surely a world list so having 30+ english goal in there is just ridiculous and narrow-minded. I'll tell you just off the top of my head 3 of the most important goals ever:
1. Ghiggia. El maracanazo. Nothing can top this.
2. Maradona. Hand of god. It can still get people talking endlessly.
3. Muller. 74 WC final. Wins the WC, becomes top WC striker in history.
Yet not one of them even in your top 10.
How about these other goals that are surely more memorable than half of your british goals:
Kostadinov. WC qualifier, Paris, 1993. Stops France from reaching the WC in the final minute of the final qualifying game.
Asprilla. The goal for Parma which ended Milan's invincible run of almost 2 seasons.
Salenko. His fifth in one single WC game. A record that will stand for ages.
Pak Doo-Ik. WC66. The goal that eliminated Italy and put North Korea in the quarterfinals.
Sergio, Turin, Italy
What about Real Zaragoza Nayim´s last minute goal from midfield against Arsenal in 1995 Cup Winners Cup final? The memory sometimes fails!! Viva Real Zaragoza, Spain!!
Jose, Zaragoza, Spain
The Michael Thomas goal has to be in the top 3 and I say that as a Liverpool fan. One goal in the last minute of the last game of the season decides the title - and you deem Dixie Dean's hat-trick in a meaningless game more import.
Also not sure why Sheringham is higher than Solskjaer, whose goal clinched the treble.
It's obviously a list of the biggest goals in English football, which is fair enough, but should be specified.
RH, London,
More English drivel. The Iraq goal to win last weekend's Asia Cup should be there. Or doesn't Asia, or Africa, or Oceania or Concafaf, count? What about the fastest goal every scored in a major league match, the world record for most goals in one international, the world record for most goals in one game, the first goal scored at the first World Cup, etc, etc.
Stephen, Canberra, Australia
It's a real shame putting a goal which never existed of Hurst in the 66 WCfinal in the 1st place of the the top 50 goals! It's simply incredible!I'm more than sure that the "guy" who invented this list went by far out of point from the original topic and the Times should reassess the credibility of such journalists: I'm afraid the list should be called A List of Goals from the Best English Patriot. Come on poor journalist I think the much-respected "Times" and its readers deserves much better! I assure you that although local football level in Malta is one of the worse on the planet, having a look at last season's goals in our Premier League, a lot nicer, much more beautiful goals have been scored than your so called number 1 Goal ever!!
So you can imagine, what the Italian Serie A, the English Premiership, Bundesliga, Spanish Liga, and the South American countries Leagues and the respective National Teams have to offer. And what about Maradona's 2nd goal vs England in 1986!errr
Corolla, St. Paul's Bay, Malta
and where is maradona????
32 of best goals are british??
This is not a serious publication anymore.
Don´t Have credit
Michael, Sheffield,
No room for Ray Houghtan's header against England, Euro 88 in Germany? leading to "plucky little Eire's" first win in its first major competition against the home of football....
Ciaran, Dublin,
I agree withy Paul Mantz from Croatia.
Relatively speaking Ron Radfords goal for Hereford v Newcastle in a 3rd Round FA Cup Replay in 1972 was quite amazing, it equalised Malcom McDonalds opener for Newcastle and not only did he hit it from all of 40 yards plus after taking a return pass on the halfway line, but it was still going like a rocket when it it the back of the net. (I was there)
The significance of that goal was that it must also be taken into account that Hereford were a Non League club then and Newcastle were in the Old Div 1 (Now the Premiership) Hereford went on to beat Newcastle. On the back of that result and in the next round taking The Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters West Ham to a replay, got elected to the Football League.
That Goal is still featured on the opening of Match of The Day 0n BBC.
David Wilcox, West Kirby, Wirral
Maradona's hand of god goal!!!
also perhaps teh goal that ended Arsenal's unbeaten run. I think it was a penalty won by Rooney?
Maybe Roy Essandoh's goal in the FA Cup 1/4 final. The player hired through teletext who came on and score the winner for Wycombe against Leicester
Mike, London,
The title should for this piece should surely read "the 50 most important British goals" of all time. Thanks to those posters who pointed out that The Times is a British publication and those not happy with the goals should get their own nations' newspapers to run their own. Really helpful!
A Collins, Birmingham,
If we could all just take time out, breath & LEARN TO READ - the title is 50 most IMPORTANT goals, not the 50 BEST.
That should quieten Pro Maradona Argentians, Italians, scottish, any other anti-English posters on here. The Hand of God goal was significant for the utter outrage it caused in the UK & forever tarnished the rep of a player who should be lauded in the same breath as Pele, Garnicha, Eusebio etc - it should be on the list. The 2nd in the same game was fantastic, one of the best goals I've ever seen (& I'm English BTW) however he'll always be remembered for the cheating, substance abuse & wasting his amazing talent first & foremost.
