The Football Association laid off two England coaches yesterday in the strongest indication yet that a new head coach could be appointed within days. Brian Barwick, the chief executive, notified Steve Round and Bill Beswick, both assistants to Steve McClaren, that their contracts had been terminated with immediate effect.
The FA’s urgency confirms that Barwick expects to have the new man in place quickly, although he will not go to the board until he is certain that his preferred choice wants the job. José Mourinho appears to be the most popular candidate and the former Chelsea manager fuelled speculation when, after being asked if he could be England head coach, he said: “Why not?”
Reports that Mourinho had flown to England proved unfounded when he appeared at his home in Setúbal, Portugal. He said that he had planned to visit London but was put off by the barrage of media speculation.
“I am in Portugal,” Mourinho said. “I would like to be in London with my family for a couple of days, but nobody would believe the reason why I would be there - to see friends and family and do some Christmas shopping. So to try to stop the speculation, I decided not to go and stay here. It is sunny and beautiful.” He also denied using the FA as a vehicle for a return to club management and was said to be upset by the suggestions.
The FA also vigorously denied that Fabio Capello had been interviewed, although the Italian is also known to be a leading contender. Marcello Lippi and Jürgen Klinsmann have also been strongly considered by the FA and the fact that all four foreign candidates are out of work will mean that Barwick can move quickly. The speed at which the chief executive is working suggests that Martin O’Neill’s statement ruling himself out is being taken at face value by the FA.

If the FA appoint Jose Mourinho as the new England coach, then England will win the World Cup in South Africa in 2010.....
Randall Owen, Brynna, Wales
Having seen the documentaries on Jose Mourinho I have to say that he would be the right man for the job. He is not afraid to fail. As far as he is concerned he cannot fail in anything he does. Some people regard that as arrogant but his single mindedness and the determination to win plus the fact he would not be afraid to drop the so called big name players if they are not up to the job makes him the ideal man.
A lot of the old guard will insist the England manager must be english - why ? Mourinho has a passion for the game and has said he loves England and London and I expect he has more passion for England than McClaren, Graham Taylor etc had for their own country. McClaren wouldn't even get wet for the cause !!!
Anthony Bradshaw, Liverpool, Merseyside
After the hideous disaster which was the Maclaren managership it is about time we had someone with a proven track record who will return England to the glory days; in this regard Mourinho has proved himself to be the "special one". Mourinho is a man who is controversial which is perfect for the poison chalice which is the England manager's job. Finally as regards the xenophobic comments suggesting that only an Englishman can do the job I think you'll find there hasn't been a capable Englishman since Alf Ramsey!! MOURINHO FOR THE JOB AND ENGLAND FOR THE WORLD CUP!!

So here we are again, awaiting the appointment of yet another saviour of English football! How many times do we have to watch the National team's inability to string more than two passes to-gether,to run intelligently off the ball and to look comfortable on the ball before we realise that our players are short of ability and creativity. They should possess these talents long before they reach the International stage leaving the coach to decide tactics, attitude and mind-set etc. It's too late for him to teach them basic skills and too few of them possess these.
All Croatia's recent Wembley goals came from clever inter-passing through the inside-forward positions.I don't recall them once relying on the lottery of the long high cross into the penalty box. They were a delight to watch compared to our so predictable ineptitude.
Denis Cox, Shepperton, England
Mourinho is exactly the man england need. we have the players they just need to be taught how to be winners. i just think england dont deserve him.
simon, london, england
Mourinho is a wonderful manager. He brought Chelsea up the ranks in a hard time and I'm sure he will bring England up and through into South Africa.
Jake, Postwall, Georgia
what conceivable evidence is there that a manager with a 'passion for England' would be any use? What would he do - read Churchillian speeches in the changing rooms? No wonder we lose games.
steve fenton, Bristol, uk
I'm one of those pre-premiere league snobs who can't abide the strategy of Chealsea of 'trying' to buy trophys.
That said... (and openening myself up for multiple responses)What can go wrong with Mourinho? He won't bow to player pressure so can handle big personalities, has a some good stategic one/two touch football style of play... and hey.. It will at least be ammusing! PLus, we might actually genuinley contend for something.
RL, Surrey,
Barlow should go, he's the one who gave us Mac and let the team place on a 4th rate pitch
mark, Bournemouth, England
An England team should have an English Manager. Not someone who has no passion for the nation however much pasion they may have for the game.
David Brown, Durham, ENGLAND
we need another angle to our team, maybe Mourinho or a south American manager. But lets get it done, i think the FA boss should be sacked to for the choice of manager.
matt, basildon, uk
I don't think that Mourinho is the right man for the job.
I think is Fabio Capello the right man .
carmine, venice, italy
Mourinho would be a great choice as England manager. A great record of success at club level with a great ability to play the media.
He saw how Sven was treated and also was here during the World Cup when he will have seen just what the football loving public hope for from their national team.
If we go English - I would say Harry Redknapp. If we go foreign - Jose all the way. It might be crash and burn, but what a trip and, who knows, a Portuguese manager might just deliver us the World Cup.
Richard B, Plymouth,
Mourinho is absolutely the right man for the job. Fresh ideas, a proven track record and independent too - just like Brian Clough would have been in the England job - perfect - and like all England managers *should be*.
If we are ever going to have any success, we need a Mourinho/Clough type - I don't mind if they fail because they will play the right way and not tell the players to vanish into their own shells and "not play" - a guaranteed method of failure at the Euros and World Cups and a source of 40 years of English footballing frustration ever since the 1970 World Cup Quarter Final. England's problem is they lack bottle and only a man like Mourinho can reinstate that.
One other point - I can't believe we've got the naysayers already out with negative comments. These people obviously get a peverse enjoyment out of seeing England and England managers fail so they can moan. Nothing is ever right with them.
Big Paul, Grants Pass, Oregon, uSA
The Peacock will strut around in his new feathers until the shooting season in August next year and then he'll be off with the job on his CV before a shot is fired in anger. Cue Martin O'Neill Aston Villa gaining a foothold in European competition and a job well enough done to leave with honour.
The FA have to appoint Mourinho or take a big chance on non Anglophone Capello. The others are non starters.
So it is stop gap Mourinho for 9 months.
Joe Straight, Chelmsford,
At last, just reward for the coaches Steve Round and Bill Beswick who singularly failed to get England to play with any shape, possession or defensive cohesion for so many years.
Now, if the FA would only get rid of Ray Clemence our goalkeepers might have a chance.
By the way, it was originally claimed two years ago that Martin O'Neill failed his interview when he insisted on bringing in his own backroom staff to assist in the England coaching. The FA insisting on Steve Round and Bill Beswick being retained from the Sven regime led to the appointment of McClaren when the approach to Big Phil Scolari was bungled.
McClaren was also a failure from the Sven regime.
