Berti Vogts has stepped down as coach of Nigeria, citing irreconcilable differences. The 61-year-old German has terminated his contract with the Nigerian Football Association, which was due to expire after the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, after little more than a year in charge of the African giants.

In a statement Vogts, who only became Nigeria coach in January last year, said: "The actions and the conduct of the Nigerian Football Association during and after the African Nations Cup have removed all trust and made a further partnership impossible."

The former Scotland coach had come under increasing pressure following Nigeria's poor showing at the Nations Cup. The Super Eagles won just once in four games at the 2008 tournament before crashing out at the quarter-final stage to host nation Ghana.

Vogts added that "the work with the team and the players had been very enjoyable and he especially regretted that he could not continue this partnership and the building of a new strong Nigerian national team."