Zidane's in the CL final 2002 was good, but it would'nt win any Prem goal of the season.
It is very English league ecentric though and if you're counting Hurst's 2nd as number 1, you've also missed the 'goal' that started one of the WORST world cups in memory - Diana Ross @ WC 94 opening ceremony - a penalty from 6yds that missed ;o)
Andy, Auckland, NZ,
This is quiet funny, before making an article like this, please, watch some football OK?, guys come on, Maradona's goal on '86 vs Uk isnt here???????? !!!!!!!!!!
This is not serious!!!!,
also i think that Esteban Cambiasso goal in WC'06 was a GREAT GOAL,
I just really cant believe it.
Pablo, Rosario, Argentina
u seem 2 be a bit pro-bristish. of course r . if these were the most, whatbare the MOST ones???
I'd rather call these the list of most importand british, AND partly int goals. emphasis is on BRIT
Csire balazs, Budapest, Hungary
Heavens above haven't we touched a raw nerve! In case you hadn't noticed The Times is a British publication so you can hardly expect us to think that goals in any other country were that important to us. You don't like it, get your own papers to run a similar poll! Maradona indeed. Talk about over rated.
Kevin Stone, London, England
Yo forgot to add Martha's goal against the United States in the Pan American games in Brazil.
Henry Pagan, Toronto ,
Ryan giggs arsenal vs man utd......villa park.....1999 FA cup semi final replay........extra time 1 man down........dribbled past six defenders....rocked the roof of the net nominated as F A cup goal of the century............................now that's got be in the top 20
T. M., Mbabane, Swaziland
Paulo Rossi?
seth taylor, cambs, uk
What about the goal(s) that gave QPR the distinction of being the first League Cup winners from the third tier of English football in 1967?
Pompey Dave, Foster City, CA. USA
This is a human list. Maradona plays in god list and there´s only one goal on it, we all know which one and will be always in our hearts. Gracias Diego.
Pablo Sanjurjo, Bilbao, Spain
You forgot to add Martha's goal against the United States in the Pan American games football match in Rio de Janeiro, July 2007.
Henry Pagan, Toronto ,
it is going it to touch for Diego, has Maradona there, mark two to it, steps on the Maradona ball, it takes by the right the genius of world-wide soccer, and leaves third and it is going to touch for Burruchaga⦠Always Maradona! Genius! Genius! Genius! ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta⦠Goooooal⦠Goooooal⦠i want to cry! My God , lives soccer! Golaaaaaaazooooooo! Diegooooooool! Maradona! It is for crying, forgive me⦠Maradona, in a memorable bullfight, the play for all time⦠cosmic small barrel⦠from which planet you came? To leave the way as much English! So that the country is a fist tightened, shouting by Argentina! ⦠Argentina 2 - England 0⦠Diegoal, Diegoal, Diego Armando Maradona⦠God thanks, by football, Maradona, these tears, this Argentina 2 - England 0 ".
Constantin, Sitges, Spain
32 of the 50 goals are either scored by an English team or by an English player, football is not exclusive to England... These goals may have changed the course of Brittish football yet not the world's... Where are Maradona's goals against you in 1986, Van Basten in the Euro 88, Zidane's volley with Real Madrid against Leverkusen in 2002, Puskas's brilliant goal at Wembley when Hungary defeated England in 1953 and so on?
Eduardo Teran, Panama City, Panama
Don`t cryyyyyyyyyyyyy for me Englaaaaand !!!!
Mmmm, is a very strange ranking ... but it is done by English. Don' t forget Maradona ... the best !!!
Alex, Barcelona, Spain
An excellent list but why no mention of the great Cardiff City FA Cup win of 1927. Only time the winners have not been English and the last time we beat the Gunners. How very dare you !!!
Taff Llewellyn
Glyn Llewellyn, Aylesbury, uk
Looks guys the clue is in the title; its the 50 most "important" goals not the 50 "best" goals. So please stop bleating on about Maradona - he would dominate a list of best goals but that's not the point of the article
rob, london, england
Um, what about the Ryan Giggs goal against Arsenal in the FA cup semi-final replay 1999? That was the goal that turned the season and made the treble a real possibility.
hannah, Leamington,
Thanks for Mr. Domarski's goal!
Adamas, Warta, Poland
How about jasper gronkjaer's against Liverpool that sealed Chelsea's qualification to the Champions League. Had that none gone in, the Blues would have gone bust.
mattwhite, leeds, uk
What about Trevor Brooking's headed goal for 2nd Division West Ham take the FA Cup final over 1st Division Arsenal? When else did Sir trevor score with his head???
Simon Foster, Hanoi, Vietnam
Football's not english. Don't you know? Who cares about the FA division 3 goals...
