Sixty injections! I knew Müller-Wohlfarth didn’t mess around when it came to needles, but even though I was asking for them I’m not sure I was expecting 60.
I’ve been trying to get over a few injuries so I thought it was time I paid a visit to Munich to see German football’s medicine man, Dr Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfarth. Aside from having possibly the most German name in the entire world, Müller-Wohlfarth is the doctor for the Germany team as well as Bayern Munich.
Although my problems were specifically in the shoulder and groin, Müller-Wohlfarth’s aim was to release the spasms in my back. So he set about giving me these homoeopathic injections to relax the really deep muscles that can’t be reached by massage or stretching. Anyway, it seems to have worked because I’m back in training after two months out.
But, just as importantly, I also think Müller-Wohlfarth’s magic helped me win the week’s major sporting event — the first Folding Bike Monopoly Race.
Let me explain. I work with a local Prince’s Trust group and we wanted to do something different to raise some money. It stemmed from the stick I was getting for riding my folding bike. So I threw down the gauntlet and told them that my folding bike and I would beat a team of them in a race around all the sites on the London edition of Monopoly.
So we got sponsors for both teams to raise some money and off we went — me and the bike against a team of seven of them. Any form of public transport was allowed, but no taxis, cars or rickshaws. And they had to stay together as a group. The bike was gold dust, though. Starting from Waterloo, my first stop was Old Kent Road and with my ruthlessly efficient planning I was back at Waterloo within four hours, all 26 stops done, way ahead of the other team.
I’ve always said that I wanted to make folding bike racing an Olympic sport so I can compete in 2012. But I now think the event should be Folding Bike Monopoly Board Racing. I can see it now, as I step up to the rostrum to collect my gold medal, little bike neatly packed away in a bag on my back, the German anthem playing . . . Either that or I’ll become a courier.
