David Beckham, apparently, is “encouraged” by the conversation he had with Fabio Capello last night, when the Italian told him he would not be selecting him in his first England squad to face Switzerland at Wembley next Wednesday. He is encouraged, presumably, because he was told that the door is still open – get yourself fit, he was assured, and that magical 100th cap will be yours.
As Capello named his first England squad this afternoon, though, it was increasingly difficult to see a way back for Beckham – unless a recall comes in the form of a charitable inclusion to give him his century in one of the coming friendly matches before ushering him into retirement. That, it now seems, is the best that the former captain can hope for as he strives to build up his fitness before the start of the new MLS campaign in late March.
After a whistle-stop tour of the Premier League over the past three-and-a-half weeks, Capello has come up with some intriguing names and, if the uncapped Aston Villa duo of Curtis Davies and Gabriel Agbonlahor were the names that leapt out, the inclusion of Shaun Wright-Phillips and David Bentley ahead of Beckham to battle for the place on the right-hand side of midfield is also noteworthy. Lacking fitness or not, Beckham might yet won a call-up had Capello not been happy with the alternatives he has found in that position – not forgetting Aaron Lennon, who on this occasion will play in Stuart Pearce’s Under-21 squad.
It is a squad that is full of talking points – no Paul Robinson, no Phil Neville, no Dave Kitson, as had been mooted, and, contrary to rumours this morning, a place for an out-of-form Michael Owen – but it is one with which few can take issue. At risk of upsetting the many Beckham disciples all over the world, Capello has made absolutely the right decision with regard to the former captain. Beckham has not played a competitive match since England’s calamitous final Euro 2008 qualifying match against Croatia in November and, while he may have made great play of his training sessions with Arsenal prior to his very public trips to Sierra Leone and Brazil in the past week or so, the 32-year-old LA Galaxy midfield player cannot claim he is sufficiently match-fit to win a 100th cap on merit, as opposed to sentiment, at present.
As for the rest of the squad, it will be interesting to see which of the three goalkeepers – David James, Scott Carson and Chris Kirkland – have impressed Capello most and whether players such as Glen Johnson, Matthew Upson, Davies and Agbonlahor survive the cut when the squad is trimmed to around 23 names before they meet in Hertfordshire on Sunday. Agbonlahor and Luke Young, his Aston Villa team-mate, would be exciting selections against Switzerland as Capello looks to kick off a new era, one in which the former captain is in danger of being left behind.

England needs a strong coach to take the team in to a winning worthy world cup victory, if it means leaving Beckham out so be it i have to admire him for being an absolute professional in the way he his giving all players a chance on there match fitness, there is a lot of new young talent who have not been able to break through the ranks to show there skills. Capello is the man to make sure they get that chance that can only be a good thing for England, fans have waited a long time for a return to the glory days with Capello the boss i really feel that he can take the team all the way to world cup glory.Mary ,Cheshire

David Johnston - if people want to stay away from watching England because Becks is not playing then they are hardly geniune supporters. If you want to just see Becks play - watch him on sky for LA Galaxy . As for me I want to see how he fits our finest talents - like Rooney, Gerrard, J Cole & Fedinand - into a cohesive unit.
Now we all know Capello is the real deal. Squad morale will improve as players know only those who are in form and playing regularly are going to be selected. Robinson & Defoe have paid the price for being on the bench so how could Capello justify picking a player who last played a full game months ago? Beckham can start the season with LA Galarxy knowing if he performs well then he will be picked and I do not see why anyone can really argue with that policy. It is surely common sense.
Whitey, UK,
Beck has served England with distinction, and promoted the game worldwide as an ambassador of English caliber football. Moving to LA may have been some sort of modified semi-retirement for the softening captain, but he has still contributed well in recent matches, if not like a legend. Look at the freakin on Capellos roster---he bumps Lennon down? Nice luxery---and ask yourself if Mr Beckham doesn't deserve his 100th, and a chance to finally sit down on that rocker with his posh thing, and watch the new guard take over. What does Beck say about this? I say it's just Capello asserting his rightful control over his new squad; but he has to include Beck at some point, legacy and pride, for the sport, demands it. I hope your old captain gets the hint and runs some laps.

Don't you mean Ashley Young?
Chris, London,
I'm having a hard time believing this: Did someone say Beckham (absolutely no success internationally) is opening up a football academy in Brazil (huge international success)? You've got be kidding! Perhaps Beckham is hoping to learn from the Brazilians. Would someone please convince Mr. Beckham that being successful at hype and actually achieving football credentials are not the same thing. He should send his hype-gotten riches to Zidane's academy. Please retire from all football (including LA where I live) so others who quietly play football without any hype can show us what real success is.

Beckham has been doing his usual and prancing around all over the world getting his face in the news for the last few weeks. Capello has not picked him because he is A, Not match fit and B, well past his sell by date. He should not have been picked for england for the last 5 years as far as i'm concerned and only got near to 100 caps because of Erikssons fawning indulgence. The sooner England can get past the hype and disappointment ravaged Beckham era, the sooner we can look forward to having a chance of winning a cup.
nick, scarborough,
David from Melbourne - I could not disagree more with your comments. Capello is looking to build a team that can go forward and qualify for the World Cup in 2010, he is not looking to curry favour with the Beckham-ites who believe that Beckham should be in the squad out of sentiment/because he is David Beckham. If Beckham gets back playing regularly and is fit and in form, I would welcome him back to the squad. Unfortunately for him, there are alternatives in his position who are playing regularly and are in good form who deserve to be in the squad.
If people do stay away from Wembley purely because he isn't in the squad, I for one would be glad because it would mean that Wembley would hopefully have fans in it who aren't blinkered by the hype.

Some key hints in this selection from Capello.
1.He will pick the players and not be pressured by the media circus any single player wishes to whip up to pressure him(beckham).
2.Capello is aiming for a young and pacy England team-so no room for creaking carthorses like Sol.
3.Capello has his eye firmly on the 2010 World Cup ,so anyone of advancing years is not going to get a game as they will not be selected in 2 years time anyway(neville, etc)
4.Capello will play fast attacking football-look how many offensive minded players he picked.
5.Capello clearly sees the under-21's as a "feeder" team for the final selection, hence the importance he places on Pearce and the role Capello played in the selection of the under-21 team.
6.Watch out for some of the under-21's to move up as players like Owen will fall by the wayside through the inevitable injuries yet again.
The first selections he has made have been very good and show Capello is aiming for the semifinals of the World cup 2010.

Totally disagree with this Oliver key. You are right for one thing : Capello's decision has upset milion people all over the world. He has not even start a game yet, but already made so many people dislike or hate him. As some viewers pointed out, this capello just wants a full attention on himself for his first game by exculding Beckhams massive attraction. We also see many people will turn away from the match if there is no Beckham playing. What a shame.
