David Beckham wants to gain World Cup revenge on Croatia after they eliminated England from the qualifying stages of 2008 European Championships.
Beckham, currently in Sydney with the Los Angeles Galaxy, also confirmed that he wants to reach 100 caps for his country as he has the “experience and the passion” needed in international football.
England were yesterday drawn in the same group as Croatia for the qualifying stages of the 2010 World Cup, along with Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Andorra.
“It’s a group that there’s still some very tough teams in there and obviously Croatia again. We have to try to get our own back,” Beckham said. “It’s important that we go into the qualifiers with a positive frame of mind.”
The former England captain was dropped by Steve McClaren at the start of his regime as manager but recalled during the Euro 2008 qualification campaign. Beckham, 32, hopes he retains his place in the squad.
“I know how things can change so quickly in the national team - eight months ago if someone would have said to me that I’d be getting another cap and playing for England I probably wouldn’t have believed them,” he said. “But I was brought back in and I got up to 99 caps and I want to go on from there.
“I believe that I can, I’m 32 years old, but I believe that I’ve got the experience and the passion still to play for my country. I hope that when the next manager comes in that he gives me that chance.”