Jpo, Warsaw,
Teddy's goal was important as it was the equaliser... but what about the winner? How can OG Solaskear's WINNER not get a mention?!!!!
seth taylor, cambs, uk
Seeing that I recognised about a third of the goals, made me feel better about my football knowledge...
Thanks for a great laugh!!!
You guys ever write for Monty Python?
Maybe auditioning for the next Mr. Bean movie? A hit...
Luis Cartin, Città di Castello, Italy
Have you ever heard about Diego Armando Maradona???
Vincent, Moscow, Russia
You've missed Steven Gerrard's last minutes equaliser against West Ham in the FA Cup final. 30 seconds from defeat then Stevie G hits a howitzer shot from 35 yards.
Kim Bennett, Wirral,
OK, Maradona's goal is not the most important, but maybe one of the best..... But what about the one scored by Mohammed Ali Ammar "Nayim" in the final of the Cup Winners Cup, 1995 (Real Zaragoza-Arsenal): minute 120, 50 meters away from the goal keeper.... That's one of the 50 most important and nice ever scored.....
davicius, Zaragoza, Spain
It's embarrasing that Maradona's second goal against England in 1986 is not in this list. I thought that the British had matured, but I guess they still have a lot to learn regarding being humble. The absence of that goal renders this list meaningless, and hurts the Times' credibility when covering football.
Jose Pazsoldan, ithaca, New York,
where is maradonas goal??i cant believe it....
m@xi, Santa Fe, Argentina
You started your article saying that not all the best goals are here, what you didn't say is that it was made by some one who missed to see many goal, there is not other explanation for not include Zidane's Goal in the Champions League when Real Madrid won the last cup... I'm not mentioning Messi or Maradona because many other people are doing in it for me. I guess you should report on Beckham and the Galaxy.... hahahaha.. and call that soccer or football or as you wish and leave the rest for true professionals, come on.
Henry, los angeles, california
Diego
Armando
Maradona...
Where is the best player of all times...
As "Times" goes by...
Ah, England England... it was a long way: from fair play to vanity fair.
Nic, Rome,
just one thing....DIEGO ARMANDO MARADONA
NICO, BARCELONA,
god, i can't believe Maradona's goal against England in Mexico '86 is not selected. it is the BEST GOAL EVER!!! this ranking is completely biased. 32 goals you selected were scored either by English clubs or the English national team.
Fernando Donoso, Buenos Aires, Argentina
Hey, I think you missed the goal I scored yesterday in a five-a-side match!!!!
Vincenzo, Bogota, Colombia
""not surpriesed that the country of Mr. Bean could produce
such a list. they're both hilarious!
Piero, Firenze, Italy""
Amen, Amen!!!!!!!!
Charlie, Sydney , Australia
The most important goal? Surely the one that on a certain day made you
wish that you were the one that had scored it and is the reason why football is the great game. No followers , no football. Goals we (ok,some of us) have seen from players like Di Stefano, Puskas, Koszic, Maradona,Pele, van Basten, , Best ,Law, Charlton, Sivori, Romario, Ronaldo, Socrates, Cruyff, Robben, Beardsley; add your own. Then again, perhaps the most important goal was, perhaps , the one you scored on a cold Saturday morning in January 19-- in front of twelve(if you were lucky) supporters for your local team and which made you believe that football had a meaning way beyond ads and money and all the sh**t that has surrounded this art form over the past twenty years.
Eamon Sheeran, Murcia, Spain
Jorge, France
The list is more about england that about the world or it looks like that to me. If you ask any professional or master who knows a lot about football I am sure that he will say that the most important goal in history (not the most beautifull) is ghiggia for Uruguay in Maracana (1950) it is a world cup final,it is in Maracana against Brasil At home, it was in front of 200000 people, we will never see that much people in a football,s stadium Is it not true? is there anything more dramatic than " el maracanazo"? I don,t really think so. Thank you! Viva El Futbol!
Jorge , Paris, France
Is the list about the best goals or the goals that made the biggest difference to a game or competition? And it is meant to be English-oriented or include all goals? The compiler seems to include everything.
Maradona's second against England in 86 was one of the best, but it was only a semi-final, so was it the most significant?
Meanwhile, winning goals in several European finals have been omitted, including Dalglish scoring against Bruges in 78, Alan Kennedy's last penalty against Rome (who were bizarrely playing the final at home thanks to UEFA's bias against English teams) in 84 which gave Liverpool their treble, I suspect Forest and Villa fans will have some suggestions too. Then there was Gerrard's 90th minute scorcher in the 2006 FA cup final.
P. Thompson, Liverpool, UK
Great fun from beggining to end!!!!! What a hilarious list.
If it were called "50 british goals" at least it wouldnt be so embarasing.
