Geoff Hurst believes England hosting the World Cup in 2018 would be “100 times bigger” than 1966 and help to get disillusioned supporters back behind the national team.

Hurst famously scored the hat-trick which clinched England’s solitary World Cup victory on home soil, the only occasion the tournament was held in this country, some 41 years ago.

But he thinks even that could be put in the shade if England beat off competition from the likes of China and Russia to stage the finals in 11 years’ time, after the Football Association yesterday confirmed they would be bidding.

“It was a huge event for England when we hosted the World Cup in 1966 but getting the tournament in 2018 would be 100 times bigger,” Hurst said. “You only have to look at the level of coverage football gets now in this country and the fervour surrounding the game.

“The sport is now 100 times bigger and is covered in 100 times greater depth. More reporters cover an England qualifier these days than went to the 1966 World Cup final.”

“Without doubt it would be great for the country and the game to have the 2018 World Cup and I think everything is in place to succeed with this bid.”

Following their difficulties under Steve McClaren, and the possibility that England will fail to qualify for next year’s European Championships, Hurst also believes it could be just what the national team need to win back public support.

“I think a successful World Cup bid would get far more people behind England again,” he said. “With no qualifiers needed, the conflict of interest with clubs would be reduced straight away and it may change the attitudes of some players.”
