Leighton Baines, the Wigan Athletic defender, was undergoing a medical and discussing personal terms at Everton today after the two clubs agreed a transfer fee.
Everton had an offer of £4 million plus Andy van der Meyde rejected last week but have beaten off competition from Newcastle United to sign the 22-year-old, who turned down the chance to join Sunderland earlier this summer.
Sam Allardyce, the Newcastle manager, has drafted in Villarreal full-back Jose Enrique for a reported £4.2m after admitting defeat in his chase to sign Baines.
Allardyce wants to follow up that transfer with a move for Seville’s Serbian central defender Ivica Dragutinovic for around £2.5m.
Aston Villa and Sunderland have been given permission to discuss personal terms with Hearts’ Scotland international goalkeeper Craig Gordon. Sunderland had an offer for Gordon rejected earlier this summer but have now reached agreement with the Scottish club. Villa are also set for talks with the player, 24, who has previously interested Arsenal.
Sunderland have confirmed they have made a bid for Tottenham Hotspur’s Egyptian striker Mido. Manager Roy Keane now wants to meet with the striker, 24, who had a move to Birmingham City break down earlier this summer. "He is a player I would like to bring to this club," Keane said. "All I want is the opportunity to speak to the lad. If it doesn't work out then we will move on."
Tottenham may put in another bid for midfielder Kieron Dyer with Newcastle United now wanting £8m. A deal with West Ham United fell through at the last minute last week and is unlikely to be revived.
Fulham’s spending spree could be set to continue with Portsmouth prepared to sell midfielder Gary O’Neil for £5m. Lawrie Sanchez is poised to move for the 24-year-old midfielder but could also face competition from Middlesbrough.
Blackburn Rovers, however, will resist Fulham’s latest attempts to sign striker Jason Roberts after turning down an offer earlier this summer.
El Hadji Diouf could be set to leave Bolton Wanderers after admitting he would like to move to French club Lyons. The Senegal international is determined to leave the Reebok Stadium in the wake of Allardyce’s departure for Newcastle this summer. Diouf’s agent, Alexandre Kristic, said: “He’s interested in Lyons.”
Billy Davies, the Derby County manager, is trying to inject some quality into his side ahead of the new season with a move for PSV Eindhoven’s £2.2 million-rated midfielder Mika Vayrynen. The Finland international has also been linked with Scottish club Rangers in the past.
Davies is also pondering whether to move for Portsmouth defender Andy O’Brien and Sheffield United striker Jonathan Stead, who had a spell on loan at Pride Park last season.
Manchester City have rejected Middlesbrough’s first approach for striker Giorgios Samaras. Gareth Southgate wants cover for Yakubu, who could leave before the transfer window closes, and wanted a loan deal with a view to a permanent transfer for the Greek forward. But despite a major recruitment drive this summer and doubts over Samaras’ long term future at Eastlands, City have rebuffed the initial offer.
James Morrison, the Middlesbrough midfielder, is in talks with West Bromwich Albion about a move to the Championship club and could complete the transfer today.

Congratulations to Everton manager David Moyes on capturing Leighton Baines today.
Moyes has a phenomenal track record in the transfer market - he's every chairman's dream, he doesn't waste cash like Houllier or spend millions on unknown foreiginers based purely on DVD evidence like Eriksson, he targets quality players carefully.
When he does bring players in, they invariably add to the quality of his first team - the likes of Tim Cahill, Mikel Arteta, Joseph Yobo, Joleon Lescott, Andy Johnson, Tim Howard, Phil Neville and Phil Jagielka have been transformed Everton from relegation dogfighters to European contenders, despite very tight budgets and a small squad.
Leighton Baines looks like being another piece in a jigaw that is fast taking shape.
After many years in the doldrums happy days are definitely back at Goodison Park.
Moyes for manager of the season again? It's not even started yet, but it's certainly worth an early wager.
