All you need to know about Fabio Capello
Fabio Capello has been as confirmed as the new England manager. The Italian will begin work in the post on Monday, January 7 and has signed a four-and-a-half year contract that will take him up to Euro 2012.
Capello will also bring an all-Italian backroom staff with him - assistants Franco Baldini and Italo Galbiati, plus goalkeeping coach Franco Tancredi and fitness coach Massimo Neri. There is no English presence within the coaching set-up, although the FA said that Capello is happy for this to change, with Stuart Pearce, the England Under-21 coach, the candidate most likely to become involved.
Capello's standing in the game means that his services come at a price. His estimated £6.5million annual salary dwarfs the amount Sven-Goran Eriksson commanded, although if he delivers what the FA feel he is capable of, it will be money well spent.
Barwick said: "I am delighted that Fabio Capello has agreed to become England manager. When we set out to recruit the new manager, we said we were committed to appointing a world-class candidate. In Fabio Capello we have that man.
"Fabio is a winner. His record over the last two decades speaks for itself. At every club he has managed, Fabio has won the league title and Trevor and I were left in no doubt of his passion and commitment to bring that success to the England team."
Capello will hold a news conference in London on Monday at 1pm. His first match in charge of England will be the friendly international against Switzerland at Wembley on February 6.
The appointment was made after discussions with Brian Barwick, the FA chief executive, and Sir Trevor Brooking, the director of football development, at Wembley on Wednesday. The decision to offer the Italian the job was ratified unanimously by the FA board yesterday.
"Fabio Capello is widely recognised as one of the world's finest coaches," Brooking said. "He has achieved huge success wherever he has worked and has the respect of everyone in football.
"Fabio will have the full support of the FA and its coaching set-up. We are excited about working with him over the coming years as we focus on qualification for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa."
Adrian Bevington, the FA director of communications, insisted Capello is willing to appoint an Englishman within his backroom team.
"Fabio is very, very open and happy to include an English coach - or English coaches - within his staff," he said. "The key point is that is something we don't have to rush into.
"People should not get too hung up on the fact there is no English coach on the staff at the moment."
Capello has vast experience as a coach at the top level of the game. His 16-year managerial career has included spells at AC Milan, Real Madrid, AS Roma and Juventus. He has won nine league titles in Italy and Spain and lifted the European Cup with Milan in 1994.
Capello also enjoyed a successful playing career as a midfielder with Roma, Juventus and Milan and won 32 caps for Italy.

finally england gets a lesson in football, and the only man to do is capello..good luck
james, roma,
With Capello as England manager, English football fans should be laughing now. See what happened when the FA appointed the biggest joker in the world in Steve McClaren. I'm not a big fan of England football team but even I'm excited about the prospect of England now. I might just go and get myself an England jersey soon.

How can an Italian, however talented, but with limited knowledge of the English language motivate thick English professional footballers to perform more efficiently than they would on their todd!!
Why do football teams rely almost totally on coaches/manager (whatever). Whilst its the players themselves who eventually provide the results!

Cappelo taking the job means there are no excuses for the players. So we will find out just how bad we really are now!
Anthony, London,
I Hope that with Fabio Capello England will finaly be able to deliver the high standard results that we are yet to see. I am a big fan of Capello's work and have been able to see him bring every club silverwork, but don't get too excited about the game you'll be about to see. He isn't exactly known for the beautiful game, but if you have to choose between the game and silverwear ... I just hope he'll be able to deliver the same high performances as he has done on club-level, as coaching a national and a club team isn't exactly the same!
When he'll have finished the job in England, Capello, please and come to rescue the Nazionale!!!!
By the way, I really think he's among the best choices in the world for this job! Good luck for the years to come!!!

We've heard it all before . . . Ericsson was supposedly a winner . . . .look where he, and the FA got us!
Good luck Capello, you'll need it with that shower at the FA when they interfere.
I do hope you can survive drinking from this poisoned chalice and give we English something to cheer about.

We will finally see the English team repositioned toward the apex of the football world. As far as playing style goes, Italian teams are always tuff mentally and physically, that added to the English type of players should produce excellent football and spectacle.