1. The greatest comeback European football has ever seen might have been that in the 1960 European Cup final when Real Madrid were 2-0 down against Eintracht Frankfoort in the tenth minute to end up winnig 7-3
2. Ever heard of Van Basten, Raul, Zidane, Maradona, Eusebio, Puskas....?
3. All my respect to Luton town, Queens Park Rangers, Lincoln City, Plymouth Argyle....
4. 66 World Cup was at least as forgetable anr regreatable as 34. Geoff Hurst's goal WASNT a goal at all
5. Glory and Honour to RAUL TAMUDO playing for Español who scored the equaliser (2-2) in June07 against Barcelona, helping Real Madrid win its 30th La Liga and sending Barca back to its (natural) second position.
6. About goal 16, please can anyone explain me what "the myth of English superiority" is? Never heard of it before....
Esperanza, Leon, Spain
MARADONA
Juan, Santiago, Santiago
Se olvidaron del gol De MARADONA en el mundial del 86` jojojojo What a beauttifull Gollllllllll!!!! Argentina2-Inglaterra1 jaaaaaaaa! Pecho frioooo!
German, Cordoba, Argentina
i can't believe, considering your list, that my name doesn't appear after i scored 20 goals playing against my little sister...
please, stick to the facts! do you really think gary lineker's goal against argentina in 1986 is more important than maradona's second goal in the same match??? or kempes' in 1978 or burruchaga's in 1986 final.
please, we all know you won the war, but sometimes admitting the truth is good.
Fernando Donoso, Buenos Aires, Argentina
I can't believe Maradona still hurts after more than 20 years!!!. Ahhh, you make my laugh!!!, what a great joke is this ranking....jajajajaja!!!Give me a HAND....sorry, a brake. JAJAJA
El Colo, Buenos Aires, Argentina
Maradona's second is not in a list...
Walter, Argentina,
What?
What about Maradona's second goal against england in the world cup of 1984?
Without question the mos wonderful thing I've ever seen...
MartÃn, Buenos Aires, Argentina
This list is a joke, should be named the 50 english most important goals...
Ivan, madrid,
Glad to see you have included Stevie Chalmers' European Cup winning goal in this list - usually all things north of Hadrian's Wall are omitted when they are compiled. But please note, Celtic won FIVE trophies that season, which is one more than the "Quadruple" you credit them with.
John Woods, Irvine, Ayrshire
T ogive an absolute list is a bit silly. Anyway just to play along I would suggest,if my memory serves me well, a goal that di Stefano scored against Partizan Belgrade in the 1st European Cup. If he had not scored it , Real would never have gone on to win the first five cups in a row.
Eamon Sheeran, Murcia, Spain
although the list can't claim to be definitive (and is sadly lacking foreign domestic goals, but I guess you can't know everything), it is fair to say that bobby charlton's 49th for england, lineker's goal in the loss to argentina or van nistelroy's 11th in a row are really quite meaningless. nobody cares about records like that. no, really.
others have mentioned robbins's and hughes's fa cup goals as being meaningful - bruce's goal against sheff wed also would make my list. I understand sheringham's goal being ahead of ole's, though. there was only going to be one winner.
michael thomas's goal is the only goal by a team I don't support that has got me out of my seat cheering!
and if you're going to rule out hurst's for not crossing the line, you should probably rule out stokes's for offside too. or include maradona's hand of god goal. in fact, the only goal from that england v argentina game you include is the only one that really didn't matter. at all.
jem, london, uk
Give me a brake!!!!!PLEASE.Is this the best u can come up with?Put that pride on the shelves n face reality Maradona goal in 86 to England ,yes that one! He took on the all bloody England squad n made history in football that is the "GREAT GOAL EVER"Please!
Filippo, New York, USA
hahaha, where is Maradona´s 2nd goal to you guys in 1986?
Everyone who loves soccer in earth knows that is maybe not the best one but surely in the 5 best ones. besides where is Messi´s goal against Geafe? and several more. I am not saying this because I am argentinean its just a coincidence, despite the passion for soccer I feel I am looking for Martadona´s goal without the rivality context
greetins
Mariano Calzada, Munch, Germany
Great goals from third rate English player and Teams
frank , Thornhill , Canada
I think Max Giacomelli's score in The Quays Pub vs The Waterfront (1-0) in 1992 when he was living in Galway as an Erasmus exchange student should be considered if not among the best 10 surely among the first 20, but there is no sign of it!!! I remind you that The Quays Pub qualified for the quarter final thanks to that goal, even though the same team was defeated 3-0 by the Hibernian Pub in the following match.
Max Giacomelli is still a good skillfull italian centre forward despite his 42 years of age, even though he's better known for his amazing popularity among women!
MaxGiacomelli, Pistoia, Italy
I have to say that the list is funny...who the hell is Morton Peto Betts? and Jimmy Glass? The comic thing is that the most important goal in the history of English football...wasn't a goal. Anyway, more than 40 years without winning are tough to deal with, so we'll forgive you.
