Sunderland sealed promotion to the Barclays Premier League as champions with a 5-0 win over Luton Town on the final day of last season. Their return to Kenilworth Road last night was a little less enjoyable: Roy Keane’s side were humbled 3-0 by their opponents from Coca-Cola League One in the second round of the Carling Cup.
David Bell opened the scoring with a free kick after 13 minutes and Paul Furlong, who will be 39 in October, doubled the advantage with a lob shortly before the break. Greg Halford was sent off for the visiting team with half an hour to go, receiving a second yellow card for deliberate handball, and then Furlong made sure of victory. “It’s a massive disappointment, the biggest Ive had here,” Keane said. “But I’ve only been a manager for two minutes. If anything, this makes me more determined.”
Kevin Blackwell, the Luton manager, said: “I think that went a long way towards repaying the fans for the 5-0 result. Their winning the Championship here 5-0 was like somebody winning the lottery and coming into your house to celebrate when you’ve got a losing ticket.”
David Nugent scored his first goal for Portsmouth since his move from Preston North End last month in the 3-0 win over Leeds United at Fratton Park, but it could be his last. Harry Redknapp, the Portsmouth manager, would not deny that Nugent – signed for an initial £4.75 million last month – could be sold on to Derby County to finance a bid for a more prolific forward. “I like [Nicolas] Anelka [of Bol-ton Wanderers] but I don’t think it will be him,” Redknapp said. “When you need to raise money, sometimes you have to sell players you don’t want to.”
Nugent converted a cross from John Utaka six minutes from time. Noé Pamarot had given Portsmouth the lead just before the break and doubled it after 80 minutes. Afterwards, Gus Poyet, the Leeds assistant manager, launched a verbal attack on Andy D’Urso, the referee. “I’d like to see him not referee Leeds any more,” he said. “He has got a problem with me and Dennis [Wise, the manager]. It wasn’t just tonight. He can’t forget things from the past when we were players and he has kept doing it.”
The suspected broken right leg suffered by Kieron Dyer overshadowed West Ham United’s 2-1 win away to Bristol Rovers. The injury means that West Ham have now lost a second right-sided midfield player within a month – Julien Faubert, the France international signed from Bordeaux for £7.25 million this summer, is ruled out until after Christmas in the wake of rupturing his Achilles tendon before the season started.
Alan Curbishley, the West Ham manager, said: “After this, you do wonder why you put a strong side out in the League Cup. The Bristol Rovers player [Joe Jacobson] has got to look at his tackle – he lost control and my players saw that he lashed out, catching Kieron in a difficult area. Now with Kieron, Freddie Ljungberg and Julien Faubert injured, we’ve got £20 million-worth of players out.”
Curbishley could take no comfort from a couple of well-taken goals by Craig Bellamy, but Paul Trollope, the Rovers manager, came to the defence of Jacobson, saying: “From our point of view, it was a foul, but any suggestion that Joe was malicious is very wide of the mark.”
Wigan Athletic may be third in the Premier League, but they were embarrassed at home by Hull City last night. Stuart Elliott’s goal after 31 minutes was enough to give the Championship side victory. Bottom of the elite division, there was more woe for Derby County as they went out on penalties at home to Blackpool. Kaspars Gorkss levelled the scores at 2-2 deep into extra time for the Championship side and they prevailed 7-6 from the spot.
Morecambe, the Football League newcomers, claimed the scalp of Wolverhampton Wanderers, who went out 3-1 after extra time. Charlton Athletic were given a huge scare by Stockport County. The visiting team from League Two were 2-0 down, but they turned the tie on its head with three goals in 15 second-half minutes before Lloyd Sam made it 3-3 and Patrick McCarthy hit a 90th-minute winner.
Life was much less stressful for Aston Villa, who cruised past Wrexham 5-0 at the Racecourse Ground.
