Sven-Göran Eriksson last night led the calls for David Beckham to be given his 100th England cap. At a tribute dinner to recognise the midfield player’s contribution to the game, the former England head coach called on Fabio Capello, the new national manager, to grant Beckham his century in next month’s friendly against Switzerland at Wembley.
Beckham has made 99 appearances for England, but Eriksson, the Manchester City manager, said that he would phone Capello personally if the former Manchester United and Real Madrid player was not included in the Italian’s first squad and, in front of Brian Barwick, the FA chief executive, insisted that hundreds of guests toast Beckham and his hundredth cap. “He deserves it,” Eriksson said.
The Swede’s support for Beckham would appear to heap more expectation on Capello, who began work this weekend by attending two FA Cup matches, to include the player in his first starting XI. For his part, Beckham is doing his best to claim a place by training with Arsenal during the Major League Soccer close season.
His move to the LA Galaxy in the United States raises significant questions about his long-term ability to play for his country and although Capello is expected to include Beckham next month and make him only the fifth Englishman to reach 100 caps, it remains to be seen whether there is a place for the midfield player in the 2010 World Cup qualification campaign, which begins in September.
Pushed on the issue at his unveiling before Christmas, Capello paid tribute to Beckham’s ability to “get what he wants”, but the Italian had previously proved his ruthless streak by banishing Beckham from the first-team squad at Real Madrid, albeit on the orders of the club.
At the Football Writers’ Association dinner in London last night, Beckham reiterated that he would not be retiring from the national team although he was not making any assumptions about the future. “I have played 99 times so far,” he said. “We’ll see. What I always want to be remembered for is that I have given my best in every game whether that’s for Manchester United, Preston North End, Real Madrid, LA Galaxy or England. Playing for my country has been the biggest honour of my career.”

Wouldn't it be something if there were more than two or three players in the England squad who showed the same enthusiasm and commitment when playing for their country as David Beckham............? Considering that were it not for Beckham's assists and goals in the last few years there would be even less to cheer about than there has been.
A 100th Cap is the least he deserves.
Luke O, Berridale, Australia
Beckham is still world class and the best right sided player England have got.
Play the best players until they are no longer the best then bring in the next player.
English press seem to have a history of trying to retire players in all forms of sport before they really need to stop playing.
Mick, Gold Coast, Australia
Beckham may not be a man of the future in English football but he should definitely be given a chance to make his 100th appearance for his country. A friendly against Switzerland is a perfect opportunity.
P-O Edberg, Gothenburg, Sweden
You, f in Brisbane, have summed up football perfectly. Why not show a little sentiment to one of Englands finest players? England are not going to Euro 2008. It matters not who plays in Englands next match as it'll only be a show pony to unveil Capello anyway.
You must be a Beckham hater? Give the guy a break.
Jonny, London, UK
This is a nice gesture for one of the greats of the game - especially for a friendly.
When Beckham came to Sydney with some other guys who played for Galaxy 80,000 people turned up in a town that still calls the game soccer. "Football" means one of rugby. league or aussie rules depending on basically where you live.
In a celebrity culture surely Beckham and his missus Bec has done more for England in an economic sense than anyone else other than the Beatles.

Oh dear me again. Beckham has won nothing for England, has been desperately unfit, ( The last 2 Euro Campaigns) missed a vital penalty, jumped that tackle that led to the goal that put us out of the world cup against Brazil, went to America soley for money and vanity; why oh why is such a shallow person given so much coverage? He doesn't deserve 20 caps let alone 100. Take a look at the England Rugby team and learn about supreme fitness, brilliant captaincy and total commitment to teamwork. As for Sven, he's doing well at City, but what did he win for England? Time to move on.
Richard Paines, Ilfracombe, Devon
We'd (those that support the England team) all be looking forward to Euro 2008 a lot more if Beckham had been in the team from the start of the qualifying campaign, as we would be there and Russia would not.
Alex, London, UK
this unedifying orchestration of pressure on capello to award the 100th.cap shows how far celebrity and the media have advanced their claims on the modern game.i hope capello doesn't take the easy option but makes a stand.however, i fear he may see himself in canute's position facing a sea of money.
brian cole, london, england
Select him immediately. What else is the football circus about? Everyone loved Beckham in Madrid and the fans miss him like hell...he inspires too much jealousy for his own good and it would look so mean and small if Capello does not manage to include probably the most popular footballer in the world in the English team...what else can England boast about? He is a gentleman and a terrific sportsman and I don't know the first thing about football but I do know that if he is playing, the audience will be much greater. His impact on the game is amazing and anyone who denies it is plain jealous!
maddison, pontevedra, spain
It's a nonsense even thinking about including Beckham again. He has semi-retired and is much more interested in his celebrity status than anything else. Go back to Hollywood, David.
David, Poole,
Fair enough. Ultimately, whether Beckham is selected should be relative to the "market".
No doubt that there are a lot of things "commercial" about him and the Mrs. He should neither be penalised nor promoted by such hubris.
hsayuti, Singapore, Singapore
I have never been beckhams biggest fan but his commitment and dedication to the England cause has never been in question. I think he deserves it, thanks for the memories David
db, Bradford,
Forget the sickening sentiment over this man. Select him if he is the best for the position, otherwise forget him! He's had far too much publicity and over-the-top accolades to last a normal person 3 lifetimes!
Ron Johnson, Oxford, UK
Who Cares!!!
Whether he gets one more cap or not ..what difference does it make to anything?

I have watched Beckham play in LA and in Vancouver BC and I now believe that his future is in modelling Jockey shorts or some other publicity nonsense. His footballing skills are now your memories.
H.Greenwood, Vancouver,BC, Canada
Sven should keep quiet and let his successor get on with it. Comments from predecessors are seldom helpful in any walk of life., especially when they come from someone who, in this case, along with Beckham, won England nothing during his tenure.
john, Oxford, England
How this supremely average player has amassed 100 caps beats me.
Stuart, Manchester, England
Beckham at Galaxy is unlikely to feature significantly in England's future. Capello should, and hopefully will, select the players most likely to figure in a successful future.
