It was not what Arsène Wenger envisaged - losing Mathieu Flamini, the France midfield player, before the last ball of this season had been kicked - but the Arsenal manager promised yesterday that he will not contemplate the loss of any of his other crown jewels. There will, he said, be no mass exodus from the Emirates Stadium.
Wenger has bitten the bullet over Flamini, who has signed a four-year deal with AC Milan. His contract was due to expire and, despite having considered the offer of a pay rise to about £40,000 a week at the North London club, he chose to exercise his rights under the Bosman ruling. Flamini left for Italy on a free transfer.
However, with Inter Milan courting Alexander Hleb, the Belarus midfield player, and Real Madrid chasing Cesc Fàbregas, the Spain midfield player, Wenger has issued a rallying call to his troops. “I hope that 95 per cent of the team, the core, says, ‘Come on. We have only just lost,'” he said.
Wenger was referring to narrow defeats by Manchester United and Chelsea in the Barclays Premier League that effectively cost Arsenal a tilt at the title. He also included the 5-3 aggregate defeat by Liverpool in the quarter-finals of the Champions League. “It is only just' because we were leading at United, we were leading at Chelsea and we were leading at Liverpool,” Wenger said. “Every time, we lost a little bit of focus and lost the game. Let's come back and show that we are winners. That is the real target of the team.”
Wenger's plea became impassioned. “We were close this year, but we did not win,” he said. “What I expect from my team is that, if you are a winner, you say, ‘Let's come back next year and win.' If our players are not capable of doing that and just want to walk out for the bigger contracts, that would be the biggest disappointment for me.”
Real's admiration of Fàbregas has been confirmed by Ramón Calderón, the club's president. “If we receive any indication from the player that he wants to leave Arsenal, then we will negotiate without limits,” Calderón said.
While it would appear to be an attempt to “tap up” Fàbregas, 21, it is unlikely that Arsenal will take the matter farther. Calderón's comments are deemed “not helpful”, but Fàbregas signed a new contract in October 2006 that will keep him at the club until 2014. Wenger is confident that the Spaniard's head will not be turned by promises of riches elsewhere.
In the case of Hleb, 27, Wenger is more concerned. The Belarussian has almost served the third year of his five-year deal and, under a little-known and little-used Fifa ruling, he could buy out the remainder of his contract. “What people say about the buy-out clause is not as simple as it [appears],” Wenger said.
Arsenal are considering making a formal complaint to Fifa, the sport's world governing body, over Inter's overt interest in Hleb. “We want to keep him, we want him to be part of our team next season,” Wenger said. “We have lost one player [Flamini] and we do not want to lose more.”
In the past, Arsenal have been able to pay better wages to players by taking advantage of tax loopholes. However, since Revenue & Customs tightened up its procedures, paying part of a player's wages into overseas accounts, thereby reducing the tax liabilities, has been outlawed.
The club do not have the highest pay structure, either. “The salaries on offer, it is a problem,” Wenger said. “But we did not master this situation with Flamini because when a player is out of contract, he can sign where he wants. Legally he can do it.”
Play as you earn
Barclays Premier League clubs aim to spend less than half their turnover on the wages of their players and staff. This is part of the reason why Arsenal were unwilling to break their wage structure and pay more than £40,000 a week to keep Mathieu Flamini at the club.

To Mr C Elder:
Did Arsene Wenger not develop Ashley Cole?
Just because they no longer play for the team, it does not mean that they were not developed by Arsenal.
Ben, London,
Those figures do not make sense. I suspect the real figures would show Arsene is the only manager of a top 4 club that has done a good job of controlling the wage bill (and the signing fees). I imagine that Manchester, Liverpool and Chelsea all spend much more money per point earned in a season.
John D, London, UK,
Wenger's got a nerve. He steals 16 year olds for nothing from the clubs that reared them from children, then pretends they are his creation and emotionally blackmails them when they want to achieve their market worth - like high priced indentured serfdom. It seems very dishonest and pure spin
Davie P, London,
Alex C,
Bit odd including John Terry in your list - he holds Chelsea to ransom by refusing to sign contracts and hinting at moves on an almost annual basis.
Alex, London,
Couldn't have put it better.
"why has Wenger not been able to develop a single English player in his 12 years as manager? His track record in this regard is a disgrace."
Pete, Marlow,
I admire Wenger for his stance but fear for Arsenal if they continue in this vein. In the early 90's Liverpool missed the boat by failing to realise that the world had changed. Like in every walk of life the best people command the highest salaries. Why should footballers be any different?
Mark K, London,
William, the figures quoted for Arsenal's wages are incorrect. William Gallas is on nearer to 80k, Cesc around 75k and Adebayor will be nearer to 45k. And the offer to Flamini was 55k. The cynical amongst us might suggest this is 1 more media attempt to doubt on the financial wellbeing of Arsenal
David , Sheffield,
Yes Alex, lets have more upstanding citizens like Jermaine Pennant and Ashley Cole.
ali, Liverpool,
Can someone explain how Arsenal's wage bill is more than £20 million higher than Liverpool's, when their average earners are on £25,000 a week less and their highest earner is on £40,000 a week less? Or, for that matter, how Arsenal's wage bill is almost exactly the same as Man Utd's? Doesn't add up.
Jules, London,
Instead of whining over his departing foreign mercenaries, why has Wenger not been able to develop a single English player in his 12 years as manager ?His track record in this regard is a disgrace, and he should be fired for this.Where are the English successors to Seaman/Keown/Adams/Dixon?Wright etc?
C.Elder, Boston, USA
The problem with having no English Players at Arsenal is that there is no sense of loyalty to the club. There is noone like Scholes, Neville, Gerrard, Carragher or Terry at Arsenal, people who are the embodiment of their club. Arsenal is full of journeymen.
Alex C, London,
Arsene has build several great Arsenal teams without spending much money. Yes it's annoying to lose Flamini and even more so to lose Hleb, but it will be the chance for other youngsters like Denilson, Diaby, Walcott and Fran Merida to have their chance to shine. In Arsene we trust
charlie, london,
To Chris, London
Other than the Armed Forces how many employers can force employees to stay in a job that they don't want to. A month or two notice is the normal practice when leaving an employer, so it is more surprising that footballers are ever required even to sign these contracts.
MB, Aberdeen,
can someone explain why Arsenal's wage bill is approximately the same as United's? United have Ferdinand, Ronaldo, Rooney all on c. 100k, and arsenal have this apparent "stringent wage structure" where the highest earners (Fabregas, Gallas) are on c. 80k. Kempson, analysis please.
William, London,
What is the point in signing a deal that will tie a player to a club if they can quit each summer? Doesnt sound like a very good deal except to the player!
Chris, London,
