Drop Beckham . . .
No way should David Beckham be recalled to the squad [Oliver Kay, TheGame, December 31] , whether to get his 100th cap or for any other reason. He personifies everything that has been wrong with the England football team for the past ten years – egotism, underperformance, self-indulgence, obsession with money and image, lack of team spirit, failure (inability?) to accept the need to change and, last but not least, WAG culture.
We desperately need a complete break from the past and to move on, rebuild the entire squad and build for the future. Beckham is yesterday’s man – his wish to achieve his 100th cap is irrelevant to what English football needs. If Fabio Capello’s first decision is to recall Beckham, it will send all the wrong messages – he must signify a new direction and I am confident he will.

Beckham is a yesterday player and his future games are with a club at the bottom of a “minor league”. Capello must look to the future and cast his net beyond the Premier League, where most of the players are foreign. Capello must forget Beckham and not give in to the sentimental plea to give him his 100th cap. Let’s face it, his 99 games have produced little success.
Ronald Kentsley, Devon
I am 100 per cent in agreement with the last sentence in Oliver Kay’s article: “Beyond sentiment, and there is no sentiment in Premiership football these days, there is little cause to pick a player whose best days, no matter what he and his champions may say, are long behind him.”
Beckham’s only interest in playing for England again is nothing to do with national pride – it is to do with his pride and desire to become an even more wealthy icon.
Denis Ince, via e-mail
Let’s focus only on players who are likely to be actively involved in the 2010 World Cup finals. If we get there, Beckham will be 35 and still seeing out his contract with Los Angeles Galaxy. By all means draw on his experience and commitment to the English cause, but in an advisory, nonplaying capacity.
Nigel Springthorpe, Surrey
Keep him . . .
No way should Beckham be dropped. He should never have been dropped by Steve McClaren. He’s the only English player to pull on his shirt with pride at the moment. His best days are not over at 32 years old – he is still in his prime.
Diana Green, via e-mail
There are some boring, high-earning Premiership footballers who don’t even deserve one international cap. Beckham, however, is in a different class. He has always worn the England shirt with pride. He has passion and commitment and for that alone he should be rewarded with his 100th cap.
We need a boost after the Croatia fiasco and I would certainly like to be at Wembley to savour the atmosphere on what should be a memorable night. Who cares about 2010? Just give Beckham one final night of glory.
David Williams, Leigh-on-Sea, Essex
I do think that Beckham deserves and should be awarded his 100th cap in February. Even if it proves his last one, he has earned it and if Capello wants to get the fans on his side from the start, he will make Beckham the captain as well.
I will be there with my friends and we all hope that, together with all the true England fans, we are able to give him the standing ovation he so richly merits for his loyalty and great performances in the white shirt. Yes, I know things didn’t work out for him at the last two big tournaments, but who got us there anyway? Becks, a great servant to England. Always.

Personally i think all who say he shouldn't continue playing are idiotic and ridiculous, he is without a doubt the most influential man in english football in the past decade, he is patriotic and dedicated, i'm a Blackburn fan and have personally watched this man rip my team apart on many occasions, why should it stop now because he lives and plays in the states. Its the bitterness of the English that starts these articles and if he was Spanish or Italian he would be at the top of every january shopping list in the world. He deserves not only to get his 100th cap but to do it wearing the captains armband.
Matt, Blackburn, Lancashire
There are so many myths surrounding this man. one is that he is more passionate about and more commited to England than anyone else. this man turned up to an international tournament unfit and did more than anyone to foster the insidious WAG culture. he has been 5 tournaments and never been to the last 4, always fails to deliver when faced with top class opposition who know how to nullify him (this is also true in the later Champions lg stages) and his reputation is built on and perpetuated around one great display against a poor greek side.
remember he is part of a 3rd rate league and hasnt played for at least 2 months. capello needs to use the game next month to look at players who will be around for the long term. if beckham is picked for sentimental reasonas alone this will typify the type of thinking that has made us underachieve as a nation for so long. i have full faith that the great capello will not fall into the trap.