Carlo, London,
so, the nr.1 goal is a goal that has been proved not to be a goal. if i didn't know the english great sense of humor I would describe your list with just one word: ridiculous; but then I would be proved wrong as the profound competence and knowledge come out when quoting Ian Porterfield and Jimmy Glass, indeed scorers of more important goals than the ones scored by Grosso (Italy Germany 0-1), Maradona (England Argentina 0-2) etc. etc. I believe the fact you haven't won anything in the last 40 years played some sort of role in your list.
MaxGiacomelli, Pistoia, Italy
There's one goal by Ray Houghton that's missing. Ireland against England, 1988, Ireland's first ever match in a major competition, and we were given no chance at all. And then Houghton popped up with the winner, 1-0.
Another big ommission is that of Rivaldo, in his last game for Barcelona. Needing to beat Valencia to get to the Champion's League, Rivaldo scored two beauties only for Valencia to equalise them both. Then up pops Rivaldo with a sensational bicycle kick from outside the box, in injury time, to seal his hat-trick, seal the winner, seal a place in the Champion's League and in the process seal his team an extra £20m.
Des, Amsterdam,
So the goal that secured a British team's first European Cup (Stevie Chalmers in London) is deemed not as important as four other lesser triumphs for United and Liverpool, one of which was even won at Wembley?
A lot of nonsense. You're supposed to be experts, get it right.
Simon Orr, Prague,
It's nice to notice how impartial this table is, really.
You can use it at school to explain the concept of 'revisionism-negationism'.
Giorgio, Milan, Italy
This list is a joke... isn´t it?
There is a world outside... "Times" dont have time to watch ESPN?... England is the father of football but is too old to remember goals like Maradona´s, specially on 1986´s World Cup... Falkland war is a different matter than a football match... I believe more in FIFA than "Times". Blatter is english? He said that Maradona´s second goal was the best of history...
Pedro, RÃo Tercero, Córdoba, Argentina
Mark Robinsâ goal for Manchester United against Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup 3rd round in Jan 1990 that saved Alex Ferguson his job. Remember, hoards of United fans were calling for his head and this was the game he had to win or face the sack.
Also, a bit off topic, but the most influential miss was Robbie Fowler on the last day of the season a few years ago. Had he scored the penalty against Boro then City would have gone into Europe instead of McLarenâs team. The following season Boro wouldnât have had that UEFA Cup run and McLaren probably wouldnât have been given the England job and we might have a decent manager now. Cheers for nothing Robbie.
Irwin Fletcher, Dubai,
hallo?!Geoff Hurst's goal the most important in football history? it wasn't goal!!!!!!!!!!!!
carlo, bristol, avon
What about Giggs goal in FA cup semi v Arsenal or Cantonas goal v Sunderland!!!
Robbo, Peterborough, England
I think you are missing Maradona ´s second gol against England en Mexico 86 world cup. Don´t ya think so? excellent gol and pritty important.
Armando, Buenos Aires, Argentina
The most important goal was when my mother played for the top end of our street against the bottom end of our street. It was 3-3 and a about ten seconds to go. The ball was lobed from half way and my mam connected perfectly, just before the ball was about to connect with ground, to hammer it past their goalie. Dave (New Zealand) but still an LFC scouse.
dave wilson, Mount Maunganui , New Zealand
Entry #47 is proof that this list should have been named 'Significant English Goals'. Where's the importance of a goal in a friendly? It was only significant statistically-speaking... since this list is nothing but about importance. Where's Solskjaer's winner against Bayern? If the equiliser is #2...!!!
Robert, Gharghur, Malta
I dont believe it...! not even a goal from Maradona is in this list..surely the goal where he dribbled and sitted the whole England team in Mexico 86 is the worlds number one..
Berwick rangers ?? Luton town??
Mark Dorà , Reggio Emilia, Italy
Roberto Carlos' free kick in Le tournoi that moved so much in the air.
Blew everyone away, & maybe changed ball technology??
brian, london, UK
45 - Joe Payne's tenth: Ten goals in a match of third division on 1936 ?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
Look at record of goals in international tournaments :
A) Archie Thompson: 13 goals in Australia - American Samoa 31-0 in a World Cup qualifier in 2001.
Or at least:
B) 10 goals - Sophus Nielsen - Denmark - 1908 Olympics
C) 10 goals - Gottfried Fuchs - Germany - 1912 Olympics
D) 5 goals - Oleg Salenko - Russia - 1994 World Cup Finals
Giuseppe, Napoli, Italy
Boys, him(her) estan you lacking four goals, that of Maradona, of messi to the getafe (seemed to that of Maradona) and the javier Zanetti in the world 1998, and of gift I send you that of Maradona with the head against you in the world 1986
marcos, cordoba, Argentina
In accordance with the method you outlined at the beginning surely Pablo Escobar's own goal in 1994 should rank highly on this list. In it's own tragic way that goal had a much larger impact on the history of football than most others.
