Dead certs
Lomana LuaLua has joined Olympiacos from Portsmouth for £2.9 million. The forward, who has signed a three-year deal, has scored 15 goals in 72 league matches since he made a permanent transfer to Fratton Park three years ago. LuaLua also played for Colchester United and Newcastle United in his nine years in England.
Harry Redknapp, the Portsmouth manager, has brought in two strikers this summer but is considering signing one more forward.
David Unsworth, the former Wigan Athletic defender, is expected to sign a one-year contract at Burnley today.
Decent bets
Arsenal have stepped up their interest in Yoan Gouffran after watching the Caen forward in the past two matches, but the London club have not made a formal offer for the 21-year-old. It has been suggested that Arsenal will sign him and then loan him back for the season.
Txiki Beguiristáin, the Barcelona sporting director, has said that Eidur Gudjohnsen will probably have to leave the club in order to play regularly. Barcelona agreed to sell the forward to West Ham United for £7 million, but Manchester City and Newcastle United are also interested. “To stay would not be the best decision,” Beguiristáin said.
Modeste M’Bami, the 24-year-old Cameroon player, has attracted interest from Birmingham City and Manchester City after the midfield player was told that he could leave Marseilles.
Lee Barnard, the 23-year-old Tottenham Hotspur forward, is set to be loaned to Crewe Alexandra until January.
Long shots
Mikaël Silvestre has said that he turned down a move to Newcastle. The Manchester United defender said that he was offered a three-year deal worth £35,000 a week after tax. “It was a beautiful contract but there is more to life than money,” he said. Silvestre also received approaches from Bordeaux and Aston Villa.
