Fifa to investigate Giovanni Trapattoni Ireland contract

Fifa, football’s world governing body, is to investigate the deal that led to Giovanni Trapattoni, the former Italy coach, becoming the new manager of Ireland last week. Denis O’Brien, an Irish billionaire, has agreed to pay half of the Italian’s salary of about €1 million (£750,000) net per year.

While payment from an individual is not unheard of - Roman Abramovich, the Chelsea owner, helps to fund the wages of Guus Hiddink, the Russia coach – Fifa is keen to clarify the arrangement and will contact the Football Association of Ireland.

“At present, there appears to be no regulation to prevent the deal,” a Fifa spokesman said. “But we will be seeking further official details from the national organisation and we are investigating the matter.”

Trapattoni, 68, is still in charge of Red Bull Salzburg, whom he will leave on May 1 after the end of the Austrian league season. His first match in charge of Ireland will be the friendly against Serbia in Dublin on May 24.