Paul Neilson, Singapore,
How can the press celebrate the probabilty that Capello will finally end the celebrity culture of the England team, and then have no comment to make about Beckham, not only coming back, but being given the captain's armband for his 100th cap? And what exactly did he do as captain to justify this honour? SCored that free kick against Greece. Yes, it was perfect timing to blaze his way into England folklore, but how did he lead us in the tournaments? Jumped out of a tackle in one quarterfinal against Brazil that led directly to a goal, and went to the last World Cup knowing full well he was patently physically unfit. A true captain would have held up his hands and retired from the squad in order for the manager to take a fully fir player in his stead.
He should be discarded and forgotten. Yes he loves to play for England, but so would I, so can I have a cap and be captain as well please?
Paul, Oklahoma, USA
David Beckham has built a highly successful career by taking what talent he has (and in my humble opinion one doesn't win the number of trophies that he has without possessing a fair amount of talent), and the working bloody hard to make the most of it, very much in the way that Kevin Keegan did.
Yes he is an eminently marketable product, and has become extremely wealthy. Yes he has become an instantly recognisable celebrity around the globe, and (apparently unforgivable to some) has married a pop-star wife. In spite of all this, however, football has remained the central focus of his life, he has continued to be an outstanding example of professionalism through unremitting hard work.
He wears his England shirt with pride, seems to have remained a thoroughly nice bloke and, in spite of the madhouse that his life must be, appears to still have his feet planted firmly on the ground.
If anyone deserved one more cap to reach a landmark figure of appearances it is he.
slim 75, Paris,
There is far more media chat about Beckham than he is worth. I'm amazed he's been given as many England caps as he has, but much of that could be put down to Sven's regular selection of a player whose last couple of dozen international games were as unimpressive as his first couple of dozen had been so good. Mr Capello should set about using his new broom as soon as he can.
Pete, NW London,
It's not the 100th cap that's undeserved, it's the 70th to 98th caps he shouldn't have got.
Adam, Eastcote, Middx, UK
Only in England can we have such a debate, about being old or past it. The last team that beat England at Wembley Croatia was playing with a 34yrs guy called Novak in their midfield. He played well and was not lightening fast and yet they beat England comprehensively with all their youth & speed. People in this country are obsessed with speed, hence kick and rush...Thats why England will never win a major trophy! We should cherish people with experience and guile not speed like headless chickens!
Players like Beckham should be held in very high esteem. He is talented player and a very good role model..despite his wealth, fame and everything, he still has great pride in representing Enlgand...Most people would not even bother!
collins, London, England
why are we even discussing this total waste of space someone please name 10 games in his 99 when he was the out standing player on the pitch difficult is it not plus he is the greatest coward to play for england ( his non tackle against brazil comes to mind) so ditch him .
seamus, dublin, ireland
i think having an american post how "becks" is simply the "best" just about sums up why some of us finally want to see the back of this pointlessly overhyped image over content celebrity figure who always underdelivered true to his vastly limited ability and whos time is unquestionably done. We`re not america, were not some 3rd world or far eastern country with no depth or history in this sport, why do we continue this cringeworthy obsession over such a non-consequential figure?why dont we just grow up and long last and put this childish delusion over beckham and his circus to bed once and for all and get back to trying to build a progressive, youthful and forward-thinking side that can take us to real success in 2010?
rob, london, uk
Becks was so dedicated and determined that both of his ex-managers recalled him, and he did not let them down.
Look at how he is training now, on his own initiative.
He is very recognisable and he is still tops in my book.
Way to go, David. Here's toasting your 100th cap
Jeanette, Brisbane, Australia
Becks the best ! He's got the right stuff....let him play as long as he can. He has done a great job for football (soccer) in the U>S>A> My sons' and grandsons think he is a Star...He is. Good Luck in 2008, Beck...... : )