Also how ridculously ethnocentric it is to have good old Geoff at number one.. Give me a break and don't patronize us by saying that a global perspective has been taken when compiling the list. Maradona's absense says it all
Aron, Toronto, Canada
Ther´s a certain goal made by a little fellow called Diego Armando Maradona in the Azteca Stadium, Mexico. It was in '86 World Cup, remember? Final result: Argentina 2, England 1. The 2nd goal is the best one ever made. Your incredible pain every time you see it is a sorry excuse for not including it on the list. Surrender to the facts, there was no one better boys.
Diego Fernández, Córdoba, Argentina
How many of you have missed the point of the list entirely? A good majority of you and i thought Times readers were supposed to be intelligent!
It is not the 50 BEST goals but the 50 MOST IMPORTANT goals , there is a big difference.
Read the title before posting!
Nick, Thrapston, England
I think .....the maradona's goal isn`t the best in the world???? England isn´t play in the mundial the 86´s ???
I have a video, you can watch this the address:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUpSNrC7Bxg
raul , cordoba, argentina
hello, I dont know which criteria you followed to select these goals... I agree that some of them were very important...but forgetting the Best Goal Ever in 1986 by Maradona ... Not to mention other terrific goals scored by Van Basten, Cantona, Raul, Romario, Messi ...
England, you have good players, good league but tons of proud and a terrible bad memory..
Carlos, Dubai, UAE
And where it is in these ranking Maradona's goal to England in the 1986 World cup??????????????? Is the best goal ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Joost, Amsterdam, Netherlands
Any goal of Maradona??
The second in Argentina - England (mexico '86 )??
Diego, madrid, spain
have you ever seen van basten's goal in EURO 88's final? or rijkard's goal against benfica in the champions' league 89/90?
Alex, milan, italy
There is no doubt this list is evidently silly. But its total absence of method and coherency is astonishing!
If you put Schiavo's goal in the 1934 World Cup Final won by Italy then you should put every decisive goal scored in every World Cup Finals, or not?
Why not, for example, Brehme's goal in the 1990 final against Argentina and why not Kempes' goal against Holland in 1978 or Tardelli's goal in 1982 against Germany?
Who wrote this list, Mr. Bean?
Reno, Pistoia, Italy
not surpriesed that the country of Mr. Bean could produce such a list. they're both hilarious!
Piero, Firenze, Italy
You are crazy....your "englishness" is obvious to the hole world....
You should be a little more realistic and recognize that you are far away from being a competitive football team...Your only asset is all the monney you have to buy south american talent, because it s a fact that you don t have it...
Frank, Santiago, Chile
The Geoff Hirst goal only rocked England, not the whole world.
Mike, Oldham,
Jamie, exeter, UK
"Maradonna's hand ball goal was very significant, and maybe should be included. His second goal is very overrated"
"His second goal is very overrated" ja ja ja ja
This joke is more funny than the list.
pedro, caracas, venezuela
Mark Hughes equaliser for Man Utd against Crystal Palace FA Cup Final.
Utd won the replay and a certain Alex Ferguson held on to his job won the Cup Winners Cup the following year and won and won and won......
Brian Jupp, Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire
I cannot belive where Maradonna's goals have gone and Gerrard v Olympiakos to make it 3-1, Gerrard's first against Milan to spark the greatest comeback of all time and Gerrard's 35 yard strike against West Ham in the FA Cup Final, this is ridculous
Arka, Sheffield,
Hurst second wasn't a legit goal. Only obtuse englishmen remember that goal.
And leaving out Maradona's 2nd against England only discredits your list. That goal is universally recognized as the best, voted by fifa.....but......oh..it was against England!!!!
And really, you leave out Michael Owens St Ettiene goal against Argentina but include Michael Thomas????? Really!!!! That Owens goal was better than any on this list anyway!
They say that 'pride proceedeth the fall'..........................
Charlie, Sydney , Australia
Don´t you remember Diego Maradona´s goal in 1986 against England? Fifa considers it one of the best goals in history... and you can´t deny Maradona is and was one of the best players ever.. you didn´t include it because it still hurts!!!
Noelia, Rio Ceballos, Argentina
Zola's goal was so sublime that it was shown one frame at a time on TV and in the newspapers just to show what exactly happened.
Bill Humphries, Clacton on Sea,
If Withe and Roberston can be on the list why not Trevor Francis for Forest against Malmo?
AP, Wellington, New Zealand
I think the list has a great error. I would know why the second goal from Argentina to England in Mexico 1986 doesn´t exist in it?. Maradona made the best goal in football's history. That's bad?
