Portsmouth expect to complete the sale of striker David Nugent to Derby County before the transfer deadline, provided a pay-off can be agreed with the player. The South Coast club have signed Glen Johnson, the Chelsea defender, in a £4 million deal and hope to push through a deal for Eidur Gudjohnsen, the Barcelona forward, for £7m.
Fulham have signed Portsmouth's Serbian defender Dejan Stefanovic in a £1m deal after fighting off competition from Rangers.
Everton are holding talks with Juan Roman Riquelme, the Argentina playmaker, over the possibility of a one-year loan deal. Riquelme, 29, is unsettled at Villarreal and is keen to move to the Barclays Premier League. The Merseysiders have already signed Thomas Gravesen, their former midfield player, on a season-long loan deal.
Middlesbrough have offered a trial to Alessandro Pistone, the former Everton defender, and could sign the Italian on a one-year deal. The Teessiders are also hopeful of completing a swoop for Manchester City's out-of-favour forward Georgios Samaras.
Blackburn Rovers are reportedly keeping tabs on the Tom Huddlestone, the Tottenham Hotspur midfield player, although the north Londoners are apparently unwilling to sell.
Birmingham City will move for Fulham's unsettled midfielder Papa Bouba Diop after failing to sign Peter Luccin, the Atletico Madrid player. Diop is expected to cost around £3m and on the subject of Luccin, Steve Bruce, the Birmingham manager, said: "I thought it was a done deal on Wednesday. But unfortunately it's drifted away from us. He's the one we've chased all week and last week, but the player's decided to stay in Spain and sign for Zaragoza. It's a big blow to us."
Manchester City want to solve their shortage of strikers by signing the out-of-favour Wigan Athletic player Henri Camara. Sven-Goran Eriksson, the manager, reportedly wants to sign the Senegalese for £3m, although he could offer Darius Vassell in part-exchange. Wigan, meanwhile, have completed a season-long loan deal for the Charlton Athletic striker Marcus Bent, while Caleb Folan has moved to Hull City in a £1m deal.
Alan Pardew, the Charlton manager, has also loaned out Amdy Faye to Rangers. The 30-year-old completed his move to the Ibrox club in the early hours of the morning and is eligible to play in the Uefa Champions League, where Rangers will face Barcelona, Lyon and Stuttgart in the group stage.
Wolverhampton Wanderers hope to sign Shefki Kuqi, the Crystal Palace striker, after making an official enquiry.
