Newcastle United expect to complete the £2 million signing of Abdoulaye Faye, the Bolton Wanderers defender, before the transfer window closes. Sam Allardyce, the Newcastle manager, said: "Abdoulaye is in Newcastle for a medical and we expect the deal to go through in the next 24 hours."

Middlesbrough have confirmed they are interested in signing Georgios Samaras, the Manchester City forward. Benfica also want the Greece international player, who is believed to want to stay in the Premier League.

Middlesbrough also revealed they are the latest club to have been offered the chance to sign Adriano, the Inter Milan attacker linked with West Ham United after Arsenal turned down a season-long loan for him.

Dynamo Kiev's attempt to sign their former forward Andriy Shevchenko on loan from Chelsea has been rebuffed by the player's agent Stephen Curnow, who said: "It will not happen because a player of Andrei's calibre doesn't want to go on loan."