Agustin SF, Ushuaia, Argentina
You, English guys, are the usual shameless sciovinists....
How can you pretend to make a list of the best goals of world football history having 35 out of 50 goals coming from the Premiership? Hey, guys, d'you know every country has its own football championship? Next time just call the list 'The 50 Best English League Goal', that would make more sense... You're such a joke, guys...
It is hard to make those kind of charts, especially to find criterias to express a not condionated judgment. I know this can be even harder for people who invented a sport but still can't dominate in it... Cure your frustration watching some proper football, mates... Italian in Amsterdam
Stefano Bison, milano, italy
This is CRAZY! Where are Maradona goals against England in 86?And Zidane, Grosso,etc...How is i tpossible that England that didn't win a single tournament during the last 40 years has so many goals on this list?
Falkland war is over...try to be less nationalist next time!!!
Filippo, London,
Charisteas' winner in the Euro 2004 final surely deserves a mention.
The fact that Greece won a major tournament was not only one of the biggest shocks in living memory, but also highlighted the emergence of the so-called smaller football nations in recent years.
Plus, it made Cristiano Ronaldo cry. Which we all enjoyed!!
Andy, Wolverhampton,
What about Mark Lazarus' 81st minute goal in the 1967 League Cup Final at Wembley? Victory for Third Division QPR over First Division West Bromwich after being 2-0 down at half time. Surely the biggest domestic Cup Final upset in England.
Johnny Mac, Pinner, Middx, UK
Why I am not surprised!! Hurstâs goal was not even in!! You should talk to the editor of World Soccer magazine and ask him to provide you a copy of the e-mail that I sent him after the 2002 World Cup. In typical English fashion you are ignoring the rest of the world. I guess the goal scored in 1928 that you talk about it has not been forgotten in Rome, Paris, Belgrade, or Buenos Aires as well. How can you possibly exclude the 1986 Maradonaâs second goal against (which team was it, I forgotâ¦.???) from the list is beyond me. Your arrogance knows no bounds!!!
Henry Pagan, Toronto ,
The best goal in history?
Mexico City, June 22nd 1986.
Maradona starts from midfield and...
LookDown, Siena, Italy
Argentina-England at Mexico 86: with 11 kicks Diego Armando Maradona makes one of the most beautiful goal of all times...it's a fault or a skip?
Fabrizio, roma, italia
hurst's second was not a goal, it didn't cross the line.
rudy, london,
do you remember Van Basten's goal in EURO 88's final? or pippo inzaghi in 2003's champions' league against ajax at minute 91?
alex, milan, italy
The most important goal was the one that Ian St .John scored against Leeds in extra time that won Liverpool F.C.their first F.A. Cup. I will never forget the pride that at last we had won the elusive CUP. Old men had written to the local papers and club, saying that they were dying, and to die in peace they wanted to see L.F.C. win that cup. That was how important it was to those guys and all of us. What a home coming - ecstasy in the extreme.
Dave Wilson, Mount Maunganui, New Zealand
No. 38 Sammy Reid - Berwick Rangers 1 Rangers 0
Berwick Rangers were not 'amateurs' - they may play like that often enough but they were and are a professional team.
Queen's Park are the only amateur team in Scottish senior football.
Drew Carlyle, Prestwick, UK
But this is the classify of 50 most important goals of English football not of World football !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Giuseppe, Napoli, Italy
you forgot to put in the list the ciccino peppiniello goal against scapestrati united for the coppa del nonno final... it's a shame that almost every goal is made by an english team, this is a good demonstration of the tipic english objectivity...
corrado, rome, italy
Even from a purely English perspective there are some surprising omissions here. Surely Mark Robbinsâ winner for Manchester United against Nottingham Forest in the FA cup 3rd round that saved Ferguson's job and arguably therefore changed the whole course of English football history should be in the top five? Likewise Domaski's goal against England at Wembley in 1973 which saw off Sir Alf is also worth a mention?
Jimmy, Manchester, UK
this is clearly a joke! Thank you for some true comedy time...
Ale, Lausanne,
The first goal is a goal that was never scored...Brits try to teach the world, but when it comes to results they can only shut up. People should know that some 3 years ago Brits were asked: Who is the best music composer ever? Robbie Williams came first, Mozart third or fourth. Stick on Fish & Chips with Cappuccino, that's your best asset (!!!!!!!).
Mauro, Delft, Netherlands
Don't forget the best goal's Fabio Grosso 1 - 0 against the Germany in the last world cup............
Roberto, Napoli, Italia
Well, are we talking about english football or world football? It looks like the first answer is the right one. Frankly speaking it's strange indeed that 32 out of the 50 "most important" goals have been scored by british players or playing in british teams. Odd enough not seeing neither one gol scored by maybe the best talent in the world football that is Diego Armando Maradona. So i would change your headline: "32 most important BRITISH goals with some addition from the outside world".
