Juande Ramos has told Seville that he wants to quit as their manager and join Tottenham Hotspur as a replacement for Martin Jol, according to the Spanish newspaper Marca.
The Spanish club have said they plan no announcements on Ramos's position but it is understood that Jose Maria Del Nido, the Seville chairman, has called an emergency meeting with the coach to clarify the situation. Jol and his assistant Chris Hughton were sacked last night.
Marca reports that Ramos wants to accept a deal worth an annual €7 million
(£4,900,000) over four years, though other sources suggest that his salary
will be £6 million a year. Damien Comolli, the Tottenham sporting director,
has given Ramos a now-or-never ultimatum even though his contract at Seville
does not expire until the summer.
Ramos, 53, has won five trophies with Sevilla, including back-to-back Uefa
Cups and the Copa del Rey. He took training as normal on Friday after a
brief chat with Del Nido. A club spokesman said: "Juande Ramos is still
coach of Sevilla FC and the club has no announcements planned at the moment."
However, Luis Fabiano, the Seville forward, admitted the reports were unsettling the players. He told the club's website that the players did not know where Ramos' future lay, saying: "There is comment, speculation but nothing concrete. We saw the newspapers in the dressing room - but no more than that.
"In Brazil it happens midway through the season but if someone else were to come in, we would have time to adapt. It's not good news but what can we do if there is a change of coach?" Asked if he had spoken to Del Nido, Fabiano said: "The president said 'hello' - we did not speak about anything [else]."
