There were further signs that nerves are beginning to fray at the Los Angeles Galaxy on Sunday evening when Alexi Lalas, the team’s general manager, complained that Major League Soccer (MLS) had sabotaged their chances of success by enforcing a ridiculous fixture list.
Lalas claims that MLS had attempted to maximise publicity, as well profits for its other teams, by giving the Galaxy more fixtures in the second half of the season, when David Beckham was expected to be playing.
However, the short recovery times between games have had an inevitable effect and the team were without seven injured players - Beckham included - in the 3-0 defeat away to the Colorado Rapids on Sunday evening. After a fifth successive defeat, the Galaxy have only a slim chance of qualifying for the play-offs.
“We sure as hell are not going to put up with another season like this,” Lalas said. “This ridiculous schedule that we have been saddled with in an effort to appease everybody, on and off the field, has taken its toll.
“We have bent over backwards to help everybody but the Galaxy. A lot of people have made a tremendous amount of money on the back of what the Galaxy, with David, has brought to their markets this year and I hope that they remember that. The travelling, the number of games, the lack of consistent scheduling - no other team has had to put up with that.”
Lalas has a point. Beckham made his first appearance for the club on July 21. Since the end of last month, the Galaxy have played eight matches, six of which involved long-distance trips to Dallas, Toronto, Washington DC, New York, New England and Denver. Their next four MLS games are at home, but from September 19, six of the next seven are away - in Salt Lake City, Kansas City, Columbus, Vancouver, Houston and Minneapolis.

The LA Galaxy schedule does look a little harsh when compared to Premier League schedules. Galaxy essentially have two games a week in the second half of the season - 4 games in the last ten days of July, 8 games in August, 8 games in September and 6 games over the first three weeks in October. That's 26 games in just over 12 weeks.
Compare that with the Premier league average of three or four games per month (except over Christmas). Of course, cup games and European competitions bring the average up but it's still not as busy as LA's fixture list.
Clive, Brussels,
I think that the recent performances of LA Galaxy just show what a foolhardy, mis-guided and short-sighted decision it was by David Beckham to move to the US. He should be playing in the Champions League and European club football. Instead he is in a third rate pub team. What a joke. I hope all the money was worth it, David:(

Is it just me or do others also feel their blood turning a little cold when they read statements like: ' A lot of people have made a tremendous amount of money on the back of what the Galaxy, with David, has brought to their markets this year...'
At Real Madrid there was always the suspicion that Beckham was more about marketing than football. At Galaxy there seems little doubt.
Bill, Sheffield,
My question is this- who put the gun to Alexi Lalas' head? I mean, why didn't LA Galaxy anticipate this problem and put up a fight BEFORE the schedule was announced. Lalas needs to look in the mirror and accept his fair share of blame.

Beckham is in the middle of a nightmare, no chance he will be able to sustain this for the next three months. He has made the biggest mistake of his career. Driven by Posh to play sub standard football when he could still be gracing La Liga.
Rowan Mills, Unna, Germany
While I agree with Mr. Lalas, I do believe that he and AEG knew only full well what would be in store. Yet I completely empathize with him since it was not a known certainty that Becks would sign until the very last "i" was dotted and "te" crossed. By then the schedule was set, but I sincerely doubt if it was in concrete in January.
Nevertheless, Laslas & AEG should have vehemently spoken up about the schedule. But, then again, the need to share the HDC w/Chivas, and the annual X-Games circus, plus the Interliga games, just where were Lalas, AEG, and of course we can't forget Frank Yallop?
And speaking of the coach or manager, yes, there is strong sentiment with the fans that there needs to be a change. Jeez, when Steve Sampson was having problems, Lalas and AEG didn't waste much time in getting rid of him. Yallop may have won an MLS championship, still this does not a coach with quality players make. Bring Klinsi in before its too late.
Coach Ricardin, Los Angeles, California, US
Lalas is right, everybody else is making a ton of money off the Galaxy obtaining Beckham without having to invest anything or have brutal schedules. Yes, bringing Beckham to the US offers great exposure to the MLS, but all teams in the MLS should be paying a premium for that exposure because they all benefit from it. I'm not saying they should all be pitching in for Beckham's high salary, but they should definately be paying the Galaxy a percentage of their increased ticket sales! Why should the Galaxy have all the burden?
Go Rapids!!!
Stacey, Louisville, CO
Please, the Galaxy were crap during the first half of the season when everybody was rested. Give me a break.

He's so right.

But there are other reasons for the Galaxy's poor performance; specifically, the woeful roster assembled by the team, including via senseless trades.
Temujin, Astoria, New York
Is Lalas the President /General Manager of the club or is he an empty suit? Unfortunately, he is the latter. Where was he when the league proposed the ridiculous schedule? Did he not sign off on all of the useless friendly matches? Is he not approving the player/personnel moves as well? The truth is that he is woefully unprepared for his current position and should do the Galaxy, MLS and American soccer a favor and resign.