Lorenzo Norfini, Firenze, Italy
Que adentro que la tienen ingleses...!!!
toto, Buenos Aires, Argentina
Superlative....Huge ...Brilliant capacity to select important goals...
one comment...the worst goal of Maradona should be on list...imagine the second goal against England at Mexico 86....I know about football...its the first time a listen of Geoff Hurst
David, Buenos Aires, Argentina
British humor.
Eduardo Wodehouse, Santiago, Chile
You look at the Top 10 and you realize what this list is about. I can't believe a decider in a World Cup (Burruchaga against Germany in 86) or a goal marking a turning point (Beckham's penalty against Argentina in WC'02 changed the fate of both teams) are less important goals than some of those mentioned there in the list. And I am dismayed neither of Maradona's goals in WC'86 were even mentioned. Either change the title of the article, the criteria or do a little bit more research.
Seb, Nottingham, UK
Rivaldo - 89th minute overhead scissor vs. Valencia in a head-to-head for the 4th CL spot on the eve of the season. True classic, worthy of a top 50!!
Sede, Budapest, Hungary
What about Ray Houghton's goal to secure a 1-0 victory in the world cup. That was a classic. It was also the moment when Phill Babb realised what it felt like to be on the wrong side of the post.
Christopher , Chelmsford, England
7 Jimmy Glass - CARLISLE 2 Plymouth Argyle 1????? i follow the premier league -i love manchester united- the argentinian league, the mexican league, the spanish league and the italian league, so is fair to say that i know a little about football. Then, how come a goal made by a guy i never heard off that plays in a team i never heard off against another team i never heard off is the 7th most important goal????????? Does the name "Maradona" ring a bell?
marcosdeto, buenos aires, Argentina
What hapend whit Maradona!!!!, "Better goal of the century!!!!. .... I know what is the problem... It was to England.
And the 44 (Gary Lineker - Argentina 2 ENGLAND 1) is more important? You are crazy!!!!
Christian, Valdivia, Chile
for english football lovers: Batistuta in Arsenal-Fiorentina '99
max, milan, italy
what!!!, no giggs fa cup goal v gooners, and no ole goal v b. munich, both treble year....unbelievable, you must have been living in a cave in 99/00 season!!!
scotty, los angeles, usa
pathetic english as usual....no mention of maradona's greatest goal against England in mexico, van basten in the EuroCup against USSR, Grosso's goal for Italy at the last World Cup against Germany and Zidane's piece of art in the Champions League final against Feyenoord....but I'm glad to see Dixie Dean's goal (by the way, who's he???).You poor losers, of course for a country that doesn't win much in such a long time, the british first division must be a real highlight......depressing!!!!!
jaco, london,
I cannot believe you have not included STEVEN GERRARD in the FA CUP FINAL 2006, final minute, suffering with cramp, scoring the most incredible 35 yard screamer to take the game into extra time. Please review this...
Dom, Sao Paulo,
Come on lads!!, what's with Zidane in UEFA Champions Final's, or Ronaldino or Messi in Barcelona aggainst Getafe, and last but not least, Maradona's goal in Mexico. I think you beter start to look outside British football history.
Francisco Tibis, Santiago, Chile
And what about Marcelo Salas first goal against England in 1998 friendly game at Wembley?? No words to describe it.
Andres, Iowa City, USA
the list is very stupid because most of the goals they are English
Daniel, Santiago, Chile/RM
yet another list without a giggs bias against United I think.
Daniel, Stourbridge,
Why Sheringham and not Solskjaer that doesn't seem right and to influence by recent games i.e the Derby goal in the play-off hardly any more important than whoever scores the winner this season.
Daniel, Stourbridge,
Maradonna's hand ball goal was very significant, and maybe should be included. His second goal is very overrated. Watch it on youtube and see the lethargy due to heat, altitude and fatigue and tell me that run would get through in other circumstance. Hoddle looked fit to drop, my gran could've rounded him at that point.
Jamie, exeter, UK
You forgot from your list Martha's goal against the United States in this week Pan American Games in Brazil.....
Henry Pagan, Toronto ,
Come on !!! what about the goal of Marcelo Salas (Chile vs. England) in Wembley (The cathedral of football???).... and Maradona, Rossi, Zidane, Nessi!!!! Your list is absollutelly ridiculous...
Nelson, santiago, chile
Jimmy Glass, Dixie Dean up Pele?
Funny
Crazy
Juan Guarello, Santiago de Chile, Chile
This list is unbelievably anglo- and euro-centric. And this was to be expected.
Manuel Aliaga, Charlotte, North Carolina, USA
Certainly not an accurate, objective or impartial list - in fact, I don't think any
