David Beckham went for a run along the beach in Brazil yesterday — Goldenballs on golden sands — adamant that he is fit to win his 100th cap. There have been suggestions that Fabio Capello is worried about Beckham’s sharpness, but the former captain revealed that he had been sending bulletins to the England manager in his bid to reach his century.
Beckham has been training with Arsenal and it is understood that updates have been sent to Massimo Neri, the England fitness coach. Beckham also claimed that Arsène Wenger, the Arsenal manager, had complimented him on his fitness.
“I feel great,” Beckham told The Times. “Arsène Wenger came up to me and said, ‘Fitness-wise you are looking good and looking sharp.’ Arsenal are one of the fittest teams in the Premiership. The England manager has been kept in the loop of what I have been doing. That is what he wanted.”
Beckham was speaking on a 24-hour trip to Natal, on the spectacular northeast tip of Brazil, where he was marking the site of his third academy after London and Los Angeles. Last week he made a trip to Sierra Leone on behalf of Unicef. It is not known what Capello thinks of his globe-trotting, but Beckham, who has not played a competitive game since November, acknowledged that the Italian will make no special allowances for him before next week’s friendly against Switzerland.

“You are wasting your time trying to read his mind,” Beckham said. “He doesn’t treat any player any different in the team or in the squad. That is a good thing. In the past, everyone has known the squad and everyone has been very relaxed about it. It is good to have that anxiety, wanting to know whether you are in.”
As the debate continues as to whether he will reach the landmark, Beckham said that he can do nothing more than wait by the phone. He may have played under Capello for Real Madrid and the pair may have celebrated a championship together, but Beckham said that he will receive no favours from a manager who can make Sir Alex Ferguson, under whom he played for Manchester United, seem like a softie.
There was a feeling in the Beckham camp that Steve McClaren had banished him purely to distance himself from Sven-Göran Eriksson’s regime. If Beckham is dropped this time, he will take it on the chin. “Capello only makes decisions on football,” he said. “He doesn’t care about anything else. If he doesn’t think you’re fit he won’t play you, if he doesn’t think you’re good enough he won’t pick you. That’s the way he is — he is a fair man. He does things to do the best for the team and that’s what he’ll do with England.”
Beckham flew back to England last night for Capello’s announcement of a provisional squad of about 28, expected tomorrow. “The players are going to enjoy it immensely, but it is going to be tough because he works you hard,” Beckham said. “And he won’t take any playing around or messing around.
“I’ve seen that at Real Madrid, where we were a long way behind Barcelona and ended up winning the league. His approach is ‘it’s my way’ and that’s the way it has got to be.”
It is a regime that Beckham is eager to sign up to, even briefly. “It would mean the world,” he said. “Getting picked for your country is always special. The 100th game makes it extra special. Hopefully it will happen. Hopefully I’ve worked hard enough to get myself fit, but we’ll have to see.”

I have heard it all, Beckham opening a football academy in Brazil of all places! Haven't Brazil won the World Cup 5 times? As far as we know, the last and only time England won was in 1966 at home when Beckham was not even born. I am sure that any funds Beckham have to contribute would be acceptedgracefully, but for the love of football generally, I can only hope that the Beckham academy would be avoided by any player seeking to make the Brazil national team, since it is clear to all concerned that Beckham's contribution to the England national team fell far short of what was required to make England competitive on an international scale. It is a bit sad that while England continue to flounder internationally, not even being capable of getting past teams like Croatia, Beckham seems to be getting confused with celebrity status and footballing prowess, the latter of which is held in abundance in Brazil.
I am sorry if I offended anyone, but the irony was too overwheming to ignore.

Its amazing how everyone know better than the England manager especially where David Beckham is concerned!
Chris Nicholls, Edinburgh, Scotland
I say give him the first half, let him lead them out with the skipper's armband on. Then sub him at half time, and get looking at the future of England's right flank, whoever that may be.
He has earned the right to at least that. Of all the things you can say about Beckham, he has always wanted to play for his country, and always tried his best, even if it wasn't enough on the day.
DJ, Norwich,
So now jet-lag to and from LA is not an issue he's off to Sierre Leone and Brazil. Presumably Arsene Wenger and other authoritive voices will turn the sport science manual on it's head and insist that there is no difference between training and match fitness. I haven't turned out for DS Westminster for 32 seasons but I've kept myself fit, can I expect a call from Fabio?

Is the game of of football at international level meant to represent the people of England at there best or is it is cosy club for the clique who's faces fit? If the former then Beckham who has not played competitive footbal for months and even then played below par should not be selected. If it is the latter, then OK, he ought to play along with anyone else who has been involved with England. The ex-FA secretary is a good candidate a she seemed to be a close terms with many people in the football world.
But seriously Beckham lost England two crucial matches in two crucial competitions though his petulant 'I am A Prima Donna' attititude. We owe him nothing. He should not play.

swp runs past one runs past two then either trips or play a shoddy ridiculous ball into the box ,
Beckham gets the ball looks up great pass goal. simple.
if Beckham isnt fit and lennon or phillips or bentley take his place thats fair enough but as a manger surely u would pick Becks , if ur losing with 30 minutes to go you know u can bring him on and he will run his heart out for those minutes, u cant say hes not fit for half an hours play and tell him to put balls in the box , with his delivery ur gonna get a goal easily, it happened against coratia, y dont we do it more often, bring him on late and he will get the job done.
Simon Slade, Dorchester, Dorset
I would bring on Mr Beckham for the last 5 minutes, and then say - thank you and goodbye.
He has been a great servant for England but passed his sell-by date a few years ago.
Bryan Ingleby, Deal,
Who cares?
Gustavo, London, UK
Play Beckham until half time and then bring on SWP upfront alongside one of the forawards, then take off Beckham and play Bentley, keep Beckham in the squad until the others learn off him.
Indy, Hornchurch, UK
beckhams time passed a long time ago let hin slip into the football mire that is america never to be mentioned again

Beckham has been a good servant to his country but how can we take football and the FA seriously if he is selected against Switzerland, he is not playing competetive football at any level. Please Capello do not pick him and show us that the England team have been picked on merit, anything else is
embarrasing to the English game.
Money must not interfere with team selection. Capello must show he is boss or it will end for him as it did for Mclaren.
Anthony, b,
I hope DB is given the chance to complete "his ton" for our beloved game of football.
Mike, Ilkley, England
And yet without question Becks is still the best right sided midfielder on which England have to call. Even half fit players like Lennon, SWP and Bents are not really fit to clean GB's boots. So stick with what we know will work until the rest are good enough or Beck's is too old to continue. form is temporary, class is permanent and whatever you have to say about Beckham - it cannot be disputed he is class!!!!
Peter Adams, Haarlem, Netherlands
I think Capello should wait until Kazakhstan away before recalling Beckham, then we will see how committed he is to getting 100 caps!!
It does seem ridiculous that we are even having a debate about recalling someone who has not played any football in months, especially when we have Lennon, Wright-Phillips and Bentley all in the form of their lives!!
