SVEN-GORAN ERIKSSON wants more signings at Manchester City after beating Tottenham to the signature of Bulgarian Martin Petrov from Atletico Madrid.
Winger Petrov has been a long-time target of Martin Jol the Spurs manager and was strongly fancied to move to White Hart Lane, but has signed a three-year contract at Eastlands after agreeing a £4.7 million fee.
Eriksson has so far refused to confirm that Nikola Zigic will be his next capture. Zigic, Racing Santander's 6ft 7in Serbian striker has been linked with a £13m move, just 12 months after joining the Spanish side. At least another six clubs have made firm enquiries, but sources at Santander have revealed that City's offer is the best they have received.
Arsenal's Justin Hoyte is on the wanted list of Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill as he looks to bolster his defensive resources at Villa Park.
Blackburn and Middlesbrough are both on standby after Bayern Munich revealed that Roque Santa Cruz will be allowed to leave. The Paraguayan has been omitted from a German League Cup tie and president Karl Heinz Rummenigge said: "I expect Roque to have left us by the weekend. Porto and a couple of English clubs are interested in him."
Another high-profile striker who could be on the move is Nicolas Anelka. Sammy Lee, the Bolton Wanderers manager, has indicated that the club will not stand in the way of the Frenchman if he wants to leave the Reebok and West Ham United are reported to be ready to pay £12 million and a hefty £90,000-a-week for the former Arsenal star and, interestingly, Manchester United might make a move as a stop gap for Carlos Tevez.
Sunderland manager Roy Keane expects to make up for his disappointment at the collapse of a £6m deal to sign Wigan's Leighton Baines by confirming the capture of West Bromwich Albion's Republic of Ireland international Paul McShane in the next seven days.
Newcastle United have ended their interest in McShane's team mate Curtis Davies after refusing to meet Albion's £8m price tag, but manager Sam Allardyce is resigned to losing Kieron Dyer. Dyer wants to move back closer to Ipswich, where his two young children live with their mother and Newcastle are ready to accept £6m.
Birmingham City are still hoping to salvage their bid to sign Hossam Ghaly from Tottenham today. More talks are planned with the Egyptian midfielder in a bid to reach a comprimise over personal terms, after agreeing a £3m fee, but manager Steve Bruce has virtually given up on the £6m deal to sign team mate Mido, because of contractual disputes.
Ramon Calderon, the Real Madrid president, hopes to complete the signing of Chelsea's Arjen Robben in the "next few days," despite noises from Stamford Bridge insisting that the Dutch international is staying at the club.
Middlesbrough hope to hold talks with Alan Smith over a possible move to the Riverside, after Manchester United gave them permission to open negotiations with the striker, but they will face competition from Everton and Aston Villa.
