World Cup 2010 qualifying draw in full
England have been drawn against Croatia in the 2010 World Cup qualifiers, just days after Slaven Bilic's side ensured England's failure to make it to next year's European Championship finals.
Wednesday's 3-2 defeat at Wembley was an all-time low for the nation's team and proved to be the end of Steve McClaren's reign as head coach, with the FA sacking him the following morning.
Croatia beat England both home and away during the Euro 2008 qualifiers but Bilic, the Croatia manager, admitted that was the side he least wanted to be paired with again.
"I was saying 'Oh no!' [when I saw the draw]," Bilic said. "Everyone in Croatia was saying 'give us England again' but I wanted to avoid England.
"It is a very, very hard draw because they are by far the best team from the second pot.
"The only team I wanted to avoid was England. We are not afraid of them but they have got a terrific team and brilliant players. They should gel and they are going to gel."
The other teams making up group Six are Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Andorra.
"It's not only England but we have the Ukraine too," Bilic added. "That's a couple of teams who were in the quarter-finals of the last World Cup and both didn't qualify for Euro 2008. They will do anything to get to the World Cup in 2010. It's the most difficult group to be honest."
Northern Ireland face top-seeds Czech Republic as well as Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia and San Marino, and their striker Warren Feeney admitted: "The Czech Republic are a real force in the world and Poland are always round about, but we're full of confidence going into it.
"Expectations levels have risen, we were gutted not getting qualification [to Euro 2008] but the whole of Northern Ireland was buzzing at where we finished.
"We always play better against big teams, we've proven at Windsor Park that we can beat anyone, and it doesn't come much bigger than the Czech Republic. Hopefully we can pick up a few things on the road - we're confident."
Fifa announced on Friday that England would not be among the top seeds for today's draw in Durban for the tournament in South Africa after they slipped to 12th in the latest world rankings.
Scotland will face Holland, Norway, FYR Macedonia and Iceland in their five-team group. The Scots were placed in the smallest of the nine European groups, group Nine. The other eight groups all feature six teams.
Alex McLeish's side agonisingly missed out on qualifying for the Euro 2008 finals, with Scotland's last appearance at a major summer tournament came at the 1998 World Cup in France.
John Toshack's Wales side have been pitted against World Cup 2006 semi-finalists Germany in group Four. They also face Russia - the other side who qualified for Euro 2008 ahead of England - as well as Finland, Azerbaijan and Liechtenstein. The Welsh are familiar with Finland, having faced them in Euro 2004 qualifying.
Managerless Republic of Ireland have been drawn in group Eight alongside reigning World champions Italy. They will also face Bulgaria, Georgia, Montenegro and Cyprus, to whom they suffered an humiliating 5-2 defeat against during their unsuccessful qualifying campaign for Euro 2008.
The nine group winners will progress to South Africa, the best eight runners-up enter two-leg ties, with four going through, and one unfortunate does not even get that chance.

Hmm as an Englishman, I would be pretty pleased with the draw...other than Greece, Croatia would be the easiest of the top seeds to play against...in reality Croatia's two wins over us in E08 were by default...the default being that we had the most cretinous, incompetent, thick, turdish, imbecilic, hopeless 'manager' that you or the world could never hope to see. Now he's gone, we should recover some sense of normality in the national team...ie qualifying impressively and then getting knocked out in the QFs
Matt, London, UK
Itâs a beautiful game and what a fantastically nerve wracking and exciting game of football England playing Croatia will be. With good management, a quality first choice X1 and some bloody good, fortune, Iâm confident.
Jake Williams, Toronto, Canada
Do not worry my English friends, both Croatia and England r going into finals. Daniel from Croatia...
Danijel, Zagreb, Croatia
PFFT, You think the new England team will struggle to win home/away games? You are going to be eating your words when it comes to the world cup. Enjoy Euro 2008 while it lasts Croatia - because you are not going to be lucky with England next time around.
5ytege, Newcastle,
jiiipiiiiiiiiiiiiii....Croatia newer downpreform when we have a hard draw. Havent you learned that already? We are in trouble when we have to play Romania, Bulgaria or Belgium..England, Germany and Spain are a treet for us.

I wish England not to forget the words of Croatia national hymn before the next game

i think everyone knows on paper england have the best team in that group by far i think that with a new manager to point us in the right direction we should qualify easy

i have expected this draw..and it s not easy for us but i think that england and ukraine are not better than we.. we play now really well and the first place in this group will come..McClaren bigg hay from Zagreb and Orasje:)
Ilija, Orasje, BiH
The Croatian team is a TEAM. That's one of the strong reasons why they beat the divided English side, in England no less. I'm not at all surprised by their success and I think Croatia will continue to be a major force in European football. So I think Slaven Bilic's worries about the 2010 draw are out of respect for the demoralized English side...but I don't know how worried he really is.

We're going to conquer Wembley... Again...

Once again England becomes over confident. England are an average team. Deep down Croatia won't mind playing England. The ties with Ukraine are not easy, and they always seem to buckle against smaller nations. I think England will be third in the group.
dyzalot, UK ,
My call is, Croatia first, Ukraine second , England third.
Bili, Pula/Croatia, Croatia
This is a perfect draw for England. There will be a complete overhaul of the adminstration and management of the England team in place before the spring of 2008. Whilst Croatia did well against England and are the rightful team to be in EM 2008, this is a watershed for England. In spite of what people in other countries believe, there are many, many talented , capable and experienced footballers in England, both young and capable of playing at the highest level.
Croatia will be looking for play off qualification this time around, the shoddy approach since Sven left will be eradicated.
Look out, England's three lions will bounce back with a roar.
The axis has shifted from Man United, where the only thing that counts is money, to Man City. Man City will be supplying at least five or six of the squad for 2010.

same procedure like in the just enden qual.
Means two east europ. countrys will catch on.
England can hope for 2012 in Poland and Ukraine
Tom, Zagreb,
too sad, we'd like to have england in our group!
Greetings from Germany ;-)
knut, berlin, germany
England might make it through on friendly refs at home and one or two judgmental penalties called for them in places like Ukraine and Belarus.
The market won't allow an average england team not making it to two consecutive big events. Not fair, but thats life.
My call is England first, Croatia second, Ukraine close third
Tom, Zagreb,
Oh no, again Croatia!
Paoul, London, England
